En d\u00e9cembre 2025, on apprend que deux esp\u00e8ces communes et spectaculaires, d\u00e9crites depuis plus de 250\u00a0ans, sont en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 la m\u00eame esp\u00e8ce\u00a0; des analyses g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques (2) ont en effet montr\u00e9 que Rhyothemis phyllis est un synonyme junior de Rhyothemis variegata<\/a><\/span> ! Ceci signifie que comme R. variegata (Linnaeus, 1763)\u00a0 a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9crit le premier, son nom conserve la pr\u00e9s\u00e9ance.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heureusement, j’avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 rencontr\u00e9 Rhyothemis phyllis \u00e0 deux reprises en Asie, car, en tout cas dans le Territoire du Nord, je n’ai pas eu de chance. Syst\u00e9matiquement, mon approche d\u00e9clenchait son envol et j’ai d\u00fb me r\u00e9soudre \u00e0 faire des photos en vol, immontrables\u2026 Mes compagnons de voyage se sont gentiment moqu\u00e9s de moi, et j’avais le droit \u00e0 un appel, d\u00e8s que l’un d’eux apercevait l’esp\u00e8ce, m\u00eame au loin\u2026
Comme tous les Rhyothemis, c’est une esp\u00e8ce spectaculaire par sa d\u00e9coration alaire, qu’on pourrait confondre avec Rhyothemis variegata, \u00e0 la coloration plus \u00e9tendue, si elle \u00e9tait pr\u00e9sente en Australie. Rhyothemis graphiptera<\/a>, assez commune en Australie, est aussi beaucoup plus color\u00e9e.
Sur la photo ci-dessus, on note la largeur de ses ailes post\u00e9rieures, et ce n’est donc pas un hasard si on le voit se nourrir tr\u00e8s longuement en vol, parfois en essaim<\/em>, \u00e0 plusieurs m\u00e8tres au-dessus du sol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il mesure 39 \u00e0 41 mm avec une envergure de 70 mm.
On le rencontre sur les eaux stagnantes bien v\u00e9g\u00e9talis\u00e9es, mares, \u00e9tangs, marais et foss\u00e9s.

En Australie, on ne rencontre pas l’esp\u00e8ce nominale, Rhyothemis phyllis phyllis, mais R. p. beatrix et R. p. chloe qui diff\u00e8rent par l’\u00e9tendue des taches alaires, en particulier au niveau du nodus.

Nous l’avons peu rencontr\u00e9, que ce soit dans le Territoire du Nord ou dans le nord du Queensland. S’il y est pr\u00e9sent, il est beaucoup moins abondant que sur la r\u00e9gion c\u00f4ti\u00e8re est, jusqu’\u00e0 Newcastle, Nouvelle-Galles du Sud.
En dehors de l’Australie, on le contacte \u00e0 travers les \u00eeles du Pacifique, du Laos, du Cambodge et du Myanmar jusqu’en Chine, et \u00e0 Ta\u00efwan.

En Asie ou en Australie, il prend le nom de Yellow-stripped flutterer ou Yellow-barred flutterer. Si la premi\u00e8re partie se r\u00e9f\u00e8re \u00e0 la large tache alaire basale noire travers\u00e9e de jaune, la seconde traduit sa fa\u00e7on de voler, alternant vol battu et plan\u00e9, \u00e0 la fa\u00e7on d’un papillon.
Au Cambodge<\/a>. En Malaisie<\/a>.

Malgr\u00e9 sa pauvre qualit\u00e9, je livre une photo de femelle pour compl\u00e9ter le tableau ; elles sont identiques quant au motif alaire et il faut se r\u00e9f\u00e9rer aux appendices anaux pour d\u00e9terminer le sexe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong>
Dans Rhyothemis<\/strong><\/em> (Hagen, 1867) on reconnait le nom de la d\u00e9esse de L\u2019Ordre et de la Justice (1), Themis, fr\u00e9quemment utilis\u00e9 encore apr\u00e8s Hagen, pour nommer des Libellulidae, par imitation de ce que faisaient les anciens en utilisant des noms issus de la mythologie. La premi\u00e8re partie du nom vient sans doute, selon Fliedner, d\u2019une roche, la Rhyolite, d\u00e9couverte en 1861 et dont le nom est compos\u00e9 de 2 mots grecs signifiant \u2013couler<\/em> et \u2013pierre<\/em>, cette roche magmatique montrant des bandes ou couches semblant avoir coul\u00e9 les unes sur les autres. Quand on regarde la Rhyolite, cette explication est surprenante.
Phyllis<\/strong> est une princesse Thrace dont le destin est vari\u00e9 en fonction des versions ; il ne faut pas voir de rapport avec son (tragique) destin, seulement, encore une fois, l’attrait pour la mythologie \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
