Je n’ai rencontr\u00e9 que quelques repr\u00e9sentants de ce genre et Ictinogomphus rapax est une premi\u00e8re pour moi, avec quelques r\u00e9serves comme on va le voir plus loin (Ictinogomphus rapax vs decoratus).
C’est un grand odonate spectaculaire, 52 mm pour l’abdomen, plus de 70 mm pour la longueur totale. Il a la r\u00e9putation d’\u00eatre agressif avec ses pairs et n’h\u00e9site pas \u00e0 consommer d’autres libellules.

Il est cens\u00e9 n’\u00eatre pr\u00e9sent que dans le nord de la Tha\u00eflande et ne peut y \u00eatre confondu qu’avec I. decoratus.

Et l\u00e0 est tout le probl\u00e8me… <\/em><\/strong>

La m\u00e9diocre photo ci-dessous est la seule que j’aie qui montre tous les d\u00e9tails d’identification \u00e0 la fois, tels qu’on peut les lire dans le seul document d\u00e9taill\u00e9, \u00ab\u00a0Range extension of Ictinogomphus decoratus (Selys, 1854) (Insecta: Odonata: Gomphidae) to India – 2018<\/em> \u00a0\u00bb que je suis parvenu \u00e0 d\u00e9nicher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 – En Tha\u00eflande, d’apr\u00e8s ce que j’ai compris, le diagnostic se fait essentiellement sur le fait que la coloration jaune du 8\u00b0 segment (S8), atteint (ou non) le sommet (la car\u00e8ne dorsale) de ce segment. Jaune ici, Pour I. decoratus, le sommet du segment reste \u00ab\u00a0noir\u00a0\u00bb.
2 – Pour I. rapax, une bande noire traverse la partie inf\u00e9rieure du front et s’\u00e9tend vers le haut en son milieu et divise la zone jaune en deux larges taches triangulaires. Malheureusement, toutes les photos des I. decoratus que je poss\u00e8de, identifi\u00e9es selon le crit\u00e8re en \u00ab\u00a01\u00a0\u00bb montrent \u00e9galement ces deux triangles, tr\u00e8s nettement au Cambodge<\/a> ou en Tha\u00eflande<\/a>, moins nettement en Malaisie<\/a> o\u00f9 la tache est plus petite.
3 – I. rapax montre sur la face lat\u00e9rale du thorax, une troisi\u00e8me bande jaune, incompl\u00e8te en bas, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 I. decoratus ne montre que du noir. Cependant, sur ma photo de I. decoratus de Tha\u00eflande, on devine une zone jaune \u00e0 travers l’aile.
4 – La bande ant\u00e9hum\u00e9rale est en point d’exclamation \u00e0 l’envers<\/em>, un point jaune en haut, suivi d’un trait jaune plus bas, pour I. rapax, limit\u00e9 au point pour I. decoratus. Pas de point pour I. decoratus pourtant sur ma photo du Cambodge, un point et un trait discret sur ma photo de Tha\u00eflande…
Ajoutons \u00e0 ces impr\u00e9cisions que dans \u00ab\u00a0Checklist of the dragonflies and damselflies (Insecta: Odonata) of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb (2), l’identification de I. decoratus dans le document (1) est invalid\u00e9e en 2020 (note 53) par le dernier auteur. On continue cependant \u00e0 utiliser ces crit\u00e8res !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il n’y a donc pas de description pr\u00e9cise et valide de cette esp\u00e8ce, et je me suis demand\u00e9 sur quoi sont bas\u00e9es les identifications qui sont tr\u00e8s nombreuses sur les sites de science participative comme iNaturalist ; \u00e0 vrai dire personne ne le sait, chacun dans son pays ou dans sa r\u00e9gion se conforme aux habitudes des plus savants<\/em> ou se rapporte au papier (1) qui s’est av\u00e9r\u00e9 non valide sur plusieurs points.
Comme je le disais plus haut, la diff\u00e9rence la plus commun\u00e9ment admise est l’extension ou non de la coloration jaune sur le S8 ; ce genre de d\u00e9tail ne pourrait \u00eatre s\u00e9rieusement retenu que si on ne trouvait pas tous les interm\u00e9diaires entre coloration et absence de coloration et si l’addition des autres crit\u00e8res permettait un tri rigoureux.
Plus inqui\u00e9tant encore est le fait qu’un autre Ictinogomphus, I. pertinax, ici au Vietnam<\/a>, ressemble \u00e0 s’y m\u00e9prendre \u00e0 ce que l’on entend commun\u00e9ment par I. rapax !

