Rhyothemis graphiptera ne fait pas exception parmi les esp\u00e8ces du genre et ses ailes \u00e0 la nervation tr\u00e8s dense sont magnifiquement color\u00e9es, avec des reflets m\u00e9talliques sur les parties sombres quand le soleil joue avec. Le thorax et l’abdomen sont \u00e9galement vert m\u00e9tallique.
Il est commun en Australie et nous l’avons rencontr\u00e9 dans le Territoire du Nord, en Australie-Occidentale et dans le nord du Queensland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En raison des motifs alaires, il est impossible de le confondre avec un autre Libellulidae australien : seul Rhyothemis phyllis s’en approche un peu, avec une coloration alaire nettement plus limit\u00e9e.
Pour sa taille, il est difficile de se r\u00e9f\u00e9rer \u00e0 Rambur (2), qui organise un jeu de piste dans son ouvrage ; il nous dit qu’il (Libellula graphiptera) est de la m\u00eame taille que Libellula ferruginea<\/em> (Crocothemis erythraea). Mais pour ce dernier, il \u00e9crit qu’il est un peu plus grand que Libellula vulgata<\/em> (Sympetrum vulgatum). \u00c0 la rubrique Libellula vulgata<\/em>, Rambur donne enfin un chiffre, 4 cm \u00e0 4 cm et demi.
C’est en fait un peu exag\u00e9r\u00e9, car le Graphic flutterer<\/em> ne mesure r\u00e9ellement que 35 mm pour une envergure de 70 mm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il se plait sur les mares, lacs, mar\u00e9cages et les parties tr\u00e8s lentes des rivi\u00e8res. On l’aper\u00e7oit tr\u00e8s souvent en vol, haut entre les arbres, se nourrissant longuement en compagnie d’autres individus de son esp\u00e8ce. Leurs larges ailes post\u00e9rieures sont bien adapt\u00e9es aux vols de longue dur\u00e9e et au vol plan\u00e9, aux alternances de vol battu et plan\u00e9 qui leur donne un air de papillon, d’o\u00f9 le qualificatif de flutterer<\/em> en anglais.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En Australie, il occupe toutes les r\u00e9gions c\u00f4ti\u00e8res du nord, depuis l’Australie-Occidentale jusqu’au Queensland. Mais il est \u00e9galement pr\u00e9sent sur toute la c\u00f4te est, jusqu’au sud de la Nouvelle-Galles-du-Sud.


En dehors de l’Australie, on le rencontre en Nouvelle-Cal\u00e9donie, dans les iles de la Sonde, les Moluques et la Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guin\u00e9e.

Les femelles, et c’est peu fr\u00e9quent pour les Libellulidae, pr\u00e9sentent les m\u00eames motifs alaires et, ce qui est encore plus rare, avec la m\u00eame intensit\u00e9 de coloration. Les yeux, le thorax et l’abdomen (un peu plus large) sont copies conformes de ceux du m\u00e2le.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans Rhyothemis<\/em> (Hagen, 1867) on reconnait le nom de la d\u00e9esse de L\u2019Ordre et de la Justice (1), Themis, fr\u00e9quemment utilis\u00e9 encore apr\u00e8s Hagen, pour nommer des Libellulidae, par imitation de ce que faisaient les anciens en utilisant des noms issus de la mythologie. La premi\u00e8re partie du nom vient sans doute, selon Fliedner, d\u2019une roche, la Rhyolite, d\u00e9couverte en 1861 et dont le nom est compos\u00e9 de 2 mots grecs signifiant \u2013couler<\/em> et \u2013pierre<\/em>, cette roche magmatique montrant des bandes ou couches semblant avoir coul\u00e9 les unes sur les autres. Quand on regarde la Rhyolite, cette explication est surprenante.
Graphiptera<\/em>, dont la premi\u00e8re partie est issue du grec et signifie –dessin ou peinture<\/em> (graphisme) et la seconde, du grec \u00e9galement, signifiant –ail\u00e9<\/em>. Ceci pour souligner le caract\u00e8re \u00ab\u00a0graphique\u00a0\u00bb (sens moderne !) des ailes, qui est naturellement mis en \u00e9vidence dans la description de Rambur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
