Ce jeune m\u00e2le dythemis sterilis, Brown setwing pour les am\u00e9ricains, se tenait sur les berges impraticables d’une petite rivi\u00e8re,en limite de for\u00eat. Un coin bien sympathique pour les libellules : de l’eau claire qui court sur les cailloux entre des rochers, des rives bien v\u00e9g\u00e9talis\u00e9es, mais il \u00e9tait sans doute trop t\u00f4t, le soleil ne paraissait que par flaques \u00e0 travers les arbres et outre cette esp\u00e8ce, je n’ai contact\u00e9 que Enallagma cardenium, tout de m\u00eame une nouvelle esp\u00e8ce pour moi.
Son identification ne pose pas de probl\u00e8me avec son thorax qui montre un motif complexe de bandes jaunes sur fond noir, l’abdomen tr\u00e8s fin, ponctu\u00e9 de taches jaunes allong\u00e9es ; il n’y a qu’un seul autre Dythemis \u00e0 Cuba, Dythemis rufinervis<\/a>, tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La posture adopt\u00e9e ci-dessous, avec les ailes plus basses que le thorax, est habituelle \u00e0 ce genre et leur vaut ce brownsetwing<\/em>.
C’est certainement un sujet jeune, ce qui explique en partie ses yeux tr\u00e8s rouges ; mais m\u00eame chez les sujets matures, les yeux sont d’une couleur \u00e9tonnante et peu d’odonates affichent de telles teintes, comme on pourra le constater sur des photos prises, au Panama<\/a>, au Costa Rica<\/a>, ou au Mexique<\/a>.
Il mesure 40 mm et son aire de r\u00e9partition s\u2019\u00e9tend \u00e0 travers l\u2019Am\u00e9rique Centrale, du Mexique au Venezuela et \u00e0 la Colombie et aux Antilles. Le biotope sur lequel je l’ai rencontr\u00e9 est son milieu de vie typique.

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong><\/span>
Dythemis (1)<\/strong>, du mot grec\u00a0dy\u00a0<\/em>qui signifie\u00a0deux<\/em>\u00a0et de Themis. Il faut supposer que si Hagen a choisi Themis, \u2013 d\u00e9esse grecque de l\u2019ordre et de la justice, c\u2019est \u00e0 la fois pour respecter la \u00ab mode \u00bb qui consistait \u00e0 donner un nom en rapport avec la mythologie, tr\u00e8s en vogue \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque, et parce qu\u2019elle est particuli\u00e8rement bien adapt\u00e9e \u00e0 la taxonomie, science qui vise \u00e0 d\u00e9crire et ordonner et classer les familles, genres et esp\u00e8ces. \u00ab\u00a0Deux\u00a0\u00bb pourrait faire r\u00e9f\u00e9rence au 10\u00b0 segment de la femelle qui pr\u00e9sente deux tubercules.
Sterilis<\/strong>, du latin\u00a0sterilis<\/em>, pour\u00a0st\u00e9rile<\/em>,\u00a0inf\u00e9cond<\/em>. Je ne suis pas parvenu \u00e0 retrouver la description de Hagen concernant cette libellule d\u00e9j\u00e0 d\u00e9crite par Rambur sous le nom de Libellula tessellata. Je suppose qu\u2019elle a fait l\u2019objet d\u2019une publication ant\u00e9rieure \u00e0 1861 et je ne peux donc expliquer le choix de cet \u00e9tonnant \u00e9pith\u00e8te sp\u00e9cifique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
