Rhyothemis braganza est un petit Libellulidae et fait partie de ce genre spectaculaires aux ailes richement d\u00e9cor\u00e9es que l’on trouve en Afrique, en Asie et dans la r\u00e9gion Australo-Pacifique. 5 esp\u00e8ces sont pr\u00e9sentes en Australie, nous les avons toutes rencontr\u00e9es.
Ci-dessus sont les 2 seuls m\u00e2les dont les photos sont \u00ab\u00a0montrables\u00a0\u00bb en raison du grand vent lors de ces 2 rencontres. Il est pourtant rare de voir plus de femelles que de m\u00e2les, et je n’ai pas d’explication, sinon le hasard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les femelles Rhyothemis braganza sont identiques aux m\u00e2les au d\u00e9tail pr\u00e8s des appendices anaux et les motifs alaires sont les m\u00eames.
Il est impossible de les confondre avec un autre genre, ni m\u00eame une autre esp\u00e8ce, d’autres Rhyothemis sont sombres, mais leurs ailes sont fen\u00eatr\u00e9es, le plus proche \u00e9tant Rhyothemis princeps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En Australie, il est connu sous le nom de Iridescent flutterer<\/em> et mesure 30 mm avec une envergure de 60 \u00e0 85 mm : un tel d\u00e9s\u00e9quilibre a une explication et si on constate la largeur, \u00e0 la base, de l’aile post\u00e9rieure, on se rend compte qu’il est parfaitement adapt\u00e9 au vol au long cours. On le voit en effet voler inlassablement en groupe, pr\u00e8s de la cime des arbres<\/a>, certainement pour se nourrir d’insectes abondants \u00e0 ce niveau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il se plait sur les rivi\u00e8res et leurs parties calmes (riverine pools<\/em>).
Il est pr\u00e9sent dans le nord des \u00e9tats du Queensland, du Territoire du Nord et de l’Australie-Occidentale.

Si le vent est la phobie des photographes d’insectes, il permet, avec de la chance, de r\u00e9aliser des clich\u00e9s int\u00e9ressants comme celui-ci dessus, ou l’individu, presque \u00e0 l’horizontale, se cramponne \u00e0 son support.
Rhyothemis braganza est s\u00fbrement peu commun, comme le souligne le relativement faible nombre de photos expos\u00e9es sur le Web.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/span><\/strong>
Dans Rhyothemis<\/strong> (Hagen, 1867) on reconnait le nom de la d\u00e9esse de L’Ordre et de la Justice, fr\u00e9quemment utilis\u00e9 encore apr\u00e8s Hagen, pour nommer des Libellulidae, par imitation de ce que faisaient les anciens en utilisant des noms issus de la mythologie. La premi\u00e8re partie du nom vient sans doute, selon Fliedner, d’une roche, la Rhyolite, d\u00e9couverte en 1861 et dont le nom est compos\u00e9 de 2 mots grecs signifiant –couler<\/em> et –pierre<\/em>, cette roche magmatique montrant des bandes ou couches semblant avoir coul\u00e9 les unes sur les autres. Quand on regarde la Rhyolite, cette explication est… surprenante.
Braganza<\/strong> ; la Maison de Bragance est une famille noble qui a longuement r\u00e9gn\u00e9 sur le Portugal et dont une branche a gouvern\u00e9 le Br\u00e9sil. Karsch (2) croyait en effet que le sujet qu’il d\u00e9crivait provenait du Br\u00e9sil, alors qu’il avait \u00e9t\u00e9 captur\u00e9 par Tillyard en Australie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
