Ris cr\u00e9e le genre Hylaeothemis en 1909 pour y inclure deux esp\u00e8ces, Hylaeothemis clementia, \u00e0 partir d’un jeune m\u00e2le de Born\u00e9o, et H. fruhstorferi d’un sujet de Ceylan. Il pr\u00e9cise dans \u00ab\u00a0Libellulinen monographisch bearbeitet<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb (1) que l’abdomen mesure environ 23 mm (20 mm pour Asahina (2)) ce qui nous fait un tout petit Libellulidae d’\u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s 34 mm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Je l’avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 rencontr\u00e9 au Vietnam<\/a> et j’avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9mis des doutes sur son identification en le nommant Hylaeothemis cf. clementia.
Deux d\u00e9tails \u00e9vidents le s\u00e9parent de l’esp\u00e8ce d\u00e9crite par Ris, de Born\u00e9o (ici une photo<\/a> de Budak, du nord de Born\u00e9o) :
– la n\u00f4tre<\/em> ne montre qu’un tout petit trait clair, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 devrait se trouver une bande ant\u00e9hum\u00e9rale claire, s’\u00e9largissant en avant
– notre<\/em> sujet porte deux taches dorsales larges et grossi\u00e8rement ovales sur le 7\u00b0 segment (tr\u00e8s \u00e9vocatrices du genre Micrathyria en Am\u00e9rique) et pas de marque lat\u00e9rale sur le 6\u00b0 ; celui de Ris montre une continuit\u00e9 des taches abdominales lat\u00e9rales jusqu’au 7\u00b0 segment inclus, et pas de marques dorsales.
Si le premier d\u00e9tail pourrait \u00eatre consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme une variation g\u00e9ographique, on devrait trouver des interm\u00e9diaires entre les 2 formes, entre Born\u00e9o et le nord de la Tha\u00eflande, le Vietnam et m\u00eame le Yunnan, ce qui n’est pas le cas. Le 2\u00b0 d\u00e9tail, \u00e0 mon avis, permet d’exclure que ce soit la m\u00eame esp\u00e8ce, car il ne s’agit pas du tout d’une simple diminution ou extension d’un d\u00e9cor abdominal, mais d’une marque bien diff\u00e9rente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cette diff\u00e9rence est connue depuis longtemps et au moins depuis l’article d’Asahina (1992), inclut dans le livre d\u00e9j\u00e0 cit\u00e9 (2), dans lequel il montre les profils des deux sujets. Il montre \u00e9galement l’appareil g\u00e9nital secondaire des deux esp\u00e8ces, sous le S2, et les trouve ressemblant.
Ce n’est pas mon cas, quand je compare (les deux images ne sont pas \u00e0 la m\u00eame \u00e9chelle) ce qu’a dessin\u00e9 Ris, et ce que je peux tirer de la premi\u00e8re photo de cette page :<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous avons eu beaucoup de chance avec les femelles que nous avons observ\u00e9es deux jours diff\u00e9rents sur le m\u00eame site, plusieurs matures et une jeune (\u00e0 droite ci-dessous). Il faut de la chance, car que ce soit pour les m\u00e2les ou les femelles, que ce soit pour l’esp\u00e8ce nominale ou la n\u00f4tre<\/em>, elles sont rarement vues (3). Et, comme presque toujours pour les Libellulidae, les femelles sont encore plus discr\u00e8tes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Et pour ces femelles, on retrouve les m\u00eames diff\u00e9rences que pour les m\u00e2les, bande ant\u00e9hum\u00e9rale \u00e0 peine visible et tache dorsale sur S7, sauf le S6 porte une marque claire lat\u00e9rale, \u00e0 comparer avec cette photo<\/a> (du m\u00eame Budak, \u00e0 Sabah, au nord de Born\u00e9o).
