C’est la premi\u00e8re fois que je vois Miathyria marcella pos\u00e9 ; c’est en effet un planeur infatigable que j’avais rencontr\u00e9\u00a0au Panama<\/a>, apr\u00e8s sa capture. Malheureusement, il est pos\u00e9 ici tr\u00e8s haut, certainement \u00e0 plus de 5 m\u00e8tres, ce qui n’est pas son habitude, mais il est d\u00e9j\u00e0 17 heures 15 et c’est sans doute son perchoir pour la nuit. Ils sont d’ailleurs 4 ou 5 individus dans cet arbre-dortoir, ce 6 janvier 2015, pr\u00e8s de REGUA. C’est une esp\u00e8ce gr\u00e9gaire et on peut parfois observer des vols de dizaines d’individus.
Ils semblent rester en vol des heures, c’est du moins ce que pensent les photographes…, et cette facult\u00e9 est bien s\u00fbr directement li\u00e9e \u00e0 la spectaculaire largeur des ailes post\u00e9rieures qui portent une tache tr\u00e8s sombre \u00e0 nervures jaunes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Son nom anglais est Hyacinth Glider et t\u00e9moigne de sa d\u00e9pendance aux Jacinthes d’eau (Eicchornia crassipes) qui constituent son substrat pr\u00e9f\u00e9rentiel de ponte. Les femelles que je n’ai pas rencontr\u00e9es ne d\u00e9daignent pas non plus la Laitue d’eau (Pistia stratiotes<\/em>).
Ces choix font qu’on ne le trouve que sur des eaux dormantes ou \u00e0 tr\u00e8s faible courant, mare, marais \u00e9tangs et lacs.
On le rencontre depuis le sud des \u00c9tats-Unis jusqu’en l’Argentine et aux Grandes Antilles.
IUCN Red List<\/a>

Il mesure 37 \u00e0 40 mm, l’accouplement se produit en vol et la vile larvaire dure 4 \u00e0 6 mois.
Avec sa tache basale alaire, on ne peut gu\u00e8re le confondre qu’avec Tramea calverti<\/a> ou Tramea cophysa<\/a>, seuls Tramea montrant une bande claire lat\u00e9rale sur la face lat\u00e9rale du thorax. Mais ils ont tous les deux un abdomen plus rouge et leur tache basale alaire n’est pas parcourue de nervures jaunes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parmi les individus observ\u00e9s sur cet arbre, celui ci-dessus \u00e9tait spectaculairement charg\u00e9 en parasites, certainement des hydracariens, qui se fixent sur la larve et migrent sur leur h\u00f4te lors de l’\u00e9mergence.

Je livre l’\u00e9tymologie du nom d’esp\u00e8ce et de genre telle qu’on les trouve dans \u00ab\u00a0The Scientific Names of North American Dragonflies\u00a0\u00bb, Heinrich Fliedner, Ian Endersby, Busybird Publishing 2019<\/em>.
Miathyria est compos\u00e9 de trois mots grecs, le premier signifiant –une<\/em>, le second –entr\u00e9e, porte ou volet de fen\u00eatre<\/em>, le troisi\u00e8me, –concernant, se rapportant \u00e0<\/em>. Et \u00ab\u00a0ce qui se rapporterait \u00e0 une entr\u00e9e ou un volet\u00a0\u00bb pourrait \u00eatre \u00a0\u00bb l’espace du sous-triangle sous la forme d’une tr\u00e8s large cellule pentagonale\u00a0\u00bb.
L’esp\u00e8ce marcella<\/em> est nomm\u00e9e d’apr\u00e8s une femme inconnue ou une sainte du IV\u00b0 si\u00e8cle connue pour son r\u00f4le dans la fondation de l’institution monastique…
