Apr\u00e8s 37 heures de voyage dont 23 heures d’avion, 2 heures apr\u00e8s avoir atterri le 1 d\u00e9cembre 2022 \u00e0 Cairns, j’ai enfin les pieds dans l’eau, dans la Freshwater Creek, qui longe notre camping, tout pr\u00e8s de Cairns. Ces sont les deux premi\u00e8res photos que j’ai faites, ayant provoqu\u00e9 l’envol de ce Gomphidae \u00e9mergent. Nous l’identifierons plus tard comme Hemigomphus comitatus, pour son motif thoracique et pour la touffe de soie que l’on distingue sous son S8 (photo de droite, clic !).

Plus tard, nous avons heureusement rencontr\u00e9 des adultes, qui se diff\u00e9rencient sans probl\u00e8me des trois autres Hemigomphus pr\u00e9sents dans la r\u00e9gion, pour peu qu’on ait une vue correcte de l’abdomen qui montre des motifs doubles sur les segments 3 \u00e0 6. De plus, Hemigomphus comitatus pr\u00e9sente une touffe de soies sous S7 et<\/strong> S8, comme H. heteroclytus que je n’ai pas vu, ou H. atratus qui est myst\u00e9rieux et dont il n’existe pas de photo de terrain et une seule photo des ailes…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tillyard, dans \u00ab\u00a0On some rare Australian Gomphinae, with descriptions of new species\u00a0\u00bb, Proceedings of the Linnean Society of New South Wales. 34: 238\u2013255 [245], o\u00f9 il est d’ailleurs d\u00e9crit sous le genre Austrogomphus, pr\u00e9cise qu’il mesure 42 mm.
Les Australiens le nomment Zebra vicetail.

Sa distribution g\u00e9ographique est tr\u00e8s limit\u00e9e puisqu’on ne le rencontre que dans le nord-est du Queensland, sur la bande c\u00f4ti\u00e8re et les montagnes proches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il habite les rivi\u00e8res, petites et moyennes, en milieu bois\u00e9 ou non. Celle de Freshwater Creek, \u00e0 Cairns \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s arbor\u00e9e, avec quelques zones d\u00e9gag\u00e9es, celle de Old Herbert, beaucoup plus large et rapide, \u00e9tait en milieu ouvert.

Atlas of Living Australia<\/a>
IUCN Red List<\/a> qui pr\u00e9cise qu’en 2016, il n’\u00e9tait connu que d’une vingtaine de sites en Australie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les femelles sont tr\u00e8s spectaculaires avec la corne qu’elles portent sur la t\u00eate, comme les femelles H. theischingeri. On la la voit tr\u00e8s bien en cliquant sur la photo ci-dessous \u00e0 gauche. Elle est moins visible, mais d\u00e9passe nettement entre les yeux de celle de droite, photographi\u00e9e dans les gorges de la rivi\u00e8re Tully, o\u00f9 la chaleur insoutenable, d\u00e8s 8 heures le matin, nous a fait \u00e9courter notre prospection.
Noter comme les marques abdominales doubles sont r\u00e9duites pour cette 2\u00b0 photo, r\u00e9duites, mais bien discernables tout de m\u00eame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hemigomphus (1), du grec \u2013hemi<\/em>, pour moiti\u00e9<\/em> et \u2013gomphus<\/em>, qui vient, lui, d\u2019un mot grec qui signifie cheville<\/em> ou boulon<\/em>, en r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 la forme de l\u2019abdomen (de la plupart des esp\u00e8ces), qui ressemble \u00e0 une cheville pour assembler les bateaux<\/em>. Hemigomphus a \u00e9t\u00e9 construit comme Hemianax, signifiant la proximit\u00e9 avec le genre Gomphus.
Comitatus, du latin comito<\/em> signifie –accompagner<\/em>.
