En Australie, il y a 4 Tramea (Libellulidae), 3 dans les r\u00e9gions que j’ai prospect\u00e9es (Territoire du Nord et nord du Queensland). Tramea Loewii est le plus commun, son nom australien est d’ailleurs Common glider, il mesure environ 45 mm.
Tramea propinqua est extr\u00eamement rare, et n’est sans doute qu’une forme de Tramea transmarina qui pr\u00e9sente des marques alaires allong\u00e9es et \u00e9troites. Tramea stenoloba que nous \u00e9tions susceptibles de rencontrer, ressemble beaucoup \u00e0 Tramea Loewii mais son thorax est vraiment rouge, du m\u00eame rouge que l’abdomen. H\u00e9las, nous ne l’avons pas vu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La tache alaire basale est large, et atteint tout juste le triangle et la boucle anale. Comme pour la plupart des Tramea rouges (il y en a au moins une bleue<\/a>), les veines sont rouges et ressortent magnifiquement sur la tache alaire sombre.
On note la largeur \u00e0 la base de l’aile post\u00e9rieure, soulignant une adaptation au vol plan\u00e9 et donc aux d\u00e9placements au long cours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ci-dessous la posture classique des Tramea; on peut identifier le genre \u00e0… 50 m\u00e8tres, rien que par cette angulation \u00e9tonnante entre le thorax et l’abdomen. Pourquoi adoptent-ils cette posture, je pense que c’est encore un myst\u00e8re, si tant est qu’il y ait une explication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il se pla\u00eet sur une large gamme d’eaux tranquilles, les mares m\u00eame temporaires, les marais, lacs, billabongs et \u00e9tangs.
Il est tr\u00e8s souvent post\u00e9 au sommet d’un rameau et on peut aussi le rencontrer \u00e0 distance de l’eau, chassant dans une prairie, comme ci-dessous \u00e0 droite.
L’esp\u00e8ce est largement distribu\u00e9e en Australie et n’est absente que du quart sud-ouest.
Elle est \u00e9galement pr\u00e9sente en Indon\u00e9sie (Papouasie et \u00eeles de la Sonde), en Micron\u00e9sie, en Nouvelle-Cal\u00e9donie, aux \u00eeles Salomon et depuis 2005 en Nouvelle-Z\u00e9lande.

Je n’ai vu que des femelles en vol, en ponte. Pour photographier la ponte, il faudrait filmer en cadrant moins serr\u00e9, car elle est tout \u00e0 fait particuli\u00e8re\u202f; le couple se d\u00e9place en tandem au-dessus de l’eau, la femelle s’en d\u00e9tache pour frapper l’eau de son abdomen et laisser un ou quelques \u0153ufs, sous la surveillance de son partenaire, et elle remonte pour \u00eatre \u00ab\u00a0r\u00e9cup\u00e9r\u00e9e\u00a0\u00bb par le m\u00e2le. C’est encore un moyen utilis\u00e9 par les m\u00e2les pour s’assurer que les \u0153ufs seront bien f\u00e9cond\u00e9s par leur semence et \u00e9viter que la femelle ne se fasse capturer par un autre m\u00e2le, qui saura \u00e9liminer ou repousser le sperme du m\u00e2le pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enfin, un peu de piquant avec le bec du Gu\u00eapier arc-en-ciel, Merops ornatus. Nous les avons observ\u00e9s durant 3\/4 heure, dans une gorge rocheuse, o\u00f9 nous avons trouv\u00e9 tr\u00e8s peu d’odonates. Il faut se rendre \u00e0 l’\u00e9vidence qu’ils sont bien meilleurs que nous pour les trouver, ce sont d’ailleurs les seuls Tramea que nous verrons ce jour. Il s’agit de deux photos de deux s\u00e9quences diff\u00e9rentes, \u00e0 une demi-heure d’\u00e9cart. Mais ces gu\u00eapiers sont tellement beaux, qu’on ne peut que leur pardonner cette faute de go\u00fbt.
J’\u00e9tais malheureusement loin d’eux, avec mon 150 mm macro et un multiplicateur x1.4, et les photos sont fortement recadr\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans sa version non publi\u00e9e, Hagen avait d\u00e9crit ce genre sous le nom de Trapezostigma<\/em> (1), dont l’\u00e9tymologie est assez \u00e9vidente, de deux mots grecs, l’un signifiant trap\u00e8ze et l’autre tache, se rapportant aux petits pt\u00e9rostigmas en trap\u00e8ze<\/em> du genre. Mais dans la description du genre publi\u00e9e en 1861, Hagen a r\u00e9duit le nom \u00e0 Tramea, ajoutant un jeu de mot avec le latin –trameare<\/em>, qui signifie traverser<\/em>, passer<\/em>, en r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 son comportement vagabond.
Loewii est plus myst\u00e9rieux et on ne sait si c’est pour rendre hommage \u00e0 Friedrich Hermann Loew, entomologiste allemand ou Franz L\u00f6w, physicien et entomologiste autrichien\u202f; aucun lien entre ces deux personnages et Kaup n’a pu \u00eatre \u00e9tablie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
