Erythemis carmelita est un des nombreux odonates que nous avons rencontr\u00e9s sur les rives du magnifique lac Tabano<\/a>. D’ailleurs, il n’y avait pas que des libellules, mais aussi de nombreux oiseaux et un alligator<\/a> qui a provoqu\u00e9 le repli de ceux qui s’\u00e9taient aventur\u00e9s dans l’eau pour se rapprocher de leurs cibles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il mesure 31 mm pour l’abdomen, c’est ce que nous dit Williamson dans \u00ab\u00a0Notes on the Genus Erythemis With a Description of a New Species (Odonata)\u00a0\u00bb, ce qui donne une longueur totale de 48 mm.
Il est presque enti\u00e8rement rouge avec une large tache alaire basale ambr\u00e9e et ne peut \u00eatre confondu qu’avec Erythemis mithroides<\/a>, tout rouge \u00e9galement, dont les marques \u00e0 la base des ailes sont beaucoup plus sombres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ce sera notre seule rencontre avec cette esp\u00e8ce et nous ne verrons pas de femelle. C’est une nouvelle esp\u00e8ce pour moi, la huiti\u00e8me dans le genre Erythemis qui en comporte dix.
C’est une esp\u00e8ce que l’on rencontre pr\u00e8s des zones humides, des mar\u00e9cages, des mares ou des \u00e9tangs. Elle est peu commune.
On la rencontre au nord du Br\u00e9sil, au P\u00e9rou, en Colombie, au Venezuela et il y a m\u00eame une donn\u00e9e exceptionnelle au Panama.

Noter les pt\u00e9rostigmas clairs \u00e0 forte marge noire, et les pattes qui portent aussi quelques traces de noir.
Je suppose que l’araign\u00e9e doit regretter de se trouver du mauvais c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la feuille et contempler, avec regrets, par transparence, ce potentiel repas…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Erythemis<\/strong> (Hagen, 1861) (1) du grec e\u030drythr\u00f3s<\/em>, rouge et de Themis. Il faut supposer que si Hagen a choisi Themis, \u2013 d\u00e9esse grecque de l\u2019ordre et de la justice, c’est \u00e0 la fois pour respecter la \u00ab\u00a0mode\u00a0\u00bb qui consistait \u00e0 donner un nom en rapport avec la mythologie, tr\u00e8s en vogue \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque, et parce qu’elle est particuli\u00e8rement bien adapt\u00e9e \u00e0 la taxonomie, science qui vise \u00e0 d\u00e9crire et ordonner et classer les familles, genres et esp\u00e8ces. Quant au qualificatif \u00ab\u00a0rouge\u00a0\u00bb, il s’explique par le fait que Hagen a inclus dans ce nouveau genre trois esp\u00e8ces dont l’abdomen des m\u00e2les est rouge ou ferrugineux.
Williamson explique lui-m\u00eame le nom qu’il a donn\u00e9 \u00e0 cette esp\u00e8ce : \u00ab\u00a0Named in honor of Mrs. M. A. Carriker, Jr. (n\u00e9e Carmelita<\/strong> Flye), whose courage and industry as a member of Mr. Carriker’s expeditions in the Americain tropics merit recognition. \u00ab\u00a0Nomm\u00e9 en l’honneur de Mrs. M. A. Carriker, Jr. (n\u00e9e Carmelita<\/strong> Flye) dont le courage et l’engagement, en tant que membre des exp\u00e9ditions Carriker dans les tropiques am\u00e9ricains, m\u00e9ritent reconnaissance<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0.

En am\u00e9ricain, elle prend le nom de Carmelita pondhawk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
