Si nous avons souvent rencontr\u00e9 ce Libellulidae 11 jours sur 24, c’est surtout en vol !
Hydrobasileus brevistylus a une couleur un peu \u00e9tonnante pour un Libellulidae mature, plus proche des Gomphus avec cet habit noir et jaune (ou de notre Orthetrum cancellatum femelle), mais sa fa\u00e7on de rester en vol pour se nourrir ou \u00e0 la recherche de femelles l’\u00e9carte de cette autre famille.
Il se perche assez haut, trop pour les photographes, et nous ne l’avons surpris pos\u00e9 que 2 fois.

Une rencontre a \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s int\u00e9ressante, car elle a permis d’observer un sujet porteur d’une forte infestation de parasites, des hydracariens, sans doute du genre Arrenurus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Et la surprise a \u00e9t\u00e9 de constater ult\u00e9rieurement, sur photos, que 2 esp\u00e8ces de parasites \u00e9taient repr\u00e9sent\u00e9es : l’Arrenurus d\u00e9j\u00e0 cit\u00e9, sous formes de petites billes rouge\u00e2tres, et 2 dipt\u00e8res, sans doute du genre Forcipomyia, sur l’aire post\u00e9rieure gauche que l’on voit tr\u00e8s bien ci-dessous. C’est la premi\u00e8re fois que j’observe cette double infestation. Les 2 esp\u00e8ces se nourrissent de la lymphe de l’odonate, et finiront par se d\u00e9tacher spontan\u00e9ment lorsqu’elles auront achev\u00e9 leur cycle de croissance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cette infestation, surtout celle due aux hydracariens, permettrait de deviner leur habitat ; il est en effet excessivement rare de trouver des odonates de rivi\u00e8re ou de ruisseau ainsi infest\u00e9. Et en effet, Hydrobasileus brevistylus fr\u00e9quente les marais, les \u00e9tangs et les mares.
On note la largeur de son aile post\u00e9rieure, adapt\u00e9e au vol au long cours, comme les Rhyothemis variegata et phyllis, ou autres Pantala flavescens.

On remarque aussi que lorsqu’ils sont pos\u00e9s, l’abdomen adopte une forme arqu\u00e9e, concave en haut., qui peut certainement aider \u00e0 les reconna\u00eetre \u00e0 distance tant cette attitude est rare parmi les Libellulidae.

Il mesure environ 55 mm pour 100 mm d’envergure, ce qui le classe tout de m\u00eame parmi les grands Libellulidae.

On le rencontre en Indon\u00e9sie, Nouvelle-Guin\u00e9e, aux Iles Salomon et en Australie o\u00f9 il occupe essentiellement le nord du Territoire du Nord et les r\u00e9gions c\u00f4ti\u00e8res du Queensland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous n’avons pas rencontr\u00e9 de femelle isol\u00e9e, \u00e0 moins que l’une d’elle ne nous ait survol\u00e9, mais il est tout m\u00eame difficile de sexer la plupart des odonates en vol ! C’est plus facile quand les odonates sont en tandem<\/em>, et c’est la seule photo de femelle que j’ai pu r\u00e9aliser. C’est une prise tr\u00e8s recadr\u00e9e, \u00e0 contre-jour, mais elle permet tout de m\u00eame d’observer la masse des \u0153ufs \u00e0 l’extr\u00e9mit\u00e9 de l’abdomen de cette femelle en ponte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le livre de Ian Endersby (1) explique l’\u00e9tymologie du nom bien singulier de cet odonate :
– Hydrobasileus est constitu\u00e9 de 2 mots grecs, hydro<\/em> pour eau<\/em> et le second signifiant roi<\/em>, mais rien n’explique cette \u00e9tymologie dans la description originale. On ne sait pas pourquoi il n’est que roi alors que d’autres sont empereurs \ud83e\uddd0
– brevistylus des mots latins brevis<\/em> signifiant court<\/em> et stilus<\/em> pour stylet<\/em>. L\u00e0, Brauer nous donne l’explication :\u00a0\u00bbAppendicibus feminae brevissimis, nigra\u00a0\u00bb … et oui, en 1865 on continuait parfois \u00e0 utiliser le Latin comme une langue internationale parmi les scientifiques. En Fran\u00e7ois<\/em>, Brauer exprime que les appendices anaux de la femelle sont tr\u00e8s courts et noirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
