Pyrrhosoma nymphula est une des 2 esp\u00e8ces qui a d\u00e9clench\u00e9 mon int\u00e9r\u00eat pour les odonates, car elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 la premi\u00e8re \u00e0 coloniser en nombre la petite mare que j’avais creus\u00e9e dans mon jardin du Maine-et-Loire. Elle est tr\u00e8s commune en France, une des premi\u00e8res \u00e0 appara\u00eetre, en mars dans le sud de la France, un peu apr\u00e8s la mi-avril, dans mon bassin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Description et identification<\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Le m\u00e2le mesure environ 35 mm, et son identification n’est pas difficile ; les yeux sont rouges, il n’y a pas de tache postoculaire, le thorax est noir \u00e0 reflets bronze ou dor\u00e9, avec une bande ant\u00e9hum\u00e9rale rouge pour les m\u00e2les matures, jaune pour les immatures, l’abdomen est rouge. Les pattes sont noires, ce qui permet de le s\u00e9parer facilement les deux sexes de l’esp\u00e8ce la plus ressemblante, Ceriagrion tenellum<\/a>. Les pt\u00e9rostigmas sont tr\u00e8s sombres.
Les femelles ont le m\u00eame aspect, mais leurs bandes ant\u00e9hum\u00e9rales sont jaunes (devenant rouges quand elles sont \u00e2g\u00e9es) et leur abdomen varie consid\u00e9rablement, soit totalement rouge ou presque totalement noir, avec tous les interm\u00e9diaires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Habitat<\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

La petite mare de mon jardin ne conna\u00eet que 4 ou 5 heures de soleil par jour et Pyrrhosoma nymphula y est tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9sent ; il habite les foss\u00e9s, mares et \u00e9tangs, les zones humides de tout genre, m\u00eame les eaux courantes des petites rivi\u00e8res, du moment que les rives sont bien v\u00e9g\u00e9talis\u00e9es et qu’il y a des plantes flottantes pour y pondre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Distribution g\u00e9ographique<\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

On le rencontre dans l’ouest de l’Europe, au sud jusqu’au Maroc. Plus au nord, on le trouve en Irlande et en Angleterre jusqu’en Su\u00e8de et Finlande. \u00c0 l’est, il atteint l’Oural, plus au sud l’Iran, la Turquie et la Gr\u00e8ce. Il est \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s partout en France, jusqu’\u00e0 2000 m d’altitude dans les Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

P\u00e9riode de vol<\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Quand elle appara\u00eet, le printemps odonatologique est de retour, car c’est une des toutes premi\u00e8res \u00e0 se montrer, mi-mars dans le sud, mi-avril dans ma r\u00e9gion. On trouve encore des sujets en juillet, voire en ao\u00fbt, mais le pic de pr\u00e9sence est en mai et juin, o\u00f9 ils peuvent \u00eatre nombreux \u00e0 animer les pi\u00e8ces d’eaux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Pyrrhosoma, du grec pyrrhos<\/em>, couleur de la flamme<\/em>\u00a0et soma<\/em>, signifiant corps<\/em>, ce que le nom commun fran\u00e7ais a bien repris en lui attribuant \u00ab\u00a0un corps de feu\u00a0\u00bb.
Nymphula, du latin nymphula<\/em>, pour petite nymphe <\/em>ou mari\u00e9e<\/em>, et son nom fran\u00e7ais \u00e0 repris cette traduction pour en faire finalement notre c\u00e9l\u00e8bre Nymphe \u00e0 corps de feu<\/em>.
Les anglo-saxons l’appellent Large Red Damselfly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
