Si nous avons rencontr\u00e9 9 fois Gynacantha dobsoni  (Aeshnidae) durant notre s\u00e9jour, c’est toujours par la pr\u00e9sence d’un seul individu en m\u00eame temps, et \u00e9tonnamment, je n’ai vu que ce m\u00e2le, toutes les autres rencontres \u00e9taient des femelles. Si je mentionne cette notion de nombre, c’est que nous avons eu des rencontres m\u00e9morables avec son cousin tr\u00e8s commun, G. nourlangie, avec parfois 7 ou 8 individus en m\u00eame temps dans des espaces restreints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il n’y a d’ailleurs que ces 2 esp\u00e8ces de Gynacantha dans le Territoire du Nord ; ils sont difficiles \u00e0 confondre, car s’ils ont tous les 2 la taille fine, le S3 \u00e9trangl\u00e9, leur coloration diff\u00e8re totalement. G. dobsoni arbore des yeux verts, un abdomen brun tr\u00e8s sombre avec des points jaunes pairs, tandis que G. nourlangie est globalement terne (comme la plupart des esp\u00e8ces du genre), l’abdomen avec des anneaux jaunes, avec des yeux marron tr\u00e8s clair ou beiges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

M\u00e2les et femelles sont actives au cr\u00e9puscule, comme de nombreux Aeshnidae. Cela leur vaut d’ailleurs le nom de duskhawker<\/em> en anglais.
Ils aiment donc se poser \u00e0 l’ombre, et en hauteur, en for\u00eat, ce qui rend les photos difficiles…
La contrepartie est qu’ils sont les seuls \u00e0 voler tard, \u00e0 chasser, dans des espaces d\u00e9couverts comme des prairies ou des all\u00e9es entour\u00e9es d’arbres et qu’en se postant au bon endroit, on peut parfois les capturer, pour assurer leur identification.

On remarque les splendides appendices anaux de la femelle, une sp\u00e9cificit\u00e9 des femelles Gynacantha ; ils sont au moins aussi longs que les 3 derniers segments abdominaux. On observe \u00e9galement les palpes, ces 2 petits filaments clairs, \u00e0 la limite du 8\u00b0 et 9\u00b0 segment. Ce sont des organes sensitifs qui permettent \u00e0 la femelle de v\u00e9rifier le si le substrat qu’elle teste est adapt\u00e9 \u00e0 recevoir ses \u0153ufs et sans doute \u00e0 assurer le bon d\u00e9roulement de cette ponte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le point noir que l’on observe sur la face lat\u00e9rale de leur thorax semble commun au Gynacantha australiens.
On note aussi la similitude positions adopt\u00e9es pour se reposer, presque toujours verticales.

Il est end\u00e9mique d’Australie et se limite au nord du Territoire du Nord et du Queensland.

Le terme Gynacantha a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9 par Rambur \u00e0 partir de 2 mots grecs : Gyna <\/em>pour femelle<\/em> et canta<\/em> pour \u00e9pine<\/em>, car les femelles de ce genre portent 2 \u00e9pines sous le 10\u00b0 segment. On ne les voit malheureusement pas sur ma photo, la face inf\u00e9rieure du 10\u00b0 segment semble couvert d’un d\u00e9p\u00f4t, sans doute un substrat de ponte.
Dobsoni est un hommage \u00e0 Mr Roderick Dobson de Sydney qui a captur\u00e9 l’esp\u00e8ce (1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sur cette derni\u00e8re photo, on remarque la forme de la base des ailes post\u00e9rieures des femelles ; elles sont arrondies et c’est \u00e0 comparer avec celles des m\u00e2les (premi\u00e8re photo<\/a>) o\u00f9 elles forment un angle tr\u00e8s net ; c’est peut-\u00eatre en rapport avec les auricules qu’ils portent sur le 2\u00b0 segment. Ce qui soul\u00e8ve la question du r\u00f4le des auricules, question actuellement sans r\u00e9ponse…<\/p>\n\n\n\n
