Zyxomma elgneri est un Libellulidae de 40 mm. Son abdomen court mesure 29 mm, et n’est pas plus long que son aile post\u00e9rieure, ce qui le diff\u00e9rencie, entre autres, de Zyxomma petiolatum<\/a><\/em> qui montre un tr\u00e8s long abdomen. Un troisi\u00e8me rare Zyxomma est pr\u00e9sent \u00e0 l’extr\u00eame nord du Queensland, on n’en conna\u00eet que les femelles dont l’abdomen est tr\u00e8s fortement \u00e9trangl\u00e9 au niveau du 4\u00b0 segment.
Cet abdomen court et sa propension \u00e0 voler tard en journ\u00e9e lui valent le nom australien de Short-tailed duskdarter<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On peut s’en douter sur mes photos, nous ne l’avons trouv\u00e9 que dans des endroits o\u00f9 l’ombre des arbres est dense ; c’est un odonate cr\u00e9pusculaire qui vole parfois les jours gris. Mais quand ils volent le soir, les Zyxomma sont \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s impossibles \u00e0 identifier.
Et bien s\u00fbr, quand ils se posent, c’est toujours dans des endroits sombres.

Il se pla\u00eet sur les rivi\u00e8res, les ruisseaux, les marais et les mares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On note l’apex des ailes marqu\u00e9 d’une tache brune alors que les femelles exhibent des ailes color\u00e9es de fa\u00e7on diffuse.
Les femelles Zyxomma elgneri, vues de profil, ont \u00e9galement un abdomen rectiligne, celui des m\u00e2les est notablement arqu\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On le trouve en des lieux tr\u00e8s diss\u00e9min\u00e9s, depuis le sud-est de l’Australie, Sydney, jusqu’\u00e0 l’est de l’Australie-Occidentale. Mais il est aussi pr\u00e9sent en Papouasie indon\u00e9sienne, et sans doute en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guin\u00e9e.

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong><\/span>
Zyxomma<\/strong> (1) est compos\u00e9 de 2 mots grecs, le premier signifiant \u2013accoupl\u00e9<\/em>, le second \u2013omma<\/em>\u00a0pour\u00a0\u0153il<\/em>\u00a0(comme dans\u00a0ommatidies<\/a>), ceci se r\u00e9f\u00e9rant \u00e0 ses larges yeux contigus. On lit dans la description originale \u00ab\u00a0T\u00eate grosse, ayant la face tr\u00e8s \u00e9troite, yeux tr\u00e8s d\u00e9velopp\u00e9s comme chez les Aeshna, contigus dans une \u00e9tendue \u00e9gale \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s \u00e0 leur plus grande largeur\u00a0\u00bb. Ce nom de genre a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9 pour l\u2019esp\u00e8ce\u00a0petiolatum<\/em>, seule connue \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque.
Elgneri<\/strong> ; l’esp\u00e8ce est d\u00e9di\u00e9e, selon les dires m\u00eames de Ris, \u00e0 Hermann Elgner qui lui a adress\u00e9 du mat\u00e9riel de valeur depuis le Territoire du Nord et les \u00eeles Aru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
