On peut consid\u00e9rer Brachydiplax denticauda comme commun dans le Territoire du Nord Australien, nous l’avons rencontr\u00e9 12 jours sur les 24 de notre prospection, mais il peut passer inaper\u00e7u en raison de sa petite taille, 29 mm. Les m\u00e2les sont parfois en plein soleil, mais les femelles sont, comme toujours, plus discr\u00e8tes, et il faut les chercher en sous-bois.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il fr\u00e9quente les eaux calmes, qu’elles soient stagnantes ou \u00e0 faible courant.
Il est pr\u00e9sent en Australie, en Indon\u00e9sie, Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guin\u00e9e et dans les iles Salomon.
En Australie, il est essentiellement costal, depuis le Sud du Queensland \u00e0 l’extr\u00eame Est de l’Australie-Occidentale.

Les m\u00e2les matures sont faciles \u00e0 identifier, typiques du genre, couverts d’une pruinescence d’un bleu lumineux, le front noir m\u00e9tallique et les 3 derniers segments noirs. Un peu plus jeune comme ci-dessous, ils conservent des traces orang\u00e9es sur l’abdomen et jaunes sur le thorax.
Ils peuvent se parer de petites boules rouges, mais ce sont des hydracariens parasites. Cette infestation limit\u00e9e ne devrait pas mettre en danger la vie du sujet ci-dessous.

Les immatures, m\u00e2les, mais surtout femelles, sont, \u00e0 mon sens, les plus beaux. Les anneaux orang\u00e9s qui restent pr\u00e9sents \u00e0 la base de l’abdomen semblent \u00e9clair\u00e9s de l’int\u00e9rieur tant ils sont lumineux !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sur la photo ci-dessous, on comprend l’origine de son nom vernaculaire Palemouth ; hormis son front noir m\u00e9tallique, toute la face est jaune clair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeunes, les m\u00e2les et les femelles sont essentiellement jaunes\/orang\u00e9s, puis le thorax se couvre progressivement d’une pulv\u00e9rulence cireuse (pruinosit\u00e9 ou pruinescence) bleut\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mais les femelles paraissent ne jamais devenir compl\u00e8tement bleues et pr\u00e9sentent un abdomen magnifique, noir et jaune \u00e0 l’extr\u00e9mit\u00e9 de l’abdomen, auxquels s’associent graduellement du bleu, puis de l’orange lumineux vers la base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brachydiplax : brachy<\/em> est un terme Grec<\/em> signifiant court et effectivement les odonates de ce genre sont petits comme je l’ai mentionn\u00e9 plus haut. Diplax<\/em> est une construction des 2 mots Grecs ; dis<\/em> signifiant double<\/em> et plax<\/em> se rapportant \u00e0 toute chose plate et large<\/em>, car la partie post\u00e9rieure du prothorax des odonates de ce genre montre 2 lobes semi-circulaires.
Denticauda : du latin dens<\/em> qui signifie dent<\/em> et cauda<\/em> pour queue d’un animal<\/em> ; en effet, les appendices anaux sup\u00e9rieurs du m\u00e2le portent en leur point le plus large un appendice qui montrent 4 dents, ce que je n’ai pas pens\u00e9 \u00e0 photographier de pr\u00e8s… (1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enfin une derni\u00e8re femelle, cette fois-ci dans le Queensland, o\u00f9 nous avons rencontr\u00e9 \u00e9galement B. duivenbodei. Elles sont tr\u00e8s semblables et pour les diff\u00e9rencier, il faut compter les nervures ant\u00e9nodales aux ailes ant\u00e9rieures et post\u00e9rieures ; respectivement 7 et 6 pour B. duivenbodei, 6 et 5 pour B. denticauda. Heureusement que l’aile post\u00e9rieure droite est nette, l’ant\u00e9rieure est absente, sans doute victime d’un pr\u00e9dateur…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Encore une autre, encore au Queensland, que j’avais identifi\u00e9 \u00e0 tort en B. duivenbodei, ayant d’ailleurs eu du mal \u00e0 compter ses ant\u00e9nodales… A cette occasion, j’ai d’ailleurs appris un crit\u00e8re d’identification non publi\u00e9, de Graham Winterflood, odonatologue local. Si le front de B. duivenbodei est enti\u00e8rement noir, celui de B. denticauda montre 2 triangles jaunes de chaque c\u00f4t\u00e9, ce qu’on voit tr\u00e8s bien ci-dessous…<\/p>\n\n\n\n
