Perithemis bella est une raret\u00e9, il n’existait pas de photos disponibles sur le Web avant celles de notre \u00e9quipe, \u00e0 part celles de Dennis Paulson, \u00e0 la fois sous forme de scan, dans sa collection<\/a> ou au P\u00e9rou sur Inaturalist<\/a>.
C’est un insecte minuscule, 23 \u00e0 24 mm au total, dont les ailes sont tr\u00e8s richement color\u00e9es, \u00ab\u00a0Wings rich and pure golden yellow…\u00a0\u00bb (les ailes d’un riche et pur jaune dor\u00e9) \u00e9crit Ris dans sa r\u00e9vision du genre (3) en 1931.
J’ai abord\u00e9 mes recherches<\/em> sur l’esp\u00e8ce par ce document et j’ai \u00e9t\u00e9 emb\u00eat\u00e9, car il \u00e9crit ensuite :\u00a0\u00bb…the hind wing entirely, the front
wing to the pterostigma in the costal space, to half-way between the triangle and nodus in the rest of the wing, the border line slanting towards the base.\u00a0\u00bb Pour Ris, hormis l’espace sous-costal<\/a> postnodal<\/a>, l’aile ant\u00e9rieure n’est color\u00e9e qu’\u00e0 sa base, ce qui ne correspond pas \u00e0 ce que nous avons observ\u00e9, o\u00f9 elle est color\u00e9e de la base au pt\u00e9rostigma.
Je n’ai pas \u00e9t\u00e9 plus rassur\u00e9 quand j’ai lu la m\u00eame description dans Kirby (1) accompagn\u00e9e d’une planche tr\u00e8s explicite :<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En continuant mes recherches, j’ai vu que le m\u00eame Kirby a d\u00e9crit Perithemis austeni en 1897 (2), un Perithemis qu’il trouvait tr\u00e8s proche de P. bella : \u00ab\u00a0Closely allied to P. bella<\/em>\u2026\u00a0\u00bb \u00ab\u00a0In most other characters this insect agrees with P. bella<\/em> ;\u2026\u00a0\u00bb . Mais dont seulement la partie apicale de l’aile ant\u00e9rieure \u00e9tait subhyaline (\u00ab\u00a0only the apical area of the fore wings subhyaline<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0). Et les deux esp\u00e8ces ont \u00e9t\u00e9 ult\u00e9rieurement synonymis\u00e9es, retenant le premier nom donn\u00e9 \u00e0 l’esp\u00e8ce, et reconnaissant la variabilit\u00e9 de l’extension de la coloration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il n’y a pas beaucoup de vari\u00e9t\u00e9 dans mes photos ; elles ont \u00e9t\u00e9 faites sur une p\u00e9riode de 3 minutes, toutes sur le m\u00eame perchoir, une branche morte sortant de l’eau, \u00e0 une dizaine de m\u00e8tres du rivage d’un petit lac, pr\u00e8s de la rivi\u00e8re Tahuayo. Il surveillait son territoire, faisant de brefs vols d’intimidation vers d’autres odonates qui tentaient d’empi\u00e9ter sur son terrain r\u00e9serv\u00e9.
Mais Phil Benstead en a fait des photos, trois jours auparavant, sur la rivi\u00e8re Tahuayo, depuis la pirogue…

L’habitat de Perithemis bella est donc large, rivi\u00e8re tr\u00e8s lente (tr\u00e8s faible niveau) ou eau stagnante, en limite de for\u00eat.
Il est tr\u00e8s rare, mais sa distribution semble pourtant \u00e9tendue, selon l’IUCN : l’\u00e9tat br\u00e9silien du Para (mais pas Amazonas), l’Amazonie Colombienne et P\u00e9ruvienne. La carte de l’IUCN<\/a> montre des donn\u00e9es en \u00c9quateur, non reprise dans le texte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie
<\/span>Le genre Perithemis<\/strong> a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9 par Hagen en 1861, du grec peri<\/em>, –autour<\/em> et de Themis<\/em>, d\u00e9esse grecque de L\u2019Ordre et de la Justice. Themis est fr\u00e9quemment utilis\u00e9 encore apr\u00e8s Hagen, pour nommer des Libellulidae, par imitation de ce que faisaient les anciens en utilisant des noms issus de la mythologie.\u00a0
Ian Endersby et Heinrich Fliedner (4) proposent cette origine : \u00ab\u00a0Le nom se rapporte probablement \u00e0 l’abdomen plus \u00e9troit \u00e0 la base (= autour du corps) qui est une caract\u00e9ristique distinctive\u00a0\u00bb et Hagen \u00e9crit :\u00a0\u00bb abdomen beaucoup plus court que\u00a0 les ailes, large, aplati, plus \u00e9troit \u00e0 la base\u00a0\u00bb.
Bella<\/strong> est fourni par Kirby, qui ne donne aucun indice. Mais, en latin, c’est le nominatif\u00a0singulier\u00a0f\u00e9minin\u00a0d’un\u00a0adjectif<\/em> signifiant \u00ab joli, \u00e9l\u00e9gant \u00bb et il est vraisemblable que Kirby l’ait trouv\u00e9 tr\u00e8s joli…<\/p>\n\n\n\n
