Peu apr\u00e8s l’entr\u00e9e, dans l’enceinte du temple Pha Lad, Chris, passant le long d’un b\u00e2timent, a d\u00e9nich\u00e9 ce superbe m\u00e2le Indaeschna erythromelas, Aeshnidae, perch\u00e9 assez bas, dans un arbre de la for\u00eat qui entoure le lieu. S’il a d\u00e9coll\u00e9 une fois, il s’est repos\u00e9 exactement de la m\u00eame fa\u00e7on et la configuration des lieux nous interdisait d’autres angles. Ce sera notre seule rencontre.
C’est un odonate massif avec un abdomen lourd, d’environ 90 mm de longueur totale, pour un abdomen de 67 mm.

Jusqu’\u00e0 l’article de Schneider et al. (1) en 2023 cette magnifique libellule appartenait aux Polycanthagyna (m\u00eame si elle avait \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e0 l’origine d\u00e9crite dans le \u00ab\u00a0grand genre\u00a0\u00bb Aeschna) ; cette analyse g\u00e9n\u00e9tique a synonymis\u00e9 ce genre avec les Indaeschna, ce changement a \u00e9t\u00e9 valid\u00e9 par la World Odonata List<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Son identification ne pose pas de probl\u00e8me tant les motifs thoraciques et surtout abdominaux sont particuliers.
Dans Field \u00ab\u00a0Guide to the Dragonflies & Damselflies of Northwest india<\/em> \u00a0\u00bb (1), on lit que le Common Tigerhawker<\/em> centrerait son habitat autour des \u00ab\u00a0petites mares foresti\u00e8res et des ruisseaux de montagne (forest pools and forest streams<\/em> in montainous area)\u00a0\u00bb, en dessous de 1000 m\u00e8tres. Deux habitats tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rents, et \u00e9tonnants, pour moi qui ne connais pas cette esp\u00e8ce, et contradictoires<\/em> quand on imagine les sp\u00e9cificit\u00e9s de la ponte dans l’un ou l’autre de ces biotopes. Cependant, de fa\u00e7on \u00e9tonnante, on retrouve exactement la m\u00eame description d’habitat dans \u00ab\u00a0A field guide to Common Dragonflies and Damselflies of Buthan\u00a0\u00bb (2), qui cependant le d\u00e9grade en Tiger hawker<\/em> ce qui confirme, si on pouvait en douter, de l’int\u00e9r\u00eat relatif des noms \u00ab\u00a0vernaculaires\u00a0\u00bb.
Il y avait bien une triste mare artificielle \u00e0 proximit\u00e9<\/a> et nous \u00e9tions \u00e0 environ 675 m d’altitude. Un vrai torrent, que nous avons prospect\u00e9 \u00e0 une centaine de m\u00e8tres, avec cinq paires d’yeux, n’a r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 que peu d’esp\u00e8ces communes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La nervation est tr\u00e8s int\u00e9ressante, en particulier la base de l’aile post\u00e9rieure et son angle anal, dont la partie inf\u00e9rieure est tr\u00e8s<\/strong> d\u00e9tach\u00e9e du reste de l’aile.

J’avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 remarqu\u00e9 cette \u00e9tonnante caract\u00e9ristique sur un autre individu de ce genre, Indaeschna grubaueri<\/a> , en Malaisie.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Sa distribution est tr\u00e8s \u00e9tendue puisqu’on le rencontre de l’est de l’Inde jusqu’au sud de la Chine et \u00e0 Hong Kong et Ta\u00efwan, \u00e0 travers le N\u00e9pal et le Buthan, le Mynamar et la Tha\u00eflande, le Laos, le Cambodge, le Vietnam…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong>
Indaeschna<\/strong> (Fraser, 1926) (3) sugg\u00e9rerait que le premier membre de ce genre aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9crit d’apr\u00e8s un sujet d’inde (Indus<\/em>, pour fleuve de l’Inde, Inde ou indien). Fraser aurait sans doute \u00e9crit Indoaeschna, et il a vu plus \u00e0 l’Est en cr\u00e9ant ce genre, et ne se r\u00e9f\u00e8re pas \u00e0 l’Inde, mais aux Indes Orientales N\u00e9erlandaises.

Aeschna<\/em> est un cas particulier dans l\u2019\u00e9tymologie des noms d\u2019odonates. Il est ici \u00e9crit dans sa version corrig\u00e9e, et on a, en Europe, l\u2019habitude de l\u2019\u00e9crire sans \u00ab c \u00bb, la version de Fabricius (1775) qui a cr\u00e9\u00e9 le nom de genre Aeshna.

On suppose, car il ne l\u2019a pas pr\u00e9cis\u00e9, que Fabricius a form\u00e9 ce nom depuis un mot grec signifiant d\u00e9figurer<\/em> ou ternir<\/em> (pourquoi, c\u2019est une autre \u00e9nigme ?) ; mais Fabricius est un puriste et on ne peut expliquer cette absence de \u00ab c  \u00bb que par une erreur de transcription ou une erreur typographique.
L\u2019absence de ce \u00ab c \u00bb n\u2019est rest\u00e9e la norme que pour le genre Aeshna et tous les \u00ab compos\u00e9s \u00bb l\u2019ont int\u00e9gr\u00e9.

Erythromelas<\/strong>, du grec erythros<\/em> pour rouge<\/em> et melas<\/em> pour noir<\/em>, se r\u00e9f\u00e8re sans doute \u00e0 la coloration des femelles dont l’abdomen est rouge sombre ou brun-rouge avec les derniers segments noirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
