Il est tr\u00e8s difficile de trouver de bonnes photos de Phyllocycla medusa (Gomphidae). La seule correcte et facilement accessible est celle de Tim Faasen sur Inaturalist<\/a>. Celles de notre \u00e9quipe ne sont pas brillantes, toutes en vol.

C’est un genre qui contient de nombreuses esp\u00e8ces, rarement rencontr\u00e9es, dont les femelles sont souvent inconnues. Celle-ci a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9crite par Jean Belle (1), qui insiste sur le fait que ces odonates habitant les rivi\u00e8res de for\u00eats denses sont tr\u00e8s difficiles \u00e0 rep\u00e9rer, seulement vus en vol et difficiles \u00e0 collecter. Les femelles qui ne sont observ\u00e9es que lors des pontes sont tr\u00e8s rares en collection et tr\u00e8s difficiles \u00e0 s\u00e9parer.
Il y a donc une forte probabilit\u00e9 pour que des nouveaux membres du genre soient d\u00e9couverts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous ne l’avons aper\u00e7u qu’une seule fois, en vol, au-dessus de la rivi\u00e8re Tahuayo, alors que nous \u00e9tions en pirogue. Le genre est identifiable avec les derniers segments abdominaux tr\u00e8s allong\u00e9s, portant une foliation sur le huiti\u00e8me. Pour l’esp\u00e8ce… disons qu’elle correspond parfaitement \u00e0 la photo d\u00e9j\u00e0 cit\u00e9e, pour ce que l’on peut en voir sur la mienne. C’\u00e9tait aussi, lors de notre prospection, la seule esp\u00e8ce du genre connue dans cette r\u00e9serve (nous en avons trouv\u00e9 une seconde).
Il mesure 57 mm pour une aile post\u00e9rieure de 31.5 mm.

Ce qui nous a marqu\u00e9 quand nous l’avons observ\u00e9 en vol, c’est la teinte brun-rouge des derniers segments.

Bien qu’il soit tr\u00e8s rarement vu, sa distribution serait extr\u00eamement \u00e9tendue ; la r\u00e9serve de Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo au P\u00e9rou constitue actuellement sa limite est de r\u00e9partition qui s’\u00e9tendrait \u00e0 travers l’Amazonie jusqu’\u00e0 l’\u00e9tat de Bahia au Br\u00e9sil, \u00e0 l’est. Entre les deux les observations sont extr\u00eamement rares.

Il est \u00e0 noter que depuis la publication du synopsis de Belle, il n’a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9crit qu’une seule esp\u00e8ce, par le m\u00eame Belle, portant \u00e0 31 le nombre d’esp\u00e8ces du genre.

\u00c9tymologie<\/span><\/strong>
Phyllocycla<\/strong> (2) ; du grec phyllo<\/em>, pour feuille<\/em> et kyklos<\/em>, pour cercle ou rond, en rapport avec la forme arrondie de l’expansion foliac\u00e9e du huiti\u00e8me segment. Mais ce nom de genre d\u00fb \u00e0 Calvert est une anagramme du genre cr\u00e9\u00e9 par S\u00e9lys (3) sous le nom de Cyclophylla et qui \u00e9tait d\u00e9j\u00e0 occup\u00e9<\/em>.
Medusa<\/strong> ; n’ayant pas \u00e9t\u00e9 chang\u00e9 en pierre en l’observant, je n’ai pas d’explication pour le choix de ce nom mythologique, qui fait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 M\u00e9duse, une Gorgone \u00e0 chevelure de serpent, si ce n’est que suivre l’usage des descripteurs anciens qui puisaient dans l’histoire et la mythologie.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
