Pr\u00e9dation par Onychogomphus forcipatus femelle sur Enallagma cyathigerum m\u00e2le<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le 25 juillet 2024, j’ai prospect\u00e9 entre la V\u00e8re et un champ de ma\u00efs qui la longe, dans l’espoir de trouver des Gomphus et en particulier Gomphus simillimus que j’avais eu la chance d’apercevoir quelques ann\u00e9es plus t\u00f4t, dans une all\u00e9e couverte d’arbre de la base de loisirs de V\u00e8re-Gr\u00e9signe. Je suis donc un peu \u00e0 distance de la pleine activit\u00e9 des odonates qui se d\u00e9roule sur les \u00e9tangs de la base, et c’est volontaire, afin de trouver aussi des jeunes en maturation et des femelles.
\u00c0 quelques m\u00e8tres de moi, un odonate s’est pos\u00e9 au bord du champ de ma\u00efs ; j’ai reconnu de loin un Onychogomphus, mais dans cette r\u00e9gion, je les v\u00e9rifie tous car j’esp\u00e8re toujours trouver des O. uncatus, qui ne sont pas pr\u00e9sents dans mon Maine-Loire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Et c’\u00e9tait malheureusement<\/em> une femelle Onychogomphus forcipatus, mais elle avait captur\u00e9 un m\u00e2le que j’ai identifi\u00e9 quelques clich\u00e9s plus tard comme un m\u00e2le Enallagma cyathigerum.
Classiquement, le repas commence par la t\u00eate, sans doute dans le but de d\u00e9truire une partie des centres nerveux, \u00e0 moins que ce ne soit la partie la plus savoureuse… Pourtant, le thorax est beaucoup plus riche en prot\u00e9ines, puisqu’il abrite les puissants muscles impliqu\u00e9s dans le vol.
Ci-dessous \u00e0 gauche, noter que les pattes ant\u00e9rieures maintiennent la proie, et n’interviennent que rarement pour se cramponner aux supports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mais 2 minutes et 30 secondes plus tard (entre les photos 3 et 5), le thorax a \u00e9t\u00e9 englouti. Le sujet a chang\u00e9 de support, s’\u00e9chappant de quelques m\u00e8tres, sans doute pour fuir ma pr\u00e9sence de plus en plus rapproch\u00e9e. Il s’est pos\u00e9 sur les barbes d’un \u00e9pi de ma\u00efs et, comme souvent, lorsque les odonates sont occup\u00e9s \u00e0 leur repas, ils sont assez tol\u00e9rants, j’ai pu m’approcher \u00e0 nouveau.
Elle a alors laiss\u00e9 tomber l’abdomen et \u00e0 ma grande surprise, elle a mang\u00e9 les ailes. Est-ce volontaire ou \u00e9taient-elles engag\u00e9es dans son appareil broyeur avec le thorax et ne parvenait-elle pas \u00e0 s’en d\u00e9barrasser, je ne sais pas. Toujours est-il, qu’elle a soigneusement mastiqu\u00e9 et aval\u00e9 les membranes, ce que je n’avais jamais vu faire. Et c’est assez logique, car leur valeur nutritive doit \u00eatre tr\u00e8s r\u00e9duite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finalement, ma derni\u00e8re photo est insolite, montrant cet odonate imposant contemplant l’abdomen minuscule de sa victime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le rapport de force, de poids et de taille est en effet d\u00e9mesur\u00e9 ; selon Ilvonen & Suhonen, 2016 (1) Enallagma cyathigerum p\u00e8se en moyenne (13 individus) 0.0345 g, et sa taille varie de 29 \u00e0 36 mm. Je n’ai jamais pes\u00e9 une femelle Onychogomphus forcipatus et je n’en ai pas trouv\u00e9 le poids ; un m\u00e2le mesure 46 \u00e0 50 mm, c’est une esp\u00e8ce massive et par comparaison avec d’autres Ansiopt\u00e8res de taille \u00e9quivalente on peut penser qu’il atteint dans les 0.6 ou 0.7 g.

Le pr\u00e9dateur est donc moiti\u00e9 plus grand et p\u00e8se presque 20 fois plus que sa proie. \u00c0 titre indicatif (il est fabuleux de penser que des scientifiques se soient pench\u00e9s sur le sujet) la force de la mandibule d’un O. forcipatus atteint 1.23 newton (2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
