Austrocnemis maccullochi est connu sous son nom Anglais de Tiny longlegs, et effectivement il est tout petit, 18.5 mm et a de tr\u00e8s longues pattes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tillyard l’a d\u00e9crit en 1926 dans \u00ab\u00a0On a collection of Papuan dragonflies (Odonata) made by the late Mr. Allan R. McCulloch in 1922\u20133, with descriptions of new species\u00a0\u00bb et il est \u00e9tonnant qu’il l’ait appel\u00e9 Agriocnemis<\/strong> maccullochi car seule sa taille pourrait rappeller les Agriocnemis. L’absence de taille postoculaire, le pronotum globuleux, l’aspect vert bronze et surtout les pattes allong\u00e9es l’en \u00e9cartent nettement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

M\u00e2les et femelles aiment se poser (et m\u00eame \u00e9merger) sur les feuilles flottantes, en particulier les petits n\u00e9nuphars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Une tr\u00e8s jeune femelle, puis une autre, une plus \u00e2g\u00e9e ; cette derni\u00e8re est peut-\u00eatre en t\u00eate-\u00e0-t\u00eate avec son exuvie, ou n’est-ce que le hasard de son vol qui l’a mise ainsi en contact avec son exuvie (\u00e0 longue patte, bien s\u00fbr) ou celle d’une de ses s\u0153urs ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Austrocnemis est un compos\u00e9 du latin Auster<\/em>, pour sud<\/em>, comme dans austral<\/em> ou\u2026 Australie<\/em> et de cnemis<\/em> qui vient d\u2019un mot grec signifiant legging, une allusion aux tibias \u00e9largis des Platycnemis, ce qui pour moi reste myst\u00e9rieux quand on l\u2019applique aux Agriocnemis, aux Argiocnemis ou aux Austrocnemis.
L’origine de Maccullochi est pr\u00e9cis\u00e9e dans la description de Tillyard et est un hommage \u00e0 Mr. Allan R. McCulloch. qui a captur\u00e9 l’holotype.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous ne l’avons rencontr\u00e9 que sur des eaux dormantes, o\u00f9 se d\u00e9veloppent les Water Lilies (n\u00e9nuphars), toujours pos\u00e9s sur les feuilles, jamais en dehors de l’eau. On note que comme pour les m\u00e2les, une pruinosit\u00e9 blanch\u00e2tre envahit leur thorax quand elles prennent de l’\u00e2ge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sa distribution le limite au Sud de la Nouvelle-Guin\u00e9e et au Nord de l’Australie et, en particulier, au Nord du Territoire du Nord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
