Une seule et unique rencontre avec Perithemis cornelia sur un seul support, sous le m\u00eame angle, en tentant de s’approcher dans l’eau trop profonde d’une petite rivi\u00e8re. C’est tout de m\u00eame un cadeau, car c’est la derni\u00e8re matin\u00e9e de prospection, nous reprenons la pirogue pour retourner vers Iquitos d\u00e8s l’apr\u00e8s-midi.
C’est sans doute un jeune sujet dont les ailes dor\u00e9es montrent \u00e0 peine les marques plus sombres caract\u00e9ristiques de l’esp\u00e8ce ; on les devine cependant, sur l’aile post\u00e9rieure, juste apr\u00e8s et en dessous du nodus et plus bas, sous la forme d’une large virgule un peu plus sombre. On ne distingue pas les marques des ailes ant\u00e9rieures, en principe identiques pr\u00e8s du nodus mais aussi \u00e0 l’extr\u00e9mit\u00e9 du subtriangle.
Mais ces marques sombres sont tr\u00e8s variables quant \u00e0 leur extension et leur intensit\u00e9. Et j’ai eu quelques doutes quand j’ai vu les pt\u00e9rographies figurant dans la r\u00e9vision de Ris (1). Elles semblent n’avoir aucun rapport avec les ailes de mon sujet… Il me manque sans doute un \u00e9l\u00e9ment, car mon sujet est bien copie-conforme de ce qu’on trouve sur le Web, Inaturalist<\/a> par exemple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plusieurs autres d\u00e9tails confirment l’identification : les pattes toutes jaunes, le thorax jaune avec des faibles marques noires sur les sutures, l’abdomen d\u00e9pourvu de marques sombres. Et surtout, l’extr\u00e9mit\u00e9 des ailes hyalines, tr\u00e8s visiblement sur les ailes ant\u00e9rieures, moins sur les post\u00e9rieures.
C’est une tr\u00e8s petite esp\u00e8ce et Ris, dans sa r\u00e9vision du genre (1) nous dit que l’abdomen mesure seulement 13 mm, ce qui donne une longueur totale de moins de 25 mm (le \u00d8 d’une pi\u00e8ce de 2\u20ac !).
La photo ci-dessus souligne l’aspect disproportionn\u00e9 de l’insecte, les yeux \u00e9normes par rapport au thorax.

Les Perithemis se rencontrent, selon les esp\u00e8ces, sur des ruisseaux, des petites rivi\u00e8res ou des lacs et \u00e9tangs ; celui-ci semble donc pr\u00e9f\u00e9rer les eaux faiblement courantes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On peut rencontrer Perithemis cornelia dans tout l’est du bassin amazonien : de la Guyane Fran\u00e7aise \u00e0 la Colombie, l’est du P\u00e9rou, le nord de la Bolivie et l’est du Br\u00e9sil.

\u00c9tymologie<\/span>
Le genre\u00a0Perithemis<\/strong>\u00a0a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9 par Hagen en 1861, du grec\u00a0peri<\/em>, \u2013autour<\/em>\u00a0et de\u00a0Themis<\/em>, d\u00e9esse grecque de L\u2019Ordre et de la Justice. Themis est fr\u00e9quemment utilis\u00e9 encore apr\u00e8s Hagen, pour nommer des Libellulidae, par imitation de ce que faisaient les anciens en utilisant des noms issus de la mythologie.\u00a0
Ian Endersby et Heinrich Fliedner (2) proposent cette origine : \u00ab Le nom se rapporte probablement \u00e0 l\u2019abdomen plus \u00e9troit \u00e0 la base (= autour du corps) qui est une caract\u00e9ristique distinctive \u00bb et Hagen \u00e9crit : \u00bb abdomen beaucoup plus court que les ailes, large, aplati, plus \u00e9troit \u00e0 la base \u00bb.
Cornelia<\/strong> est une r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 l’histoire antique ; Ris, \u00e9crit dans ses \u00ab\u00a0Libellulinen\u00a0\u00bb que pour quelques nouveaux noms, il a suivi l’exemple de Drury en les choisissant parmi les femmes de l’Ancien Monde <\/em>(3).<\/em> De nombreux personnages historiques romains portent ce nom, issu du clan Corneli, mais il est impossible de conna\u00eetre de fa\u00e7on certaine celui (celle plut\u00f4t !) qu’honore Ris, peut-\u00eatre Cornelia Africana, la fille de Scipion l’Africain et m\u00e8re des r\u00e9formateurs Gracchus, peinte par de nombreux artistes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
