Camacinia othello (Libellulidae), le Black knight, ressemble \u00e0 un grand Neurothemis stigmatizans dont la coloration alaire, tr\u00e8s sombre, serait restreinte \u00e0 la zone ante nodale. Mais il est beaucoup plus grand puisqu’il atteint 65 mm de longueur totale avec une envergure de 115 mm. Nous n’avons malheureusement pas rencontr\u00e9 de femelle ; elles montrent une coloration alaire \u00e9tonnamment diff\u00e9rente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous ne l’avons rencontr\u00e9 qu’une seule fois, dans le Jardin botanique de Cairns, sur une toute petite mare, tout d’abord en vol o\u00f9 nous avons essay\u00e9 sans grand succ\u00e8s de le prendre en photo. Puis pos\u00e9, mais il a toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s difficile \u00e0 approcher. De plus, comme on le constate, il aime \u00e0 se poser en hauteur, au sommet des rameaux et branchettes.
Il est certainement tr\u00e8s peu commun (62 donn\u00e9es en 6 ans sur Atlas of Living Australia<\/a>) et son mode de vie n’est pas bien connu. Il doit pr\u00e9f\u00e9rer les eaux stagnantes, ici, une petite mare, mais Tillyard l’a captur\u00e9 sur un billabong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En Australie, son aire de r\u00e9partition se limite \u00e0 la zone costale \u00e9tendue du Queensland et du Territoire du Nord.
Mais on le rencontre \u00e9galement en Indon\u00e9sie, en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guin\u00e9e et dans les \u00eeles Salomon.

Camacinia (1) pourrait venir d’un mot grec signifiant roseau<\/em> ou cane<\/em>, auquel est ajout\u00e9, dans le but de le f\u00e9miniser, le suffixe ia<\/em>, afin de conserver le f\u00e9minin du genre Neurothemis dont on venait de l’extraire. L’apparence en roseau pourrait se r\u00e9f\u00e9rer \u00e0 la forme de l’abdomen, aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s parall\u00e8les (et aux cannelures bien visibles). Un peu compliqu\u00e9…
L’explication fournie pour Othello n’est pas vraiment satisfaisante m\u00eame si l’on sait que Othello, le h\u00e9ros de Sheakspeare, a la peau fonc\u00e9 et que Tillyard insiste dans sa description sur la \u00a0\u00bb contraction (sic) et l’intensification de la coloration de la pigmentation sombre des ailes\u00a0\u00bb par rapport, sans doute, \u00e0 Camacinia gigantea qui n’est pas pr\u00e9sent en Australie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
