Description – Identification<\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Epitheca bimaculata est un grand odonate de 55 \u00e0 65 mm, un Corduliidae qui ressemble aux Libellulidae, d’ailleurs d\u00e9crit en 1825 par Toussaint de Charpentier sous le nom de Libellula bimaculata.
Mais contrairement aux Libellulidae sa coloration \u00e9volue tr\u00e8s peu depuis son \u00e9mergence jusqu’\u00e0 sa maturit\u00e9, seuls ses yeux deviendront parfois verts comme ceux des Corduliidae.
On ne peut le confondre qu’avec un jeune m\u00e2le (ou femelle) Libellula fulva<\/a> dont il partage les taches basales alaires (plus compactes pour L. fulva) et la ligne noire abdominale dorsale, qui est forte et se prolonge jusqu’au S3 pour Epitheca bimaculata.

Habitat – Distribution<\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Son habitat de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence est constitu\u00e9 de grands \u00e9tangs aux berges v\u00e9g\u00e9talis\u00e9es, la pr\u00e9sence d’arbres ou de for\u00eat \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 semblant indispensable. La photo ci-dessus a \u00e9t\u00e9 faite le 8 mai 2021 dans les phragmites qui occupent l’extr\u00e9mit\u00e9 de cet \u00e9tang de Fougemagne.
Sa distribution s’\u00e9tend de l’est de la France au Japon et \u00e0 la Sib\u00e9rie, avec de nombreuses lacunes, peut-\u00eatre par manque de prospecteurs, car l’esp\u00e8ce est difficile \u00e0 contacter \u00e0 l’\u00e9tat d’imago adulte par son comportement qui l’incite \u00e0 rester \u00e0 distance des berges.

Elle est pr\u00e9sente au centre de la France et atteint l’Eure et Loire et la Haute-Vienne \u00e0 l’ouest, mais s’\u00e9tend surtout vers l’est et le nord-est avec de belles populations en Lorraine et en Champagne-Ardenne.
Sylvain Bost me signale le 29 avril 2025 que \u00ab\u00a0l’esp\u00e8ce est commune en Indre-et-Loire, juste de l’autre c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la fronti\u00e8re [du Maine-et-Loire], d\u00e9couverte en Deux-S\u00e8vres l’an dernier, en Sarthe sur 3 communes depuis 2023<\/em> \u00ab\u00a0.

Toussaint von Charpentier a d\u00e9crit l’esp\u00e8ce sous le nom de Libellula bimaculata<\/em>.

Epitheca<\/strong> (Burmeister, 1839), du grec \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b8\u03ae\u03ba\u03b7 pour couverture ou couvercle, se r\u00e9f\u00e9rant \u00e0 la spectaculaire lame vulvaire des femelles (\u201cNomen ex vocabulis Graecis \u1f10\u03c0\u03af et \u03b8\u03ae\u03ba\u03b7 compositum, propter longissimas foeminae appendices ad valvam oviparam).

Bimaculata<\/strong>, bi<\/em> est en latin, est un pr\u00e9fixe signifiant \u00ab\u00a0deux<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0. Maculata est compos\u00e9 du latin maculo, souiller, tacher et du suffixe \u00ab\u00a0atum<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb signifiant \u00ab\u00a0porteur de ou dot\u00e9 de<\/em>…\u00a0\u00bb. Ces 2 taches sont, bien s\u00fbr, une r\u00e9f\u00e9rence aux taches basales des ailes post\u00e9rieures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
