Synlestes tropicus est un tr\u00e8s grand zygopt\u00e8re de la famille des Synlestidae mesurant 63 mm pour un abdomen de 51 mm.
Sa couleur est \u00e9tonnante, tant pour ses yeux magnifiques, que pour son abdomen d’un jaune que je ne crois pas avoir jamais rencontr\u00e9 sur un zygopt\u00e8re.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comme on le constate sur mes photos, les fonds sont sombres et le flash est n\u00e9cessaire, car ils vivent sur les ruisseaux et rivi\u00e8res de la for\u00eat tropicale humide (rainforest).
Un autre Synlestes, Synlestes selysi, est pr\u00e9sent au Queensland, un peu plus au sud. Il est extr\u00eamement ressemblant et ne s’en distingue que par une dent subapicale (difficile \u00e0 voir sur de bonnes photos) sur les cerco\u00efdes et un pt\u00e9rostigma subtilement<\/em> diff\u00e9rent. La photo ci-dessus, au milieu, me semblait correspondre, pour le pt\u00e9rostigma, au dessin que l’on trouve dans la description originale de Tillyard et non \u00e0 celui de S. tropicus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mais, la disjonction taxonomique mise en \u00e9vidence par G. Theischinger dans une publication de 2021 (2) serait apparemment suffisante pour identifier \u00ab\u00a0\u00e0 la localisation\u00a0\u00bb car il y a un espace biog\u00e9ographique significatif entre les zones de r\u00e9sidence de ces 2 esp\u00e8ces, soit la for\u00eat pluviale du centre du Queensland pour S. selysi et celle des \u00ab\u00a0tropiques humides\u00a0\u00bb du nord Queensland pour S. tropicus. C’est en tout cas l’avis des sp\u00e9cialistes australiens, avis auquel je ne peux que me ranger, car je ne suis pas capable de discuter la biog\u00e9ographie du Queensland et son \u00e9volution depuis 20 ans !
Mais souvenons-nous tout de m\u00eame du cas d’Ischnura graellsii, que l’on pensait bien incapable de franchir l’\u00e9norme obstacle biog\u00e9ographique et climatique que sont les Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es et d\u00e9couvert en France en 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ci-dessus, en examinant mes photos, je ne parviens pas en effet \u00e0 trouver une dent subterminale, mais aucune des photos sur Inaturalist ne parvient \u00e0 la montrer de fa\u00e7on convaincante et on doit donc se baser uniquement sur la localisation pour identifier l’une ou l’autre esp\u00e8ce : sur le plan scientifique, c’est assez d\u00e9sagr\u00e9able, surtout quand on sait que cette r\u00e9gion est soumise \u00e0 des ouragans et que les 2 sites sont s\u00e9par\u00e9s de moins de 100 km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les femelles sont encore plus spectaculaires, avec leur \u00e9norme ovipositeur !
\u00c0 gauche une femelle tr\u00e8s largement mature dont les couleurs ont quelque peu \u00ab\u00a0pass\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb, ce qu’elle rattrape largement par son \u0153il extraordinaire \ud83d\ude0d \u00c0 droite, une femelle bien plus jeune, aux couleurs fra\u00eeches et \u00e0 l’\u0153il encore gris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noter que la femelle, autant que le m\u00e2le, se pose les ailes semi-ouvertes ou les ailes ferm\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous ne l’avons pas observ\u00e9e en ponte, je ne sais donc pas quel est le substrat de pr\u00e9dilection qui aurait pu donner une indication sur la raison de cet \u00e9norme outil de ponte.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Synlestes tropicus, Tropical needle<\/em> pour les australiens, est end\u00e9mique du Queensland et tr\u00e8s limit\u00e9 dans cette aire, le long de la zone c\u00f4ti\u00e8re, au sud et au nord de Cairns, entre Townsville et Cooktown.

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong><\/span>
Synlestes<\/strong> vient du grec –syn<\/em>, signifiant –avec<\/em> et de Lestes cr\u00e9\u00e9 par Leach (1815) qui vient du mot grec \u03bb\u03b7\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03c3 qui signifie voleur ou pirate, tr\u00e8s vraisemblablement en raison de la forme des appendices anaux qui \u00e9voque le coutelas courb\u00e9 des pirates (2). Selys a consid\u00e9r\u00e9 ce nouveau genre suffisamment diff\u00e9rent des autres Lestoidea pour le classer proche des Lestes.
Tropicus<\/strong>, d’un mot grec signifiant –tropical <\/em> souligne sa localisation tropicale, au nord du Tropique du Capricorne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