La tache gris\u00e2tre sur la femelle ci-dessous \u00e0 droite est certainement un reste du substrat de ponte. On note l’\u00e9paisseur de l’abdomen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sa distribution, si l’on se r\u00e9f\u00e8re \u00e0 l’IUCN<\/a> qui confond les deux<\/em> esp\u00e8ces, comprend Born\u00e9o, la p\u00e9ninsule malaisienne, la Tha\u00eflande, le Laos, le Vietnam et, en Chine, le Yunnan et Hainan. Mais, une mise \u00e0 jour est survenue en 2019, donc apr\u00e8s que j’ai \u00e9crit la page sur l’esp\u00e8ce au Vietnam ; elle mentionne que les donn\u00e9es nordistes pourraient bien appartenir \u00e0 une autre esp\u00e8ce !
Ce qu’on rel\u00e8ve sur iNaturalist montre que le partage entre les deux esp\u00e8ces se fait entre la p\u00e9nisule malaisienne et la Tha\u00eflande, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 se trouve une importante lacune de distribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous les avons rencontr\u00e9s tous, m\u00e2les, femelles immatures et matures, accouplement, pr\u00e8s d’une petite rivi\u00e8re tr\u00e8s encaiss\u00e9e \u00e0 ce niveau, dont les rives bois\u00e9es \u00e9taient tr\u00e8s difficilement praticables, tr\u00e8s pentues, sorte de parcours du combattant en raison d’une grande quantit\u00e9 de bambous d\u00e9vers\u00e9s \u00e0 cet endroit et de nombreux tuyaux d’irrigation.
Tous ensemble, nous avons cherch\u00e9 \u00e0 approcher cet accouplement, les premiers sujets que nous avons rencontr\u00e9s. Et cela n’a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 sans mal pour certains<\/a> qui se sont enfonc\u00e9s dans l’amoncellement de bambous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong> (4)
Hyleaothemis<\/strong>, d’un mot grec signifiant \u00ab\u00a0appartenant \u00e0 la for\u00eat\u00a0\u00bb et de Themis. Themis n\u2019a jamais \u00e9t\u00e9 un nom de libellule \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9tabli comme \u00e9l\u00e9ment dans les noms de genres de libellules par Hagen (1861), lorsqu\u2019il a d\u00fb nommer de nombreux nouveaux genres nord-am\u00e9ricains. Son mod\u00e8le \u00e9tait les noms en \u2013etrum sugg\u00e9r\u00e9s, pour les nouveaux genres de libellules, par Newman (1833) (par exemple Orthetrum, voir p. 113). Mais comme les noms d\u2019esp\u00e8ces adjectivaux s\u2019ils \u00e9taient transf\u00e9r\u00e9s de Libellula, \u00e0 un genre en \u2013etrum, devaient \u00eatre chang\u00e9s de genre en neutre, Hagen a \u00e9vit\u00e9 de tels changements en choisissant l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ment f\u00e9minin \u2013themis comme deuxi\u00e8me partie des nouveaux noms (voir Hagen 1888), signifiant simplement \u00ab genre de libellule \u00bb. Il a probablement \u00e9t\u00e9 inspir\u00e9 dans son choix par des noms de dieux, dans la nomenclature comme Nehalennia ou Cora.
Themis est un excellent choix, c’est la d\u00e9esse de la justice et de l’ordre, ce qui s’applique tr\u00e8s bien \u00e0 une classification.
Ris, cr\u00e9ant ce genre, \u00e9crit que ces esp\u00e8ces sont des \u00ab\u00a0habitants de la foret\u00a0\u00bb.
Clementia<\/strong> est un hommage \u00e0 un certain Monsieur Cl\u00e9ment<\/em> (avec un accent sur le \u00ab\u00a0e\u00a0\u00bb dans le texte de Ris), d\u00e9couvreur de l’esp\u00e8ce ou ayant seulement eu un r\u00f4le d’interm\u00e9diaire en fournissant l’esp\u00e8ce \u00e0 Selys, on ne le saura sans doute jamais.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