Chacune de ces trois esp\u00e8ces a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 ou pr\u00e9sente encore des sous-esp\u00e8ces, c’est dire la diversit\u00e9 que l’on rencontre. Pour moi, il est tr\u00e8s vraisemblable que ces trois esp\u00e8ces n’en fassent qu’une, si on ne trouve aucunes diff\u00e9rence structurelles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noter ci-dessus la r\u00e9duction de la bande ant\u00e9hum\u00e9rale \u00e0 2 points, et la tr\u00e8s faible tache jaune entre les deux larges bandes jaunes.

J’ai contact\u00e9 Oleg Kosterin, g\u00e9n\u00e9ticien et entomologiste russe sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 dans les Odonates (et particuli\u00e8rement de cette r\u00e9gion), le 29 d\u00e9cembre 2024 sur le sujet Ictinogomphus rapax vs decoratus, qui me dit se baser, pour l’instant, sur le crit\u00e8re de la coloration du S8, mais qu’il allait s’int\u00e9resser au probl\u00e8me et que pour lui, il \u00e9tait possible que I. rapax et I. decoratus soit la m\u00eame esp\u00e8ce. Il m’a appris que I. pertinax et I. rapax avaient d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9t\u00e9 synonymis\u00e9s en 1990 par by Chao<\/em>, ce que j’ai effectivement retrouv\u00e9 dans \u00ab\u00a0Odonata from the Cham Islands, off central Vietnam, 2015<\/em>, \u00a0\u00bb (3), mais que tout le monde pr\u00e9f\u00e9rait l’ignorer<\/em> !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donner la distribution de l’esp\u00e8ce n’a actuellement pas beaucoup de sens, sauf si l’on continue \u00e0 admettre que I. rapax, I. pertinax et I. decoratus sont des esp\u00e8ces diff\u00e9rentes. Ainsi l’IUCN Red List<\/a> donne I. rapax dans une grande partie de l’Inde jusqu’au Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un peu d\u2019\u00e9tymologie gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 Ian Endersby & Heinrich Fliedner (4)
\u2013 Ictinogomphus<\/strong> est int\u00e9ressant, car Rambur a cr\u00e9\u00e9 le genre en 1842 sous le nom d\u2019Ictinus<\/em>. Il ignorait (le Web \u00e9tait incomplet et tr\u00e8s lent \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque \ud83d\ude42 ) que ce nom \u00e9tait d\u00e9j\u00e0 utilis\u00e9 pour un col\u00e9opt\u00e8re et un oiseau. Ce genre d\u2019erreur est cens\u00e9 ne plus arriver, on a mis en place des institutions qui veillent au grain. Cowley en 1834 a rectifi\u00e9 et cr\u00e9\u00e9 le genre Ictinogomphus.
Il a combin\u00e9 le nom original Ictinus<\/em> avec gomphus<\/em>. Ictinus<\/em> vient d\u2019un mot grec signifiant cerf-volant<\/em> et Fliedner (2007), qui a apport\u00e9 une aide pr\u00e9cieuse \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tymologie des odonates, pense que la tr\u00e8s large taille de cet odonate a inspir\u00e9 ce nom. Cependant, et je suis tout \u00e0 fait de cet avis, Ian Endersby insiste sur le r\u00f4le des expansions ventrales du 8\u00b0 segment qui auraient pu sugg\u00e9rer ce nom de genre : et d\u2019ailleurs dans la description originale, Rambur ne peut manquer de les mentionner : \u00a0\u00bb Abdomen ayant une dilatation au bord lat\u00e9ral du huiti\u00e8me segment en form (sic) d\u2019\u00e9caille ou de membrane large, noire, semblable dans les deux sexes (ce que je ne valide pas, je pense que les expansions des m\u00e2les sont plus larges) \u00ab\u00a0.
Gomphus<\/em> vient d\u2019un mot grec qui signifie cheville<\/em> ou boulon<\/em>, en r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 la forme de l\u2019abdomen (de la plupart des esp\u00e8ces), qui ressemble \u00e0 une cheville pour assembler les bateaux<\/em>.
– Rapax<\/strong>, du latin rapax<\/em> pour pillard<\/em>, rapace<\/em>. Je ne peux fournir aucune explication, car Rambur (5) qui l’a d\u00e9crit en 1842, sous le nom de Diastatomma rapax<\/em> n’en fournit pas. Les sujets qu’il d\u00e9crit sont en collection, il ne les a jamais vus voler sur le terrain. A-t-il eu des informations quant \u00e0 l’agressivit\u00e9 du genre vis-\u00e0-vis des autres odonates, ce qui est av\u00e9r\u00e9 par de multiples t\u00e9moignages, je n’en ai aucune preuve. Mais dans le m\u00eame ouvrage, il d\u00e9crit un Ictinus praedator, un Ictinus vorax et un Ictinus ferox !<\/p>\n\n\n\n
