Cette photo permet tout de suite de situer la difficult\u00e9 d’identifier Anax gibbosulus sur de nombreuses photos : il ressemble \u00e9norm\u00e9ment \u00e0 Anax guttatus, moins commun si l’on consid\u00e8re l’Australie enti\u00e8re, mais bien pr\u00e9sent dans le Territoire du Nord. La seule fa\u00e7on commode de les diff\u00e9rencier est la pr\u00e9sence pour Anax gibbosulus de la forme noire projet\u00e9e \u00e0 l’extr\u00e9mit\u00e9 ant\u00e9rieure du front, et qui est d\u00e9crite comme formant un \u00ab\u00a0T\u00a0\u00bb (sans doute par quelqu’un qui \u00e9crit tr\u00e8s mal).
Cette marque est compl\u00e8tement absente pour A. guttatus, mais elle n’est pas forc\u00e9ment aussi marqu\u00e9e, noire, pour les A. gibbosulus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ce Green Emperor (toutes les photos prises \u00e0 Jabiru) n’a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 captur\u00e9, mais sauv\u00e9 du \u00ab\u00a0bloc sanitaire\u00a0\u00bb du camping, photographi\u00e9 en main puis remis en libert\u00e9. Il porte un motif assez particulier sur l’abdomen, mais ceux de A. guttatus sont tr\u00e8s similaires et tout aussi variables en intensit\u00e9.
Dans les 2 esp\u00e8ces, les ailes peuvent \u00eatre partiellement ambr\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heureusement, les appendices anaux sont l\u00e9g\u00e8rement diff\u00e9rents, ceux de A. gibbosulus ont globalement un aspect un peu plus rectangulaire en raison du large lobe interne terminal et surtout une lame anale tr\u00e8s courte. La lame anale d’A. guttatus est donc l\u00e9g\u00e8rement plus longue, l\u00e9g\u00e8rement, c’est ce qui fait que je pense que les appendices ci-dessous appartiennent au seul A. guttatus que j’ai rencontr\u00e9 en Australie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Je ne l’ai pas mesur\u00e9, mais heureusement \ud83d\ude00 Rambur l’a fait pour Anax formosus et il nous dit dans son Histoire Naturelle des Insectes N\u00e9vropt\u00e8res qu’il est (A. gibbosulus) \u00ab\u00a0De la taille de Formosus, mais plus long\u00a0\u00bb. Sans doute faut-il comprendre qu’il est plus fin…, toujours est-il qu’il nous dit que ce grand odonate (Anax formosus) mesure plus de 8 cm.
Anax formosus est un synonyme de notre Anax imperator (Rambur ignorait que c’\u00e9tait la m\u00eame esp\u00e8ce, avec une aire de distribution gigantesque), et nous savons en effet que ce dernier peut atteindre 84 mm.
En Australie, sa distribution le limite aux r\u00e9gions c\u00f4ti\u00e8res du Queensland, du Territoire du Nord et \u00e0 l’extr\u00eame nord-est de l’Australie occidentale. Mais on le rencontre des iles Salomon jusqu’en Indon\u00e9sie (Sulawesi, Petites iles de la Sonde) en passant par la Nouvelle-Cal\u00e9donie.

Ci-dessus, un autre sujet pour montrer que les Aeshnidae cachent leur appareil g\u00e9nital secondaire au fond d’une fosse g\u00e9nitale, sous le 2\u00b0 segment de leur abdomen, tr\u00e8s extraordinairement aplati, comme d’ailleurs la base du premier segment et du thorax ; la r\u00e8gle n’est pas de les cacher chez les odonates dont de nombreuses esp\u00e8ces exhibent (ici Somatochlora metallica<\/a> en France) leur genitalia<\/a>, qui servent d’ailleurs souvent \u00e0 leur identification.
On remarque \u00e9galement l’absence d’auricules et d’angle anal pour les Anax.
Noter ci-dessous comme le \u00ab\u00a0T\u00a0\u00bb de la partie toute ant\u00e9rieure du front est l\u00e9ger chez ce sujet, pourtant largement mature comme en t\u00e9moigne sa voilure en lambeaux. Encore une fois, la lame anale appara\u00eet tr\u00e8s courte.

Il habite les marais, mais aussi les eaux plus ou moins saum\u00e2tres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Anax vient d\u2019un mot grec signifiant roi<\/em>, souverain<\/em> et est attribu\u00e9 au caract\u00e8re dominant que sugg\u00e8rent sa grande taille et son comportement.
Gibbosulus vient d’un mot latin signifiant bosse<\/em> auquel est ajout\u00e9 le diminutif ulus<\/em>, pour signifier la pr\u00e9sence d’une petite bosse (gibbosit\u00e9) sur la face dorsale du 2\u00b0 segment, ce qu’on voit tr\u00e8s bien ci-dessous. On remarque \u00e9galement, ce que mentionne la description originale de Rambur, le bord distal relev\u00e9 du premier segment (1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quelques mois plus tard, dans le nord du Queensland, nous n’avons pas vu de m\u00e2le, mais nous avons eu le plaisir d’observer une femelle en ponte, h\u00e9las, de tr\u00e8s loin… On confirme son appartenance \u00e0 l’esp\u00e8ce gibbosulus en regardant le front de la femelle sur la photo de gauche, o\u00f9 l’on distingue le fameux \u00ab\u00a0T\u00a0\u00bb sur le front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
