Le genre Rhyothemis est un des plus spectaculaires parmi les Libellulidae ; il compte vingt-trois esp\u00e8ces d\u00e9crites, au moins une autre est connue et non d\u00e9crite. De tr\u00e8s nombreuses sous-esp\u00e8ces (et synonymies) sont \u00e9tablies<\/em>, en particulier en Asie, et surtout dans les tr\u00e8s nombreuses iles des Philippines et de l’Indon\u00e9sie, ce qui laisse supposer que de nouvelles esp\u00e8ces seront isol\u00e9es. Ainsi, R. phyllis compte plus d’une douzaine de sous-esp\u00e8ces !
J’en ai rencontr\u00e9 12 sur les trois continents sur lesquels ils se distribuent, soit l’Afrique, l’Asie et l’Oc\u00e9anie.

De taille moyenne, ils ont en commun des ailes color\u00e9es aux reflets iris\u00e9s et des ailes post\u00e9rieures particuli\u00e8rement larges \u00e0 la base leur permettant de rester tr\u00e8s longtemps en vol. On les observe parfois en nombre, se nourrissant d’essaim de petites proies, \u00e0 une dizaine de m\u00e8tres su sol. Ils plaisent sur les eaux stagnantes bien v\u00e9g\u00e9talis\u00e9es, lacs, \u00e9tangs, mares, foss\u00e9s ou tourbi\u00e8res.
Certaines de ces esp\u00e8ces sont de temps en temps confondues avec des papillons dont elles empruntent la coloration alaire et le vol dit \u00ab\u00a0papillonnant\u00a0\u00bb ce qui leur vaut le nom g\u00e9n\u00e9rique anglais de Flutterer<\/em> (to flutter = papillonner). L’une d’entre elles, Rhyothemis fuliginosa se voit m\u00eame nomm\u00e9e Butterfly flutterer<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/span><\/strong>
Dans\u00a0Rhyothemis<\/strong><\/em> (Hagen, 1867) on reconnait le nom de la d\u00e9esse de L\u2019Ordre et de la Justice (1), Themis, fr\u00e9quemment utilis\u00e9 encore apr\u00e8s Hagen, pour nommer des Libellulidae, par imitation de ce que faisaient les anciens en utilisant des noms issus de la mythologie. La premi\u00e8re partie du nom vient sans doute, selon Fliedner, d\u2019une roche, la Rhyolite, d\u00e9couverte en 1861 et r\u00e9cemment nomm\u00e9e, dont le nom est compos\u00e9 de deux mots grecs signifiant \u2013couler<\/em>\u00a0et \u2013pierre<\/em>, cette roche magmatique montrant des bandes ou couches semblant avoir coul\u00e9 les unes sur les autres. Quand on regarde la Rhyolite<\/a>, cette explication est un peu surprenante pour certaines esp\u00e8ces.
Hagen (2) d\u00e9crit tr\u00e8s succinctement ce nouveau genre \u00e0 la fin d’un opuscule consacr\u00e9 aux odonates de Cuba (!) et ne donne aucun d\u00e9tail sur le choix de ce nom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
