Neurothemis stigmatizans a \u00e9t\u00e9 le premier odonate d\u00e9crit en Australie et ce n’est pas \u00e9tonnant en raison du nombre tr\u00e8s important d’individu que l’on rencontre dans le nord, tant dans le Territoire du Nord qu’au Queensland.
Il est spectaculaire par sa coloration alaire et, comme pour tous les Neurothemis par la densit\u00e9 de sa nervation.
M\u00e2le et mature, il est impossible, en Australie, de le confondre avec un autre odonate.
Noter ses pt\u00e9rostigmas roses qui rappellent ceux de Sympetrum pedemontanum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Son abdomen est beaucoup plus court que son envergure ; 40 mm contre 60 \u00e0 85 mm.
Il se pla\u00eet sur les eaux dormantes de toutes sortes, mais on le rencontre \u00e9galement \u00e0 distance de l’eau, dans des endroits inattendus, o\u00f9 il est souvent le seul odonate pr\u00e9sent.
On note bien s\u00fbr les pt\u00e9rostigmas roses, une couleur peu commune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Immature, le Painted Grasshawk<\/em> est \u00e9galement spendide, surtout quand l’incidence de la lumi\u00e8re faire ressortir la couleur claire de sa nervation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Si les femelles montrent les m\u00eames motifs thoraciques que les m\u00e2les, la coloration alaire est bien diff\u00e9rente ; les ailes portent une suffusion ambr\u00e9e qui s’accentue en p\u00e9riph\u00e9rie. Apr\u00e8s une zone hyaline, l’apex est alors fortement color\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En Australie, l’esp\u00e8ce est distribu\u00e9e sur la r\u00e9gion c\u00f4ti\u00e8re depuis Broome en Australie-Occidentale jusqu’\u00e0 la moiti\u00e9 nord du Queensland.
Elle serait pr\u00e9sente en Nouvelle-Guin\u00e9e, o\u00f9 l’on trouve plut\u00f4t la sous-esp\u00e8ce Neurothemis stigmatizans bramina, comme aux \u00eeles Salomon, au Vanuatu et aux Moluques.

Neurothemis (1), du grec neuro pour \u2013nerf <\/em>ou plut\u00f4t \u2013nervure des ailes<\/em> en entomologie, et de Themis \u2013 d\u00e9esse grecque de l\u2019ordre et de la justice, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9 de nombreuses fois depuis Hagen (1861). Le nom de la d\u00e9esse de l\u2019ordre est particuli\u00e8rement bien adapt\u00e9 \u00e0 la taxonomie, science qui vise \u00e0 d\u00e9crire et ordonner les familles, genres et esp\u00e8ces. Brauer a cr\u00e9\u00e9 ce nom de genre en 1867 pour remplacer le genre Polyneura, cr\u00e9\u00e9 par Rambur en 1842, car ce dernier \u00e9tait d\u00e9j\u00e0 utilis\u00e9 chez les H\u00e9mipt\u00e8res. Ce nom de genre \u00e9tait destin\u00e9 \u00e0 insister sur le grand nombre de cellules de leurs ailes.
Stigmatizans, du latin -stigmatizo signifie marqu\u00e9 avec une tache<\/em> et se r\u00e9f\u00e8re, selon ce que je lis sur le livre de Ian Endersby, \u00e0 la bordure blanche du pt\u00e9rostigma ou \u00e0 la nervure costale qui fait bien s\u00fbr la marge ant\u00e9rieure du pt\u00e9rostigma ; mais que ce soit l’un ou l’autre (la terminologie \u00e0 l’\u00e9poque de Fabricius, en latin, \u00e9tait bien diff\u00e9rente), cela n’a pas de sens pour moi…<\/p>\n\n\n\n
