Rhyothemis resplendens est un de mes grands regrets de ce s\u00e9jour de prospection au Queensland ; nous ne l’avons aper\u00e7u qu’une seule fois, bri\u00e8vement et de beaucoup trop loin pour en rapporter des photos correctes. Tous les Rhyothemis sont beaux, mais celui-ci est en haut de l’\u00e9chelle ! Ses ailes renvoient la lumi\u00e8re de fa\u00e7on incroyable. Un bleu unique avec des reflets violac\u00e9s bord\u00e9s de noir pour l’aile post\u00e9rieure.
Il n’y a \u00e9videmment pas de confusion possible avec une autre odonate en Australie, m\u00eame avec un des 4 autres Rhyothemis pr\u00e9sents. Nous les avons d’ailleurs tous rencontr\u00e9s. Sur cette zone humide qui fourni des habitats tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rents, for\u00eat mar\u00e9cageuse, ruisseaux et \u00e9tangs, nous avons \u00e9galement contact\u00e9 R. graphitera et R. princeps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rhyothemis resplendens est un tout petit Libellulidae, et je suis m\u00eame surpris, \u00e0 posteriori, de la petite taille que lui donne Selys dans  <\/em>\u00ab\u00a0Odonates de la r\u00e9gion de la Nouvelle Guin\u00e9e\u00a0\u00bb<\/a>, soit 14 \u00e0 16 mm pour l’abdomen, ce qui donnerait un total de 25-26 mm. Il est tr\u00e8s difficile, sur le terrain, d’\u00e9valuer la taille des insectes, on a toujours tendance \u00e0 la surestimer, surtout quand c’est un souvenir marquant.
Mais cette valeur est confirm\u00e9e dans l’Atlas or Living Australia<\/a>, ou on lit aussi que son envergure atteint 40 \u00e0 60 mm, ce qui est \u00e9tonnamment variable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il n’est pas difficile quant \u00e0 son habitat puisqu’il accepte autant les ruisseaux et rivi\u00e8res que les eaux dormantes.
En Australie, on ne le trouve que sur la c\u00f4te est de la moiti\u00e9 nord du Queensland. Mais, le Jewel flutterer, son nom anglais, se rencontre \u00e9galement en Nouvelle-Guin\u00e9e, aux \u00celes Salomon et aux Moluques.

Dans Rhyothemis (Hagen, 1867) on reconnait le nom de la d\u00e9esse de L\u2019Ordre et de la Justice (1), fr\u00e9quemment utilis\u00e9 encore apr\u00e8s Hagen, pour nommer des Libellulidae, par imitation de ce que faisaient les anciens en utilisant des noms issus de la mythologie. La premi\u00e8re partie du nom vient sans doute, selon Fliedner, d\u2019une roche, la Rhyolite, d\u00e9couverte en 1861 et dont le nom est compos\u00e9 de 2 mots grecs signifiant \u2013couler<\/em>\u00a0et \u2013pierre<\/em>, cette roche magmatique montrant des bandes ou couches semblant avoir coul\u00e9 les unes sur les autres. Quand on regarde la Rhyolite, cette explication est surprenante.
Resplendens, du latin –resplendens<\/em>, –brillant<\/em>, et on retrouve le terme fran\u00e7ais, –resplendissant<\/em>. Selys n’explique pas litt\u00e9ralement mais, dans le document d\u00e9j\u00e0 mentionn\u00e9, il \u00e9crit ce qui est ci-dessous : <\/p>\n\n\n\n
