Orthetrum caledonicum est un des Libellulidae les plus communs d’Australie et on est susceptible de le rencontrer \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s partout dans les espaces ouverts, sous r\u00e9serve bien s\u00fbr de ne pas \u00eatre dans une zone d\u00e9sertique, ce qui occupe une large partie de l’outback australien.
C’est un Orthetrum typique, \u00e0 l’abdomen effil\u00e9 ou tr\u00e8s effil\u00e9, aux ailes tr\u00e8s discr\u00e8tement ambr\u00e9es ou fortement color\u00e9es, ce que je trouve \u00e0 la fois normal et vraiment \u00e9tonnant, quand on regarde l’immensit\u00e9 de son aire de distribution.
Il mesure 45 mm de longueur totale et on ne peut le confondre en Australie qu’avec son rare cousin Orthetrum balteatum, un peu plus petit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A maturit\u00e9, les m\u00e2les des 2 esp\u00e8ces sont compl\u00e8tement bleus avec les derniers segments noirs, mais on note une diff\u00e9rence constante, la coloration ambr\u00e9e, l\u00e9g\u00e8re ou tr\u00e8s marqu\u00e9e que porte notre Blue skimmer entre le nodus et le pt\u00e9rostigma.
De plus, la face de O. balteatum est blanche, plus ou moins barr\u00e9e de noir (il y a tr\u00e8s peu de photos disponibles !), celle de Orthetrum caledonicum est uniform\u00e9ment blanch\u00e2tre pour \u00eatre poli, blanc sale si je ne craignais de le vexer \ud83d\ude42 .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noter sur toutes ces photos, sur les sujets matures, comme la nervure costale, dans sa partie postnodale est claire.
En portant attention \u00e0 l’aile post\u00e9rieure droite du sujet de gauche ci-dessus (plus difficile sur l’ant\u00e9rieure) on remarque la pr\u00e9sence de dipt\u00e8res parasites<\/a>, certainement du genre Forcipomyia, un Ceratopogonidae, qui se nourrit de l’h\u00e9molymphe<\/a> de son h\u00f4te.
On le trouve dans des aires ouvertes sur les eaux stagnantes ou faiblement courantes, des mares temporaires aux grands lacs, en passant par les foss\u00e9s et les ruisseaux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il est pr\u00e9sent dans tous les \u00e9tats australiens (m\u00eame en Tasmanie), en particulier sur les c\u00f4tes, et il est particuli\u00e8rement abondant dans le sud-est du pays, alors qu’il est tout de m\u00eame absent au centre de la c\u00f4te sud.
On rencontre \u00e9galement le Blue skimmer<\/em> dans les Petites iles de la Sonde (Indon\u00e9sie), au Vanuatu, en Nouvelle-Guin\u00e9e et bien s\u00fbr en Nouvelle-Cal\u00e9donie.

Un dernier m\u00e2le, pas tout \u00e0 fait mature, en tout cas en ce qui concerne la coloration ; le jaune de sa jeunesse n’est pas encore totalement cach\u00e9 par la pruine bleue qui l’envahit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les femelles Orthetrum caledonicum, comme les jeunes m\u00e2les, sont d’abord jaunes, tout \u00e0 fait conformes \u00e0 nombre d’Orthetrum \u00e0 travers l’Europe ou l’Asie, comme notre O. cancellatum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mais lorsqu’elles prennent de l’\u00e2ge, elles tentent de ressembler aux m\u00e2les, en se couvrant partiellement de pruinosit\u00e9 sur l’abdomen ; elles ne deviennent jamais compl\u00e8tement bleues d’apr\u00e8s mes recherches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong>
Orthetrum<\/strong> (1) vient de 2 mots grecs,\u00a0orthos<\/em>\u00a0signifiant \u00ab\u00a0droit<\/em>\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0et\u00a0etron<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0abdomen<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00bb , ceci pour signifier que les c\u00f4t\u00e9s de l\u2019abdomen sont parall\u00e8les. Ce nom de genre cr\u00e9\u00e9 par Newman en 1833 a perdu sa pertinence avec la d\u00e9couverte de nouvelles esp\u00e8ces, mais le nom est rest\u00e9.
Caledonicum<\/strong> se r\u00e9f\u00e8re bien s\u00fbr \u00e0 la Nouvelle-Cal\u00e9donie dont est issu le sujet d\u00e9crit par Brauer<\/a> (en latin) : \u00ab\u00a0Patria: Nova Caledonia. Mai.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ci-dessous cette jeune femelle n’a sans doute pas ma\u00eetris\u00e9 assez attentivement son vol, et m\u00eame si elle a partiellement d\u00e9truit la toile qui la retient prisonni\u00e8re, elle va faire le repas d’une Argiope radon, en attente \u00e0 une quinzaine de centim\u00e8tres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
