Lestoidea brevicauda n’a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9crit qu’en 1996, c’est une raret\u00e9. M\u00e2les et femelles sont difficiles \u00e0 s\u00e9parer de leur cousin L. conjuncta. Ces photos sont donc pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es avec les r\u00e9serves d’usage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La photo ci-contre repr\u00e9sente les appendices anaux du sujet ci-dessus.

L’identification des m\u00e2les se fait sur la longueur des appendices anaux inf\u00e9rieurs (clic sur image<\/em>).
Ils sont courts pour L. brevicauda (comme son long l’indique), plus longs, plus visibles, plus ac\u00e9r\u00e9s pour L. conjuncta pour lequel ils sont \u00e9galement plus rapproch\u00e9s \u00e0 leur insertion.
On trouve ici<\/a>, publi\u00e9 dans \u00ab\u00a0The species of Lestoideinae M\u00dcNZ (Insecta: Odonata: Zygoptera: Lestoideidae<\/em>)\u00a0\u00bb, G. Theischinger, un dessin des appendices anaux des 2 esp\u00e8ces que nous avons rencontr\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

C’est une petite esp\u00e8ce, comme L. conjuncta, il mesure environ 35 mm. Les 2 autres esp\u00e8ces L. lewisiana et barbarae sont plus grandes.
Son nom anglais est Short-tipped bluestreak. Si on comprend facilement que le short-tipped se rapporte aux appendices anaux inf\u00e9rieurs, le bluestreak est \u00e9tonnant et se rapporte \u00e0 la coloration bleue des immatures ; il est assez inhabituel d’utiliser les caract\u00e9ristiques de sujets non matures pour donner un nom moderne. C’\u00e9tait plus commun dans les premiers temps<\/em> de l’odonatologie ou les descripteurs travaillaient sur des exemplaires de collection, sans savoir si les sujets \u00e9taient matures ou immatures. Un bon exemple est notre Libellula fulva, francis\u00e9e en Libellule fauve, le fauve \u00e9tant la couleur des immatures.

Pour les femelles, il faut se fier au pronotum et dans le m\u00eame document de G. Theischinger, on trouve un dessin<\/a> comparant celui des 2 esp\u00e8ces proches. Celui de la femelle Lestoidea brevicauda est arrondi ; m\u00eame sur de bonnes photos rapproch\u00e9es, qu’il soit arrondi, ou que cet arrondi soit bris\u00e9 en son centre reste tr\u00e8s difficile \u00e0 appr\u00e9cier…
Il faut donc garder \u00e0 l’esprit que l’identification n’est pas absolument certaine.

Je suis cependant tr\u00e8s confiant pour cette premi\u00e8re photo. J’ai pris involontairement une image presque exactement sous le m\u00eame angle que celle que j’ai trouv\u00e9e par hasard, sur le Web, dans la 2\u00b0 \u00e9dition (2021) du \u00ab\u00a0The Complete Field Guide To Dragonflies of Australia\u00a0\u00bb par C. Theischinger et J. Hawking (je n’ai que la version de 2006). Celle-ci est bleue, mais semble bien mature ; elle deviendra sans doute jaune terne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

J’ai donc r\u00e9alis\u00e9 un montage collant ma photo de la femelle pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de celle du guide, et on peut constater la totale similarit\u00e9, en particulier du pronotum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lestoidea brevicauda habite les ruisseaux et petites rivi\u00e8res de la for\u00eat pluviale.
Sa distribution est tr\u00e8s limit\u00e9e, il est end\u00e9mique du nord-est du Queensland, de Townsville au sud jusqu’\u00e0 Cooktown au nord.

Ci-dessous une autre femelle au pronotum bien arrondi, noter les taches jaunes sur le vertex qui s\u00e9pare L. brevicauda et conjuncta des 2 autres esp\u00e8ces du genre (non contact\u00e9es).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong>
Lestoidea<\/strong> (1) est compos\u00e9 de Lestes <\/em>et de o\u00efdes<\/em>, ce dernier utilis\u00e9 comme suffixe, signifie apparence<\/em>, aspect<\/em>, pour indiquer que ce nouveau genre ressemble aux Lestes, ce que pr\u00e9cise Tillyard : \u00ab\u00a0Caract\u00e8res interm\u00e9diaires entre ceux des l\u00e9gions des Lestes et des Protoneura\u00a0\u00bb.
Lestes<\/em>\u00a0(Leach, 1815), apparemment d\u2019un mot grec signifiant voleur ou pirate, sans qu\u2019on puisse expliquer la raison de ce choix \u00e9tonnant.
[Je me permets une hypoth\u00e8se, sans doute ridicule aux yeux des linguistes, mais au moins charg\u00e9e de sens ; pourquoi ne se serait-il pas directement inspir\u00e9 du fran\u00e7ais leste, \u00ab\u00a0qui se meut avec agilit\u00e9 et aisance\u00a0\u00bb nous dit le Larousse. William Leach, entomologiste, entre autres, avait s\u00e9journ\u00e9 en France, connaissait bien le fran\u00e7ais, le lisait et avait tiss\u00e9 des liens assez \u00e9troits avec cette langue puisqu’en d\u00e9pit de la guerre, il lisait les textes fran\u00e7ais, communiquait avec ses coll\u00e8gues fran\u00e7ais et s’en inspirait fortement.
Et que nos Lestes se meuvent avec facilit\u00e9 et l\u00e9g\u00e8ret\u00e9 dans les mouvements est une \u00e9vidence \ud83d\ude42<\/em>
Cette hypoth\u00e8se est r\u00e9fut\u00e9e par ce qui suit…]
Lestes a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9 par Leach (1815) et vient du mot grec \u03bb\u03b7\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03c3 qui signifie voleur ou pirate, tr\u00e8s vraisemblablement en raison de la forme des appendices anaux qui \u00e9voque le coutelas courb\u00e9 des pirates. Il est tr\u00e8s int\u00e9ressant de lire \u00e0 ce sujet l\u2019analyse, sans doute d\u00e9finitive, faite par Matti H\u00e4m\u00e4l\u00e4inen & Heinrich Fliedner (2).

Brevicauda<\/strong>, du latin brevis<\/em> pour court et cauda<\/em> pour queue, ce qui se r\u00e9f\u00e8re aux courts appendices anaux inf\u00e9rieurs du m\u00e2le.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
