Rhyothemis princeps, comme tous les odonates de ce genre, pr\u00e9sente des ailes spectaculairement color\u00e9es avec des espaces hyalins pairs sur chaque aile. Les Australiens le nomment Sapphire flutterer<\/em> en raison des reflets iris\u00e9s bleut\u00e9s qui s’\u00e9chappent de sa voilure au soleil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On remarque la largeur de l’aile post\u00e9rieure, qui permet aux odonates de ce genre de rester longuement en l’air, notamment pour se nourrir, souvent assez haut entre les arbres.
Si on se fie \u00e0 W. F. Kirby, il mesure de 28 \u00e0 32 mm pour une envergure de 52 \u00e0 64 mm.
On le rencontre sur une grande vari\u00e9t\u00e9 d’eaux stagnantes, lacs, mares et marais.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il n’est certainement pas rare et nous l’avons rencontr\u00e9 sur 6 sites diff\u00e9rents au Queensland, mais toujours assez difficile \u00e0 approcher.
En Australie, il est limit\u00e9 au nord du Queensland, depuis Mackay jusqu’au Cap York. Sa distribution se poursuit au-del\u00e0 en Nouvelle-Guin\u00e9e, o\u00f9 il semble pr\u00e9senter des motifs alaires un peu diff\u00e9rents (forme ir\u00e8ne<\/em> par exemple).

Ci-dessous, je montre la seule femelle contact\u00e9e, hors accouplement (dont j’ai fait une photo dans un enchev\u00eatrement de v\u00e9g\u00e9taux). Elle se diff\u00e9rencie du m\u00e2le par l’apex des ailes variablement hyalins et une irisation beaucoup plus discr\u00e8te. En effet, l’autre femelle contact\u00e9e lors d’un accouplement ne montre de zone hyaline qu’\u00e0 l’aile ant\u00e9rieure (infime \u00e0 la post\u00e9rieure).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans Rhyothemis<\/em> (Hagen, 1867) on reconnait le nom de la d\u00e9esse de L\u2019Ordre et de la Justice (1), Themis, fr\u00e9quemment utilis\u00e9 encore apr\u00e8s Hagen, pour nommer des Libellulidae, par imitation de ce que faisaient les anciens en utilisant des noms issus de la mythologie. La premi\u00e8re partie du nom vient sans doute, selon Fliedner, d\u2019une roche, la Rhyolite, d\u00e9couverte en 1861 et dont le nom est compos\u00e9 de 2 mots grecs signifiant \u2013couler<\/em> et \u2013pierre<\/em>, cette roche magmatique montrant des bandes ou couches semblant avoir coul\u00e9 les unes sur les autres. Quand on regarde la Rhyolite, cette explication est surprenante.
Princeps<\/em> vient du latin princeps<\/em> et signifie –chef<\/em> ou –celui qui arrive en premier<\/em>, mais aussi –prince<\/em>. Or Kirby, dans \u00ab\u00a0The Annals and magazine of natural history; zoology, botany, and geology : On a small collection of Odonata (dragonflies) from Queensland, with descriptions of five new species<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb d\u00e9crit 3 nouveaux Rhyothemis, et pr\u00e9cise pour R. princeps qu’il est probablement alli\u00e9 \u00e0 R. regia<\/em> et chalcoptilon<\/em>. Or regia<\/em> vient du latin regius<\/em> et signifie royal<\/em>, le prince serait ainsi alli\u00e9 au roi…<\/p>\n\n\n\n
