Labrogomphus torvus fait partie d'un genre monosp\u00e9cifique que Needham a cr\u00e9\u00e9 pour lui en 1931 ; il faut dire qu'il est assez particulier et poss\u00e8de une caract\u00e9ristique qu'il ne partage qu'avec le genre Macrogomphus.
C'est d'ailleurs ce qui surprend au premier abord, la longueur du 9\u00b0 segment abdominal est environ deux fois plus long que le 8\u00b0. Ce dernier porte d'ailleurs deux expansions ventrales, ce que l'on rencontre parfois pour certaines femelles, Orthetrum ou Orthemis (Libellulidae) par exemple, mais jamais pour un m\u00e2le comme ici.

Et la larve de Labrogomphus torvus montre la m\u00eame singularit\u00e9, ce que montre K.D. P. Wilson dans The gomphid dragonflies of Hong Kong, with descriptions of two new species (Anisoptera: Gomphidae)<\/em>, odonatologica 24(3): 319-340. Il pr\u00e9cise que le 9\u00b0 segment de la larve peut \u00eatre dress\u00e9 verticalement permettant \u00e0 la larve (plac\u00e9e horizontalement sur le fond) de respirer alors qu'elle vit principalement enfouie sous la boue de zones calmes de rivi\u00e8res plus ou moins rapides. La larve mesure 49-50 mm.
Le sch\u00e9ma est tir\u00e9 de l'ouvrage cit\u00e9 ci-dessus, tandis que la photo de droite est issue du livre du m\u00eame auteur, Hong Kong Dragonflies<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On d\u00e9crit \u00e9galement \u00e0 l'imago de tr\u00e8s fortes \u00e9pines sur les f\u00e9murs post\u00e9rieurs (encore plus puissantes que celles des Erythemis, Libellulidae), d\u00e9tails qu'on ne voit pas sur mon unique photo de ce tr\u00e8s jeune sujet.

L'holotype (l'individu qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 le premier d\u00e9crit), une femelle, mesure 81 mm, son abdomen 63 mm.

Selon l'IUCN<\/a> il serait cantonn\u00e9 au sud-est de la Chine, auquel il faut rajouter le Vietnam (premi\u00e8re donn\u00e9e en 2013).
