Le genre Rhodothemis ne comprend que 4 esp\u00e8ces : j’avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 rencontr\u00e9 Rhodothemis rufa au Cambodge<\/a>, et plus tard R. lieftincki en Australie, ce sont d’ailleurs ceux qui ont la distribution g\u00e9ographique la plus importante, R. nigripes et R. mauritsi \u00e9tant confin\u00e9s \u00e0 l’Indon\u00e9sie, et le dernier uniquement \u00e0 la Nouvelle-Guin\u00e9e.<\/p>\n

Il ressemble \u00e9norm\u00e9ment \u00e0 R. lieftincki et les deux esp\u00e8ces ont d’abord \u00e9t\u00e9 confondues, alors qu’il est maintenant acquis que leur aire de distribution ne se chevauchent pas. Dans Kalkman & Orr, 2014 (1), on trouve une cl\u00e9 qui permet d’identifier les m\u00e2les des quatre esp\u00e8ces et on peut ainsi s\u00e9parer ces deux Rhodothemis par le nombre d’\u00e9pines port\u00e9es par les f\u00e9murs post\u00e9rieurs ; 20 \u00e0 27 petites \u00e9pines et 2 \u00e0 3 grandes pour R. lieftincki, 8 \u00e0 12 petites et 4 \u00e0 5 grandes pour R. rufa. Ce que je me suis amus\u00e9 \u00e0 v\u00e9rifier sur mes photos ci-dessous :<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’abdomen et le thorax sont rouges, sans marques noires. En Tha\u00eflande et en Asie, il est possible de le confondre avec les autres Libellulidae rouges, comme Crocothemis servilia<\/a> (pattes rouges, ligne noire sur l’abdomen !), Urothemis signata<\/a> (marques noires sur les derniers segments !), Aethriamanta brevipennis<\/a> (genoux rouges, thorax sombre !) voire Orthetrum testaceum<\/a>. Mais les yeux des trois premiers sont bleus dans leurs parties post\u00e9rieures et inf\u00e9rieures, le quatri\u00e8me n’a pas les yeux rouges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il est aussi proche des Erythemis am\u00e9ricains (ici Erythemis mithroides<\/a>).
Ces ressemblances expliquent sans doute pourquoi il a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9crit \u00e0 de nombreuses reprises sous des noms diff\u00e9rents, comme le souligne Fraser, dans Indian Dragonflies<\/em> (2) :<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fraser lui donne une longueur totale de 44 mm, ce qui est en accord avec ce que l’on lit dans Ngiam & Ng (3) qui donnent 41 \u00e0 44 mm. Mais dans Odonata of China<\/a>, il atteint 49 mm ; il faut r\u00e9aliser que ce n’est que 5 mm de plus, mais cela repr\u00e9sente 12.5% de plus que la taille maximum enregistr\u00e9e en Malaisie et 20% par rapport \u00e0 la taille la plus faible. Cela reste tout de m\u00eame compatible avec les variations de taille que l’on rencontre… pour les humains !
On le contacte sur les mares, \u00e9tangs, les r\u00e9servoirs, dans les parties bien v\u00e9g\u00e9talis\u00e9es des berges, au soleil. Nous ne l’avons rencontr\u00e9 qu’\u00e0 Chiang Mai, en particulier sur la mare<\/a> devant la facult\u00e9 de Technologie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On voit tr\u00e8s bien sur les femelles un d\u00e9tail de coloration qui dispara\u00eet lors du vieillissement des m\u00e2les : un curieux d\u00e9cor blanc \u00ab\u00a0embo\u00eet\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb sur la face dorsale du thorax, qui se prolonge entre les ailes jusqu’\u00e0 la face dorsale de l’abdomen. On en devine encore les deux courtes bandes lat\u00e9rales sur les m\u00e2les, sur les deux premi\u00e8res photos de la page.
On retrouve exactement ce type de d\u00e9cor sur les jeunes m\u00e2les<\/a> et les femelles<\/a> R. lieftincki, en Australie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Je trouve ce genre tr\u00e8s int\u00e9ressant pour la diff\u00e9rence \u00e9norme entre m\u00e2les et femelles matures, et aussi pour l’int\u00e9r\u00eat esth\u00e9tique des femelles qui montrent une coloration tr\u00e8s typ\u00e9e, pas du tout une p\u00e2le version des m\u00e2les, comme souvent chez les Libellulidae. Mais, actuellement, on ne sait pas s\u00e9parer les femelles des diff\u00e9rentes esp\u00e8ces.

Sa distribution s’\u00e9tend de l’Inde et du Sri Lanka au sud de la Chine, \u00e0 Hong Kong et aux Philippines, pour atteindre au sud la Malaisie et l’Indon\u00e9sie, en passant par le Myanmar, Vietnam, le Cambodge…
IUCN Red List<\/a>.

De l’Inde \u00e0 Singapour, au moins, on l’appelle Common Redbolt, Spine-legged redbolt, Rufous marsh glider ; si le \u00ab\u00a0bolt\u00a0\u00bb est \u00e9tonnant, il signifie \u00ab\u00a0boulon\u00a0\u00bb en anglais, je pr\u00e9f\u00e9rerais le dernier nom vernaculaire \u00ab\u00a0planeur des mares\u00a0\u00bb s’il n’\u00e9tait pas qualifi\u00e9 de roux (rufous) ! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong><\/span>
Rhodothemis<\/strong> (1) est compos\u00e9 du grec \u2013rhodos<\/em>\u00a0pour \u2013rose<\/em>\u00a0et de\u00a0Themis<\/em>. Themis, \u2013 d\u00e9esse grecque de l\u2019ordre et de la justice, a \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9 de nombreuses fois depuis Hagen (1861), et Ris a suivi la mode en 1909 quand il a cr\u00e9\u00e9 ce genre. Le nom de la d\u00e9esse de l\u2019ordre est particuli\u00e8rement bien adapt\u00e9 \u00e0 la taxonomie, science qui vise \u00e0 d\u00e9crire et ordonner les familles, genres et esp\u00e8ces.
Mais, pourquoi \u00e9voquer la couleur rose pour des sujets rouges (tous les Rhodothemis sont rouges), cela reste un myst\u00e8re. \u00c0 moins qu\u2019il n\u2019ait eu en main que des sujets en cours de maturation\u2026
Rufa<\/strong>, du latin rufus<\/em> qui signifie roux<\/em>. Rambur insiste beaucoup sur cette couleur dans sa description (4) et rufa en est m\u00eame le premier mot : \u00ab\u00a0t\u00eate ayant la face rousse…, thorax roux…., …. abdomen roux, …. pattes rousses<\/em>.\u00a0\u00bb Il est vraisemblable que Rambur ait eu en sa possession un sujet mal conserv\u00e9 (comme presque toujours \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque), sans doute pas un jeune, car s’il d\u00e9crit la bande interalaire centrale qui se prolonge sur l’abdomen, il ne mentionne pas les deux taches claires grossi\u00e8rement triangulaires, plus lat\u00e9rales sur le thorax. Il faut noter que le terme \u00ab\u00a0rufa\u00a0\u00bb appara\u00eet tr\u00e8s souvent dans les descriptions de Rambur pour ses \u00ab\u00a0Libellula\u00a0\u00bb ; pour beaucoup la coloration rouge a \u00e9t\u00e9 alt\u00e9r\u00e9e en marron ou roux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
