C’\u00e9tait la quatri\u00e8me fois que je rencontrais Brachydiplax chalybea, apr\u00e8s le Laos<\/a>, le Cambodge<\/a> et la Malaisie<\/a>. Mais c’est la premi\u00e8re fois que je r\u00e9ussis \u00e0 le voir vraiment de profil, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 il fait voir son thorax si particulier. Il m’a toujours sembl\u00e9 commun, m\u00eame si je n’avais jamais pu l’approcher de tr\u00e8s pr\u00e8s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Et, si en Tha\u00eflande, nous avons prospect\u00e9 des dizaines de sites, nous ne l’avons rencontr\u00e9 que sur 2 sites voisins, \u00e0 Chiang Mai, c’est-\u00e0-dire, en plaine et sur des eaux stagnantes. C’est son milieu ordinaire, constitu\u00e9 d’\u00e9tangs, lacs, foss\u00e9s, mares o\u00f9 il occupe les berges bien v\u00e9g\u00e9talis\u00e9es.
Il est tr\u00e8s territorial et se met en \u00e9vidence par son activit\u00e9 permanente.
Il mesure 33 \u00e0 35 mm, mais sa taille est apparemment tr\u00e8s variable, c’est du moins ce qu’en dit Selys (1) qui avait m\u00eame cr\u00e9\u00e9 une esp\u00e8ce appel\u00e9e B. maria (1878) pour les grands sujets de Nouvelle-Guin\u00e9e et de Java par rapport aux petits des Philippines. Mais ayant trouv\u00e9 des sujets de taille interm\u00e9diaire, ils sont tous revenus dans la case B. chalybea. Cependant, si l’esp\u00e8ce est connue \u00e0 Java, elle ne l’est pas en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guin\u00e9e, \u00e0 ma connaissance, o\u00f9 l’on rencontre ses deux cousins B. duivenbodei <\/a><\/em>et denticauda<\/em>.
En anglais, il prend le nom de Blue dasher ; il est \u00e0 noter que c’est aussi le nom vernaculaire de Pachydiplax longipennis, un Libellulidae am\u00e9ricain…

En Tha\u00eflande, on ne peut gu\u00e8re le confondre qu’avec Brachydiplax farinosa<\/a>, leur cousin B. sobrina<\/a> \u00e9tant rare. Mais B. farinosa, comme B. sobrina d’ailleurs, ne montre pas cette coloration brune sur la face lat\u00e9rale du thorax et pas de tache alaire basale ambr\u00e9e aux ailes post\u00e9rieures.
Il compte \u00e9galement moins de nervures ant\u00e9nodales<\/a> que V. farinosa, 6 ou 7 contre 8 ou 8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sa distribution est tr\u00e8s \u00e9tendue, de l’est de l’Inde au Japon, il atteint au sud Java et le Sulawesi.

Les femelles, tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rentes des m\u00e2les, sont rarement vues en dehors des actions de ponte, c’est la premi\u00e8re fois que j’en observe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mais le plus surprenant pour moi dans ces photos de femelle en ponte est la couleur des \u0153ufs. On les voit ci-dessous sur ce tr\u00e8s mauvais agrandissement ; ils sont verts et semblent translucides !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(2)
Brachydiplax<\/strong> :\u00a0brachy<\/em>\u00a0est un terme\u00a0grec<\/em>\u00a0signifiant court et effectivement les odonates de ce genre sont petits, en particulier leur abdomen semble court.\u00a0Diplax<\/em>\u00a0est une construction des deux mots Grecs ;\u00a0dis<\/em>\u00a0signifiant\u00a0double<\/em>\u00a0et\u00a0plax<\/em>\u00a0se rapportant \u00e0\u00a0toute chose plate et large<\/em>, car la partie post\u00e9rieure du prothorax des odonates de ce genre montre 2 lobes semi-circulaires ; Diplax est d’ailleurs un nom de genre non valide, cr\u00e9\u00e9 par Charpentier en 1840 pour d\u00e9crire un Sympetrum, car il ignorait que Newman, l’avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 d\u00e9crit sous le nom qui est rest\u00e9, ant\u00e9riorit\u00e9 oblige.
Mais, lorsque Brauer a eu besoin de cr\u00e9er de nouveaux genres, il a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 d’utiliser l’\u00e9l\u00e9ment \u2013diplax pour indiquer qu’il s’agissait de Libellulidae, quelle que soit la forme de leur prothorax.
Chalybea<\/strong>, du latin chalybeus, qui signifie ferreux, couleur de fer<\/em>, se r\u00e9f\u00e9rerait \u00e0 la coloration du thorax :\u00a0\u00bb thorax, derri\u00e8re les pattes, au milieu, brun noir\u00e2tre\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
