Ren\u00e9 Martin a d\u00e9crit Orolestes octomaculatus d’apr\u00e8s un sp\u00e9cimen captur\u00e9 au Cambodge pendant la Mission Pavie (1). Ce spectaculaire Lestidae mesure 53 mm pour l’abdomen, soit environ 68 mm de longueur totale. Martin ne donne bien s\u00fbr aucun d\u00e9tail suppl\u00e9mentaire et se cantonne \u00e0 son r\u00f4le d’entomologiste, sp\u00e9cialiste des odonates, descripteur d’esp\u00e8ces qu’il n’a jamais vues vivantes. C’est en son hommage qu’est titr\u00e9e la revue fran\u00e7aise, malheureusement uniquement num\u00e9rique maintenant, Martinia<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On ne conna\u00eet actuellement que 4 Orolestes. Deux ont les ailes color\u00e9es O. octomaculatus et O. selysi<\/a>, 2 ont les ailes hyalines, Orolestes Wallacei<\/a> et O. durga qui semble tr\u00e8s rare, confin\u00e9 \u00e0 l’est de l’Inde, dont je n’ai pas trouv\u00e9 de photo, mais dont la description est disponible ici<\/a> (p. 61 et la pt\u00e9rographie<\/a> p. 389). Cet Orolestes octomaculatus fait donc partie des tr\u00e8s rares Lestidae aux ailes color\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’identification ne pose bien s\u00fbr pas de probl\u00e8me ; peu de libellules se posent les quatre ailes ouvertes exhibant huit taches alaires, m\u00eame si celles-ci sont variables avec l’\u00e2ge et entre les individus.
Nous l’avons rencontr\u00e9 en limite de for\u00eat pr\u00e8s d’une pauvre mare artificielle<\/a> presque ass\u00e9ch\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’esp\u00e8ce est pr\u00e9sente en Tha\u00eflande, au Laos, au Cambodge et au Vietnam.
Sur le site de l’IUCN, on peut lire : \u00ab\u00a0Il est probable qu’on le trouve aussi au Cambodge\u00a0\u00bb. Oui, c’est certain, il a m\u00eame \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9crit \u00e0 partir d’un sujet captur\u00e9 dans ce pays !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/span>
Orolestes<\/strong> (MacLahan, 1895)(2) ; oro<\/em> du grec oros<\/em> pour montagne et de lestes. Je suppose que l’auteur l’a nomm\u00e9 ainsi, car il l’a captur\u00e9 au nord de l’Inde, au Darjeeling, r\u00e9gion montagneuse au pied de l’Himalaya.
Lestes a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9 par Leach (1815) et vient du mot grec \u03bb\u03b7\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03c3 qui signifie voleur ou pirate, tr\u00e8s vraisemblablement en raison de la forme des appendices anaux qui \u00e9voque le coutelas courb\u00e9 des pirates (3).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Octomaculatus<\/strong> ; du latin octo<\/em> pour huit<\/em> et de maculatus<\/em> pour tach\u00e9<\/em>, en r\u00e9f\u00e9rence au huit taches port\u00e9es par les quatre ailes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
