Il y a 2 Brachydiplax en Australie ; Brachydiplax duivenbodei et B. denticauda<\/a>. Les m\u00e2les sont faciles \u00e0 diff\u00e9rencier, car les seconds (Palemouth en anglais) sont noirs sur les 3 ou 4 derniers segments et ont la face enti\u00e8rement claire (sauf le front m\u00e9tallique).
Nous avons rencontr\u00e9 les 2 esp\u00e8ces au Queensland, seul B. denticauda est pr\u00e9sent dans le Territoire du Nord.
Brachydiplax duivenbodei semble pr\u00e9f\u00e9rer les eaux calmes m\u00eame stagnantes, mais des zones plus \u00e0 l’ombre que son cousin, quoiqu’on puisse trouver les 2 esp\u00e8ces \u00e0 quelques m\u00e8tres l’une de l’autre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On le devine \u00e0 peine sur les premi\u00e8res photos, mais son labrum<\/a> est largement marqu\u00e9 de noir, ce qui lui vaut l’appellation commune de Darkmouth. Ce crit\u00e8re a peu d’importance pour les m\u00e2les qui sont ais\u00e9s \u00e0 identifier, mais il est pr\u00e9cieux pour les femelles quand la nervation n’est pas correctement visible.
Dans sa description originale (2), Brauer nomme cette nouvelle esp\u00e8ce Perithemis Duivenbodei (sic), ce qui est assez surprenant, car le genre Perithemis est strictement limit\u00e9 au continent am\u00e9ricain, ce qui ne devait pas \u00eatre connu en 1866. Il est alors mesur\u00e9 \u00e0 30 – 31 mm.
Sa distribution g\u00e9ographique le limite au Queensland, avec beaucoup d’observations autour de Cairns, mais aussi en Indon\u00e9sie et aux Iles Salomon.

Graham Winterflood un odonatologue local connu sur Inaturalist m’a donn\u00e9 un crit\u00e8re qui n’est pas mentionn\u00e9 sur les guides et qui r\u00e9sulte de ses propres observations ; si le front de B. duivenbodei est compl\u00e8tement noir m\u00e9tallique, la coloration pour B. denticauda respecte un triangle externe qui reste jaune\/clair, ce que l’on constate facilement ici<\/a>.
Ce crit\u00e8re m’a malheureusement permis de classer ce que je croyais \u00eatre une femelle Brachydiplax duivenbodei, la seule pos\u00e9e, en B. denticauda ; j’avais d’ailleurs eu des difficult\u00e9s \u00e0 v\u00e9rifier la nervation\u2026
Il ne me reste donc que ces photos d’une ou 2 femelles en ponte, je ne sais pas, les photos ayant \u00e9t\u00e9 faites \u00e0 20 minutes d’\u00e9cart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brachydiplax :\u00a0brachy<\/em>\u00a0est un terme\u00a0Grec<\/em>\u00a0signifiant court et effectivement les odonates d\/e ce genre sont petits comme je l\u2019ai mentionn\u00e9 plus haut.\u00a0Diplax<\/em>\u00a0est une construction des 2 mots Grecs ;\u00a0dis<\/em>\u00a0signifiant\u00a0double<\/em>\u00a0et\u00a0plax<\/em>\u00a0se rapportant \u00e0\u00a0toute chos\/e plate et large<\/em>, car la partie post\u00e9rieure du prothorax des odonates de ce genre montre 2 lobes semi-circulaires.
Duivenbodei ; il n’y a pas d’explication dans la description de Brauer, mais Kaup, directeur de mus\u00e9e en Allemagne a re\u00e7u des sp\u00e9cimens d’e’un Hollandais, Renesse van Duivenbode, alors r\u00e9sident au Sulawesi (Indon\u00e9sie). Wallace (la fameuse Ligne !) \u00e9crit d’ailleurs au fameux Darwin qu’il a pr\u00eat\u00e9 son non moins fameux livre \u00ab\u00a0On the Origin of Species\u00a0\u00bb a un Hollandais,M. Duivenbode qui l’a lu 3 fois (1). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
