Brachythemis impartita\u00a0 (Libellulidae) semble tr\u00e8s commun, omnipr\u00e9sent au bord des lacs, mais son identification n\u00e9cessite de la rigueur, car son cousin Brachythemis leucosticta est aussi pr\u00e9sent en \u00c9thiopie (limite nord de sa r\u00e9partition) et ils sont indiscernables \u00e0 premi\u00e8re vue\u202f; ils sont d’ailleurs rest\u00e9s confondus pendant 170 ans !
K.D. Dijkstra et\u00a0N. Matushkina ont apport\u00e9 la solution dans\u00a0Kindred spirits : \u201cBrachythemis leucosticta\u201d, Africa’s most familiar dragonfly, consists of two species (Odonata: Libellulidae)<\/em>, dans International Journal of Odonatology,\u00a0Volume 12 (2) 2009.
La diff\u00e9rence la plus simple \u00e0 mettre en \u0153uvre sur le terrain et sur photo se situe au niveau du pt\u00e9rostigma et de la nervation. Pour B. impartita la partie proximale des veines qui bordent en avant et en arri\u00e8re le pt\u00e9rostigma (veine costale et sub costale), les veines sous ce pt\u00e9rostigma sont claires. Malheureusement, le comportement de l’esp\u00e8ce ne facilite pas les choses, car elle volette \u00e0 ras du sol sur lequel elle se pose quasi invariablement et la coloration du sol influe sur notre perception de la couleur de ces veines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ils ont relev\u00e9 d’autres diff\u00e9rences, bien s\u00fbr sur les appendices anaux et le lobe g\u00e9nital, mais aussi le nombre de cellules dans le champ disco\u00efdal plus \u00e9lev\u00e9 pour B. impartita, qui ne d\u00e9passe jamais 86 pour B. leucosticta (sur un \u00e9chantillon de 1154 m\u00e2les…). Ci-dessous, sur ce B. impartita \u00e9mergent, il d\u00e9passe la centaine. On note \u00e9galement sur ce sujet qui vient de faire son vol inaugural que le crit\u00e8re de pt\u00e9rostigma et de nervation est d\u00e9j\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent, sur l’aile ant\u00e9rieure (l’aile post\u00e9rieure ayant certainement eu un \u00ab\u00a0probl\u00e8me\u00a0\u00bb lors de l’\u00e9mergence).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On note aussi les bandes caract\u00e9ristiques des yeux de tous les Brachythemis, m\u00eame ceux du rouge B. lacustris en Afrique ou de l’orange B. contaminata en Asie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ci-dessus \u00e0 gauche un jeune m\u00e2le, mais il faut noter que le m\u00e2le nettement plus \u00e2g\u00e9 \u00e0 droite ne montre pas un abdomen (ou thorax comme ci-dessous) vraiment noir (plut\u00f4t brun\u00e2tre) comme les B. leucosticta, on peut comparer ici<\/a><\/em> avec des sujets sud-africains, contr\u00e9e o\u00f9 il n’y a pas ce genre de probl\u00e8me d’identification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pour les femelles, la situation est beaucoup plus complexe quand les deux esp\u00e8ces sont pr\u00e9sentes, car selon les m\u00eames auteurs, il n’y a pas actuellement de possibilit\u00e9 de les identifier… On peut tout de m\u00eame avoir de tr\u00e8s fortes indications pour une femelle quand dans un environnement sableux, on n’a rencontr\u00e9 \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 d’elle que des m\u00e2les B. impartita. En effet, les larves de B. impartita pr\u00e9f\u00e9reraient les substrats sableux, celles de B. leucosticta les substrats ou domine la boue ou la vase.
Mais K. D. Dijkstra m’a confirm\u00e9 que m\u00eame les femelles qui montrent le m\u00eame type de pt\u00e9rostigma, c’est-\u00e0-dire avec la partie proximale des marges claires, ne peuvent \u00eatre s\u00e9rieusement identifi\u00e9es, que donc ce crit\u00e8re n’est pas valide pour les femelles.
Je montre donc quelques femelles, avec ces r\u00e9serves. Sur le site du lac Chamo, je n’ai vu que des m\u00e2les Brachythemis impartita ainsi, je suis bien confiant pour l’identification de la jeune femelle de gauche ci-dessous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

J’ai moins de certitude pour celle de droite sur un site ou je n’ai pas de photo de m\u00e2le. Mais la partie proximale des pt\u00e9rostigmas est bien bord\u00e9e de clair…
Enfin, le premier novembre 2018, j’ai prospect\u00e9 de bon matin un tout petit secteur de la rive sableuse du lac Langano<\/a> et j’ai d\u00fb attendre 6 heures 50 avant d’apercevoir les premiers Brachythemis. Quelques minutes plus tard, j’ai trouv\u00e9 les premi\u00e8res \u00e9mergences dans les herbes. Le sujet ci-dessous montre une aile un peu ab\u00eem\u00e9e, mais il a d\u00e9coll\u00e9 devant moi pour se poser l\u00e0 o\u00f9 on le voit ici.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il mesure environ 30 mm, un peu plus petit que B. leucosticta qui atteint environ 34 mm. La limite nord de sa r\u00e9partition atteint l’Espagne, la Sicile et la Sardaigne, elle est plus incertaine au sud ou B. leucosticta et impartita cohabitent et o\u00f9 les donn\u00e9es anciennes ne sont pas valides puisqu’on ignorait que deux esp\u00e8ces \u00e9taient pr\u00e9sentes.\u00a0 Grossi\u00e8rement, cette limite sud se situerait sur la ligne Gabon – Tanzanie.\u00a0
