Libellula herculea, Silver-sided Skimmer ou encore Hercules skimmer, est une libellule spectaculaire par ses couleurs et sa robustesse. Son abdomen est rouge vif et les flancs de son thorax couverts d'une pulv\u00e9rulence argent\u00e9e. On ne peut le confondre avec aucun autre odonate au Panama (il ressemble un peu au Thermothemis africain). Le m\u00e2le mesure 47 \u00e0 55 mm, l'aile post\u00e9rieure 35.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Je les ai rencontr\u00e9s au bord de mares ou d'\u00e9tangs, en plaine ou en moyenne montagne, en limite de for\u00eat humide, perch\u00e9s en bout de branche, attendant les femelles, sans les chercher activement.
Le thorax est tr\u00e8s trapu, les segments abdominaux tr\u00e8s larges, aussi larges que longs.
La pr\u00e9sence d'au moins deux veines transverses dans le triangle (bridge) le diff\u00e9rencie des Orthemis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Il est tr\u00e8s largement r\u00e9pandu en Am\u00e9rique centrale et en Am\u00e9rique du Sud ; on le trouve du sud du Mexique au nord de l'Argentine, il est pr\u00e9sent en Guyane Fran\u00e7aise.

J'ai assist\u00e9 \u00e0 l'accouplement en vol sur la petite mare du Canopy Lodge, le 3 septembre 2012. Le m\u00e2le pr\u00e9sent depuis un instant est venu agripper la femelle ci-contre qui pensait s'installer pour pondre tranquillement. Ils se sont rapidement pos\u00e9s sur un arbuste puis ont aussit\u00f4t d\u00e9coll\u00e9 et... je les ai perdus de vue. Je suis parti \u00e0 leur poursuite et \u00e0 une vingtaine de m\u00e8tres, j'ai involontairement provoqu\u00e9 leur d\u00e9collage sans les voir, juste devant moi, \u00e0 hauteur de photographe\u202f! Ils se sont finalement install\u00e9s au sommet d'une fleur de bananier o\u00f9 j'ai pu les approcher en escaladant un tronc... moussu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les femelles peuvent pondre dans deux habitats totalement diff\u00e9rents ; soit dans une pi\u00e8ce d'eau, mare temporaire ou permanente, rivi\u00e8re tr\u00e8s calme, comme j'ai pu l'observer, o\u00f9 la femelle se contente par de brusques mouvements d'abdomen de larguer ses \u0153ufs dans l'eau. Soit dans les phytotelmes (habitat aquatique d'une plante terrestre) comme les brom\u00e9liac\u00e9es ou simplement une cavit\u00e9 dans un arbre contenant de l'eau.
Noter comme la largeur de la partie terminale de son abdomen est spectaculaire, le 8\u00b0 segment \u00e9tant d'ailleurs muni d'expansions ventrales, destin\u00e9es \u00e0 provoquer un \u00e9claboussement lors de la ponte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Libellula<\/strong> nous ram\u00e8ne \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tymologie m\u00eame du mot \u00ab libellule \u00bb et il faut revenir au XVIe si\u00e8cle avec le moine zoologiste Guillaume Rondelet pour comprendre l\u2019origine de ce terme. Il a remarqu\u00e9 que la forme des larves aquatiques<\/a> de certaines libellules, en l\u2019occurrence celles des zygopt\u00e8res, ressemblait \u00e0 celle du corps du requin marteau<\/a> (Sphyrna zygaena).
Ce poisson avait re\u00e7u diff\u00e9rents noms vernaculaires dont celui de Libella<\/em> par analogie avec la forme d\u2019un niveau de charpentier<\/a> (appel\u00e9 autrefois libella), mais il faut tout de m\u00eame une bonne dose d\u2019imagination pour y trouver une ressemblance\u2026
Guillaume Rondelet a donc nomm\u00e9 ces larves Libella fluviatilis<\/em> (1).
Ce n\u2019est qu\u2019en 1758 que Linn\u00e9 fait franchir le pas et que Libella<\/em> devient Libellula<\/em> sans doute pour introduire une notion de petite taille par le suffixe diminutif \u2013ule<\/em>. Et le grand naturaliste utilise le terme Libellula<\/em> pour nommer tous les odonates alors connus.
Herculea<\/strong> de Hercules<\/em> avec le suffixe -eum<\/em> qui signifie bien s\u00fbr Hercule<\/em> et souligne le carat\u00e8re robuste et puissant de cet odonate, comme le h\u00e9ros de la mythologie, connu pour sa taille imposante et sa force l\u00e9gendaire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
