Cette unique photo, la seule que j’ose montrer, est notre unique rencontre avec Periaeschna nocturnalis. Cette femelle en ponte s’est pos\u00e9e et a rapidement d\u00e9coll\u00e9 \u00e0 plusieurs reprises alors que nous remontions une rivi\u00e8re, dans un tunnel de v\u00e9g\u00e9tation.
Nous avons longtemps attendu qu’elle revienne, pour moi, en photographiant de tr\u00e8s pr\u00e8s un Aristocypha fenestrella, en vain…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Periaeschna<\/a>

L’esp\u00e8ce a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9crite par Fraser (1) qui pr\u00e9cise que l’abdomen de son sujet mesurait 48 mm. On trouve des valeurs tr\u00e8s voisines dans Asahina (2) avec 50 mm. Mes photos ne permettent pas de d\u00e9duire pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment la longueur totale de cet Aeshnidae, mais sur le site Odonates of China<\/em>, bas\u00e9e sur les 2 volumes de Dragonflies and Damselflies of China<\/em> (3) on lit qu’il mesure entre 63 et 68 mm.
L’esp\u00e8ce est rare, rarement photographi\u00e9e en tout cas, moins de 20 observations sur iNaturalist \u00e0 ce jour.

Son identification repose sur ses motifs thoraciques et abdominaux, notamment la ligne jaune sur la face dorsale de l’abdomen (peu visible sur cette photo…).

Cette femelle pondait sur un tronc en d\u00e9composition (entre les 2 t\u00eates ci-dessous !), au-dessus de la Mae Klang Rive, \u00e0 environ 1300 m\u00e8tres d’altitude. Il semble qu’elle ponde \u00e9galement dans la terre des rives. Pour Fraser, c’est une esp\u00e8ce cr\u00e9pusculaire et comme pour de nombreux Aeshnidae, ils sont surtout actifs l’apr\u00e8s-midi ; nous l’avons rencontr\u00e9 \u00e0 15 heures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’esp\u00e8ce est certainement pr\u00e9sente au nord-est de l’Inde, au Myanmar (sans doute au Bhoutan et au N\u00e9pal), en Tha\u00eflande, au Laos, au Vietnam<\/a> et dans le sud de la Chine.
IUCN Red List<\/a> (pas tr\u00e8s \u00e0 jour, 2010).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong><\/span>
Periaeschna<\/strong> (Martin, 1909), du grec peri<\/em>, pour autour<\/em>, qui induit, en pr\u00e9fixe, une notion de proximit\u00e9 avec ce qui suit, dans notre cas une parent\u00e9 avec les autres Aeshnidae. Aeschna est un cas particulier dans l\u2019\u00e9tymologie des noms d\u2019odonates. Il est ici \u00e9crit dans sa version\u00a0corrig\u00e9e, et on a en Europe, l\u2019habitude de l\u2019\u00e9crire sans \u00ab\u00a0c\u00a0\u00bb, la version de Fabricius (1775) qui a cr\u00e9\u00e9 le nom de genre Aeshna.
On suppose, car il ne l\u2019a pas pr\u00e9cis\u00e9, que Fabricius a form\u00e9 ce nom depuis un mot grec signifiant\u00a0d\u00e9figurer<\/em>\u00a0ou\u00a0ternir<\/em>\u00a0(pourquoi, c\u2019est une autre \u00e9nigme ?) ; mais Fabricius est un puriste et on ne peut expliquer cette absence de \u00ab\u00a0c \u00a0\u00bb que par une erreur de transcription ou une erreur typographique.
L\u2019absence de ce \u00ab\u00a0c\u00a0\u00bb n\u2019est rest\u00e9e la norme que pour le genre Aeshna et tous les \u00ab\u00a0compos\u00e9s\u00a0\u00bb l\u2019ont int\u00e9gr\u00e9.
Nocturnalis<\/strong>, du latin nocturnalis<\/em> d\u00e9riv\u00e9 de nocturnus<\/em> qui signifie nocturne<\/em> souligne son caract\u00e8re cr\u00e9pusculaire et Fraser (1) \u00e9crit : \u00ab\u00a0Beaten up from jungle during the day and evidently a crepuscular insect<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
