Indothemis carnatica fait partie d’un genre qui ne contient qu’une seule autre esp\u00e8ce, I. limbata<\/a> pr\u00e9sente en Tha\u00eflande, mais que nous n’avons pas rencontr\u00e9e. La confusion est cependant difficile avec cette cousine qui a la base des ailes largement ambr\u00e9e.
On le confondrait plus facilement avec Trithemis festiva<\/a>, aussi pr\u00e9sent, qui lui aussi a pourtant la base des ailes ambr\u00e9es et les derniers segments sombres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

J’avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 rencontr\u00e9 ce Light-tipped Demon<\/em> au Vietnam<\/a>, sur une mare, mais toujours en vol ! Ici, il s’est montr\u00e9 patient et j’ai pu l’approcher et l’observer quelques instants, sur la rive d’un grand r\u00e9servoir<\/a> du campus de l’universit\u00e9 de Chiang Mai, pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment \u00e0 l’endroit de la fl\u00e8che rouge.
Le White-Tipped Demon<\/em>, on l’appelle ainsi \u00e0 Singapour, se pla\u00eet donc sur les eaux stagnantes, mares, lacs et \u00e9tangs bien v\u00e9g\u00e9talis\u00e9s, garnis d’herbes hautes sur leurs rives. M\u00eame s’il est peu commun et dispers\u00e9 dans son aire de r\u00e9partition, il est souvent remarquable par son activit\u00e9 quasi-constante.
Qu’il soit appel\u00e9 Light-tipped ou White-tipped, cette extr\u00e9mit\u00e9 claire<\/a><\/em> fait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 l’\u00e9piprocte clair<\/a> (lame supra-anale, sous les cerques(1)).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il mesure 33 \u00e0 39 mm (2).
L’IUCN<\/a> n’a pas vraiment am\u00e9lior\u00e9 la d\u00e9finition de son aire de distribution depuis que je l’ai vu au Vietnam<\/a> : depuis le Sri Lanka et le sud-ouest de l’Inde jusqu’au Vietnam. En fait, les donn\u00e9es de iNaturalist l’emm\u00e8nent sur la c\u00f4te est de la Chine, jusqu’\u00e0 la latitude de Taipei.
Sur une mare, un peu plus en altitude, nous avons observ\u00e9 un tandem en ponte, bien s\u00fbr en vol, et les photos permettent tout juste de se faire une id\u00e9e de l’aspect de la femelle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong><\/span> (3)
Indothemis,<\/strong> de Indus<\/em>, provenant d’Inde<\/em> et de Themis. Themis<\/em>, est la d\u00e9esse grecque de l\u2019ordre et de la justice, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9 de nombreuses fois depuis Hagen (1861), et Ris a suivi la mode en 1916 quand il a cr\u00e9\u00e9 ce genre. Le nom de la d\u00e9esse de l\u2019ordre est particuli\u00e8rement bien adapt\u00e9 \u00e0 la taxonomie, science qui vise \u00e0 d\u00e9crire et ordonner les familles, genres et esp\u00e8ces. Les deux esp\u00e8ces composant ce genre ont en effet et captur\u00e9es l’une en Inde, \u00e0 Bombay, pour I. carnatica (plus exactement I. caesia (Rambur, 1842) synonymis\u00e9e avec I. carnatica par Lieftinck en 1961(4)) l’autre, I. limbata (Selys) en Malaisie et \u00e0 Singapour (alors aux \u00ab\u00a0Indes Orientales\u00a0\u00bb).
Carnatica<\/strong> pourrait provenir selon R. Ngiam & M. Ng (5) de la r\u00e9gion anciennement appel\u00e9e Carnatique, au sud-est de l’Inde, actuellement Tamil Nadu et Andhra Pradesh. On sait que le sujet d\u00e9crit par Fabricius (Libellula carnatica) provenait d’Inde Orientale (\u00ab\u00a0Habitat in India orientali<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0).
Un \u00e9tat indien, juste \u00e0 l’ouest des deux pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment cit\u00e9s, s’appelle aujourd’hui le Karnataka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
