Austroaeschna speciosa, le Tropical unicorn darner, fait partie des Telephlebiidae qui est une famille end\u00e9mique de l’est et du sud-ouest de l’Australie. Cliquez pour agrandir les images, click to enarge pictures.<\/span>
Une fois n’est pas coutume, commen\u00e7ons par l’explication du nom commun, qui semble un peu \u00e9tonnant. En effet, si le nom de cet unicorn darner<\/em> est affubl\u00e9 du qualificatif Tropical<\/em>, c’est qu’il existe un unicorn darner<\/em>… qui n’est pas tropical. Un beaucoup plus commun, qui vit plus au sud, hors de la zone tropicale et qui a pour nom Austroaeschna unicornis. Ils sont tr\u00e8s ressemblants, mais autour de Cairns o\u00f9 nous avons prospect\u00e9, le second n’est pas pr\u00e9sent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Venons-en \u00e0 unicorn<\/em> : une licorne ? C’est sans doute un peu exag\u00e9r\u00e9, mais comme on le voit tr\u00e8s bien ci-dessus, l’esp\u00e8ce porte une \u00ab\u00a0corne\u00a0\u00bb juste en arri\u00e8re de l’occiput, entre les 2 yeux. Quant \u00e0 darner, c’est le terme utilis\u00e9 par les anglo-am\u00e9ricains pour d\u00e9signer les Aeshnidae (c’est un Austroaeschna<\/strong>…) parce que la forme de l’abdomen et des appendices anaux \u00e9voque une aiguille \u00e0 repriser, darning needle<\/em>, en anglais.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C’est en tout cas une esp\u00e8ce magnifique, d’une rare couleur et nous regrettons de ne pas avoir eu la chance de rencontrer le m\u00e2le. Il mesure environ 65 mm avec une envergure de plus de 90 mm.
Austroaeschna speciosa habite les zones rocheuses des ruisseaux et rivi\u00e8res, et ici, peu apr\u00e8s les chutes de la rivi\u00e8re, nous avions la rivi\u00e8re Davis en contrebas, un cours d’eau tr\u00e8s plaisant (avec de l’ombre !) envahi de rocher, dans lequel nous avons pu cheminer et trouver Telephlebia tillyardi, entre autres. Ici, mon ami Chris mitraille notre d\u00e9couverte, qui s’est montr\u00e9e tr\u00e8s patiente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il y a peu de donn\u00e9es sur cette esp\u00e8ce apparemment rare ; sa distribution est tr\u00e8s localis\u00e9e, sur une bande nord-sud d’une centaine de kilom\u00e8tres, au sud-ouest de Cairns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Austroaeschna (1) est un compos\u00e9 du latin Auster<\/em> (vent du sud) pour sud<\/em>, comme dans austral<\/em> ou\u2026 Australie<\/em> et Aeschna.
Aeschna est un cas particulier dans l’\u00e9tymologie des noms d’odonates. Il est ici \u00e9crit dans sa version corrig\u00e9e<\/em>, et on a, en Europe, l’habitude de l’\u00e9crire sans \u00ab\u00a0c\u00a0\u00bb, la version de Fabricius (1775) qui a cr\u00e9\u00e9 le nom de genre Aeshna.
On suppose, car il ne l’a pas pr\u00e9cis\u00e9, que Fabricius a form\u00e9 ce nom depuis un mot grec signifiant d\u00e9figurer<\/em> ou ternir<\/em> (pourquoi, c’est une autre \u00e9nigme ?) ; mais Fabricius est un puriste et on ne peut expliquer cette absence de \u00ab\u00a0c \u00a0\u00bb que par une erreur de transcription ou une erreur typographique.
L’absence de ce \u00ab\u00a0c\u00a0\u00bb n’est rest\u00e9e la norme que pour le genre Aeshna et tous les \u00ab\u00a0compos\u00e9s\u00a0\u00bb l’ont int\u00e9gr\u00e9.
Speciosa vient du latin speciosus , signifiant beau, bel aspect, et je suis du m\u00eame avis \ud83d\ude42

La place de ces Austroaeschna, leur appartenance \u00e0 une famille ou une autre, leur identit\u00e9 m\u00eame reste d\u00e9battue et en 1982, le sp\u00e9cialiste australien G\u00fcnther Theischinger, dans \u00ab\u00a0A revision of the Australian genera Austroaeschna Selys and Notoaeschna Tillyard (Odonata : Aeshnidae : Brachytroninae<\/em>)<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb classait cette esp\u00e8ce comme une sous-esp\u00e8ce de Aeschna unicornis appartenant au Aeshnidae (sans \u00ab\u00a0c\u00a0\u00bb, attention!). C’est un document que l’on peut consulter ici<\/strong><\/a>.
Depuis, le la taxinomie a \u00e9volu\u00e9, comme je la pr\u00e9sente, mais je n’ai pas trouv\u00e9 d’article expliquant l’\u00e9volution qui nous m\u00e8ne \u00e0 la situation actuelle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8 mois apr\u00e8s avoir r\u00e9dig\u00e9 cet article, j’ai trouv\u00e9 un m\u00e2le qui \u00e9tait mal identifi\u00e9. Nous ne l’avons aper\u00e7u qu’en vol et je n’en ai r\u00e9ussi que de pauvres photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
