Cette fois encore, je n’ai pas eu de chance avec Brachymesia herbida ; je n’ai rencontr\u00e9 qu’un seul m\u00e2le et \u00e0 distance. Malgr\u00e9 cela, l’esp\u00e8ce est facile \u00e0 identifier. M\u00e2les et femelles sont tr\u00e8s ressemblants, le thorax est brun ocr\u00e9, l’abdomen jaune avec des marques noires dorsales qui s’\u00e9largissent distalement. Les ailes sont parfois fortement ambr\u00e9es chez les sujets \u00e2g\u00e9s, mais toujours marqu\u00e9es d’une suffusion jaune sur le bord costal de la partie basale. Les yeux sont brun-rouge au-dessus, marqu\u00e9s de bleu en dessous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il mesure environ 45 mm, ce qui pour donner une id\u00e9e correspond \u00e0 notre L. quadrimaculata.
C’est une esp\u00e8ce d’eau stagnante qui fr\u00e9quente souvent les larges pi\u00e8ces d’eau au Costa Rica (ici, un petit lac), mais je l’ai vu en Colombie<\/a> sur une partie tr\u00e8s ralentie d’une rivi\u00e8re et au Br\u00e9sil<\/a>, une femelle en ponte sur un ruisseau stagnant.
Il aime \u00e0 se percher au-dessus ou juste au bord de l’eau, \u00e0 l’extr\u00e9mit\u00e9 d’un rameau pour surveiller tr\u00e8s activement son territoire.
Ce serait une esp\u00e8ce pionni\u00e8re, abondante, voire dominante sur les bassins d’irrigation en Guadeloupe (INPN<\/a>).

On note qu’il se pla\u00eet \u00e0 adopter la posture dite de l’ob\u00e9lisque<\/em>, en pointant son abdomen au z\u00e9nith, ceci dans un souci de thermor\u00e9gulation, pour exposer le moins possible de son abdomen au soleil et mettre son thorax \u00e0 l’ombre de ses ailes. Pour nous, la chaleur de cette journ\u00e9e n’\u00e9tait pas pire que celle des jours pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents, simplement \u00e9touffante \"\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On rencontre le Tawny Pennant (son nom am\u00e9ricain, \u00ab\u00a0Fannion jaune\u00a0\u00bb, pour la coloration jaune de son corps, fr\u00e9quemment post\u00e9 en bout de rameau…) du sud des \u00c9tats-Unis jusqu’en Argentine.

L’esp\u00e8ce (d\u00e9j\u00e0 connue de Hagen sous le nom de Libellula herbida, mais non d\u00e9crite) a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9crite par Gundlach, naturaliste cubain d’origine allemande, dans le document (1), premier travail tr\u00e8s important et longtemps m\u00e9connu sur les odonates cubains. Ce n’\u00e9tait pas un \u00ab\u00a0vrai\u00a0\u00bb entomologiste et il est amusant de constater que le nombre de segments abdominaux des odonates qu’il d\u00e9crit est variable de 9 \u00e0 12 (2) ! <\/p>\n<\/div>

N’ayant pas encore eu connaissance de cette publication qui restera dans l’ombre jusqu’en 1909, Kirby a \u00e9galement d\u00e9crit l’esp\u00e8ce, mais en ao\u00fbt 1889 et sous le nom de Cannacria batesii. Le nom d’esp\u00e8ce herbida<\/em> publi\u00e9 en mars de la m\u00eame ann\u00e9e est donc prioritaire. Enfin, Selys examinant l’esp\u00e8ce type nomm\u00e9e par Kirby Brachymesia australis (futur B. furcata…), a conclu que ce Cannacria maintenant herbida<\/em> appartenait aussi genre Brachymesia (2) ! Ce n’est pas toujours facile \u00e0 suivre…

Brachymesia<\/strong>, sans doute du grec brachy<\/em>, pour –court<\/em> et meso<\/em>, pour milieu auquel est ajout\u00e9 un suffixe signifiant –concernant, en rapport avec<\/em>. Si cette hypoth\u00e8se est la bonne, ce nom de genre se r\u00e9f\u00e9rerait \u00e0 l’appendice anal inf\u00e9rieur ou \u00e9piprocte (4). En effet Kirby \u00e9crit : \u00ab\u00a0lower appendage very stout and short, not half the length of the upper ones\u00a0\u00bb (appendice inf\u00e9rieur massif et court, n’atteignant pas le milieu de la longueur des sup\u00e9rieurs) (3). Cependant, Paulson & Dunkle 2012, sugg\u00e8rent que ce serait en rapport avec la base de l’abdomen, courte et dilat\u00e9e, ce qui semble moins probable, car il serait \u00e9tonnant que Kirby ait caract\u00e9ris\u00e9 cette partie du corps comme \u00ab\u00a0milieu\u00a0\u00bb.
Herbida<\/strong>, du latin herbidus<\/em> – pour couvert d’herbes<\/em>, puis vert<\/em>. Le nom cr\u00e9\u00e9 par Hagen, repris dans la description de Gundlach para\u00eet faire r\u00e9f\u00e9rence au biotope, mais celui-ci n’est pas mentionn\u00e9 dans la description. Par contre, Gundlach fait plusieurs fois r\u00e9f\u00e9rence (en Espagnol) \u00e0 la couleur \u00ab\u00a0olivado\u00a0\u00bb soit la couleur vert olive (3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
