J’avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 rencontr\u00e9 Erythemis attala en Colombie<\/a>, mais je n’y avais vu qu’une femelle. Et les m\u00e2les, presque enti\u00e8rement noirs, sont bien diff\u00e9rents ; seuls les yeux sont plus marron que noirs, et ses appendices anaux sont clairs ou blanch\u00e2tres.
Il est tellement noir qu’on ne peut le confondre qu’avec Erythrodiplax funerera<\/a> dont la tache basale est beaucoup plus importante, ou Erythemis plebeja<\/a>, \u00e0 l’abdomen beaucoup plus mince et dont la tache alaire est r\u00e9duite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il mesure environ 42 mm et se pla\u00eet sur les plans d’eau forestiers tr\u00e8s v\u00e9g\u00e9talis\u00e9s, parfois compl\u00e8tement couverts de v\u00e9g\u00e9tation aquatique, comme des de laitues d’eau.
Les Am\u00e9ricains le nomment Black Pondhawk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Son aire de distribution est tr\u00e8s importante, depuis le Texas jusqu’en Argentine, \u00e0 travers les Grandes Antilles et toute l’Am\u00e9rique du Sud.
Il n’est nulle part menac\u00e9 ; notons que son aire de r\u00e9partition sur L’IUCN Red List<\/a> n’est pas \u00e0 jour.

Il est sans doute assez commun vu le nombre d’observations sur Inaturalist et il est \u00e9tonnant que je ne l’ai pas rencontr\u00e9 plus souvent…

Certains m\u00e2les peuvent montrer des taches brunes sur S7 (Br\u00e9sil) ou m\u00eame sur S4 et S7 (au Panama) ; \u00e0 moins qu’il ne s’agisse d’autres esp\u00e8ces…

Les femelles sont beaucoup moins sombres, mais pas vraiment plus gaies… Elles portent, comme certains m\u00e2les du Panama, de larges bandes claires sur S4 et S7. Ces m\u00e2les et femelles ont \u00e9t\u00e9 observ\u00e9s \u00e0 tr\u00e8s courte distance du lac Tabano, un grand \u00e9tang entour\u00e9 par la for\u00eat pluviale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Erythemis<\/strong>\u00a0(Hagen, 1861) (1) du grec\u00a0e\u030drythr\u00f3s<\/em>, rouge et de Themis. Il faut supposer que si Hagen a choisi Themis, \u2013 d\u00e9esse grecque de l\u2019ordre et de la justice, c\u2019est \u00e0 la fois pour respecter la \u00ab\u00a0mode\u00a0\u00bb qui consistait \u00e0 donner un nom en rapport avec la mythologie, tr\u00e8s en vogue \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque, et parce qu\u2019elle est particuli\u00e8rement bien adapt\u00e9e \u00e0 la taxonomie, science qui vise \u00e0 d\u00e9crire et ordonner et classer les familles, genres et esp\u00e8ces. Quant au qualificatif \u00ab\u00a0rouge\u00a0\u00bb, il s\u2019explique par le fait que Hagen a inclus dans ce nouveau genre trois esp\u00e8ces dont l\u2019abdomen des m\u00e2les est rouge ou ferrugineux.
Attala<\/strong> pourrait venir du nom d’un saint mort \u00e0 Strasbourg en 741. Mais je pr\u00e9f\u00e8re nettement l’autre hypoth\u00e8se fournit par Ian Endersby (1). Il viendrait du nom de l’h\u00e9ro\u00efne indienne du roman \u00e9ponyme de Chateaubriand, Attala<\/em>, paru en 1801, et tellement connu \u00e0 l’\u00e9poque qu’il a inspir\u00e9 le nom du Comt\u00e9 d’Attala dans l’\u00e9tat du Mississippi (Attala, vivait<\/em> en Louisiane, sur les rives du Mississippi).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
