Apr\u00e8s avoir d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu 4 esp\u00e8ces de Crocothemis rouges, Crocothemis nigrifrons est surprenant par sa couleur bleue, mais la forme g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, l’abdomen aplati, sont bien conformes. Kirby s’est lui-m\u00eame fait abuser par sa couleur puisqu’il l’a d\u00e9crit sous le nom d’Orthetrum nigrifrons. On retrouve \u00e9galement la ligne noire plus ou moins marqu\u00e9e sur l’abdomen, la partie post\u00e9rieure des yeux bleus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En revanche, la coloration du thorax est bien diff\u00e9rente de celle de l’abdomen, la costale post nodale est jaune, et la face et le front (!) sont d’un noir m\u00e9tallique (Black-headed Skimmer). Je n’ai trouv\u00e9 les m\u00e2les matures que sur l’eau et je n’ai jamais r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 m’en approcher de fa\u00e7on satisfaisante ; toutes les photos ont \u00e9t\u00e9 faites d’un peu trop loin, souvent au flash. Les femelles et les m\u00e2les immatures trouv\u00e9s \u00e0 distance de l’eau ont \u00e9t\u00e9 plus faciles \u00e0 approcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On note comme la base des ailes post\u00e9rieures ne porte qu’une faible zone ambr\u00e9e.
Il mesure environ 46 mm ce qui en fait un sujet un peu plus long que notre Crocothemis erythraea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ci-dessus, on observe que les vieux m\u00e2les noircissent, perdant m\u00eame par endroits la couverture pulv\u00e9rulente bleue.
La position dite \u00ab\u00a0en ob\u00e9lisque\u00a0\u00bb est salutaire pour les Libellulidae Australiens (diminuant ainsi la surface du corps expos\u00e9 au soleil), qui d\u00e9fendent leur territoire en plein soleil, sachant que la temp\u00e9rature \u00e0 l’ombre \u00e9tait, comme d’habitude…, de l’ordre de 38\u00b0 C.

Comme presque toujours pour les Libellulidae, les m\u00e2les immatures sont peu color\u00e9s et partagent leurs teintes avec les femelles. De ce fait, ils ressemblent aux immatures de notre Crocothemis erythraea, car on note chez les jeunes (et les femelles) l’absence de coloration noire sur le front et la face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’abdomen de la femelle est peut-\u00eatre un peu plus large, sinon c’est la copie du m\u00e2le immature, sauf… la fameuse lame vulvaire des femelles des Crocothemis, presque perpendiculaire \u00e0 l’abdomen que l’on voit tr\u00e8s bien sur la photo ci-dessous. Mais sur photos, rien ne la distingue de nos femelles Crocothemis erythraea.
Celle-ci porte en plus sur les ailes droites ce qui me semble \u00eatre des dipt\u00e8res parasites, probablement du genre Forcipomyia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C’est un Odonate commun en Australie, en tout cas dans les zones costales ; sa carte de r\u00e9partition sur le guide (3) le montre quasiment tout autour de l’ile<\/em>. Cependant, dans le dernier travail de Ian Endersby (2), il est surtout pr\u00e9sent sur la c\u00f4te Est, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 il y a des observateurs (!), avec quelques donn\u00e9es \u00e9tonnantes dans le sud du Territoire du Nord, soit en plein centre de l’Australie. Je me m\u00e9fie un peu, car je viens de faire enlever une donn\u00e9e de C. nigrifrons sur l’Atlas of Living Australia<\/em> (excellent, par ailleurs) qui montrait une photo de Diplacodes haematodes ; celui-ci ressemble en effet \u00e0 un Crocothemis… mais il est rouge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crocothemis, du grec crokos<\/em> – qui a donn\u00e9 crocus<\/em> en latin – safran\u00e9<\/em> en r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 la couleur de la base de l’aile et de Themis – d\u00e9esse grecque de l’ordre, de la justice. Hagen en 1861 a cr\u00e9\u00e9 plusieurs noms de genres termin\u00e9s par le suffixe Themis, sans doute parce que d’autres noms de libellules comportaient des noms de dieux comme Echo ou Nehalennia. Le nom de la d\u00e9esse de l’ordre est particuli\u00e8rement bien adapt\u00e9 \u00e0 la taxonomie, science qui vise \u00e0 d\u00e9crire et ordonner les familles, genres et esp\u00e8ces.
Nigrifrons est plus \u00e9vident, du latin niger<\/em>, noir<\/em> et frons<\/em>, front<\/em>, cela en r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 la face noire de cet odonate.

Finissons par 2 femelles qui ont de la bouteille… elles ont perdu la couleur dor\u00e9e sur l’abdomen pour, elles aussi, se couvrir de pruine ; esth\u00e9tiquement, ce n’est pas une r\u00e9ussite !<\/p>\n\n\n\n
