Je ne tergiverserai pas, Palpopleura sexmaculata m\u00e2le est un des plus charmants petits Libellulidae au monde. Je l’avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 rencontr\u00e9 au Vietnam<\/a>, mais c’est un plaisir de l’observer sauter<\/em> de fleurs en fleurs, de brin d’herbe en brin d’herbe, minuscule et si rapide. Il ne mesure qu’entre 24 et 28 mm selon les sources.
J’avais \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s surpris de d\u00e9couvrir un membre de ce genre, en 2012, dans les montagnes du nord-Vietnam ; je connaissais le genre Palpopleura en Afrique o\u00f9 il compte six esp\u00e8ces, mais elles sont toutes subsahariennes. Que vient faire un membre de ce genre \u00e0 des milliers de kilom\u00e8tres de ses cousins ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il est d’ailleurs extr\u00eamement proche de Palpopleura jucunda (que je n’ai jamais vu, voici un lien vers iNaturalist<\/a>), ce qu’avait not\u00e9 Ris (1), qui note \u00ab\u00a0qu’il y a un \u00e9norme foss\u00e9 entre les aires de distribution de ces deux esp\u00e8ces<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb et juge cependant qu’il faut en faire deux esp\u00e8ces valides.
Ce qu’\u00e9crit Selys dans \u00ab\u00a0Odonates recueillis \u00e0 Madagascar, aux iles Mascareignes et Comores\u00a0\u00bb (2) souligne cette ressemblance :\u00a0\u00bbM. Rambur d\u00e9crit, il est vrai, sous le nom de jucunda une esp\u00e8ce du Cap, mais je crois que la patrie est erron\u00e9e, car je ne puis la bien distinguer de la P. sexmaculata de Chine<\/em> \u00ab\u00a0.
Il y a cependant quelques diff\u00e9rences mineures ; P. juncunda m\u00e2le porte des taches alaires ambr\u00e9es, et la sinuosit\u00e9 (la concavit\u00e9) de la veine costale de l’aile ant\u00e9rieure (\u00e0 mi-chemin entre la base de l’aile et le nodus) est tr\u00e8s marqu\u00e9e, alors qu’elle est \u00e0 peine visible pour P. sexmaculata (on la devine ci-dessous). Le r\u00f4le ou l’origine de cette sinuosit\u00e9 commune \u00e0 certains Palpopleurinae (Diastatops, Zenithoptera, Palpoleura) est discut\u00e9e par Michel Papazian qui met en \u00e9vidence une relation entre la forme des yeux et cette d\u00e9formation dans une optique de thermor\u00e9gulation (3). Il note, ce qui est vraiment \u00e9tonnant, une corr\u00e9lation entre l’\u00e9tendue de la coloration noire et la profondeur de la concavit\u00e9.
La maculation des ailes des femelles, aux ailes post\u00e9rieures ou aux post\u00e9rieures et aux ant\u00e9rieures sous forme de taches noires, semble assez variable pour les deux esp\u00e8ces. Mais comme souvent, l’\u00e9tendue des marques alaires est variable d’un individu \u00e0 l’autre, et des formes, m\u00e2les ou femelles, plus ou moins sombres, sont largement explicables par des populations qui \u00e9voluent \u00e0 grande distance.
La g\u00e9n\u00e9tique pourra sans doute trancher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le m\u00eame Ris, dans ses Libellulinen<\/em> (4) rapporte les propos de Fraser [ \u00e0 propos des femelles et des m\u00e2les immatures] :\u00a0\u00bbM. Fraser a \u00e9galement fait les remarques int\u00e9ressantes suivantes sur les habitudes de ce bel insecte : \u00ab L’imago a un vol bas en cercles, s’arr\u00eatant souvent sur sommets des brins d’herbe et en raison de sa couleur jaune, ressemble exactement \u00e0 un insecte hym\u00e9nopt\u00e8re. Son vol est surtout comparable \u00e0 celui d’une Pyrale de la pimprenelle (Zygaena filipendulae). Une fois que le m\u00e2le a d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 une pruinescence bleue, cette ressemblance dispara\u00eet, car le bleu est tr\u00e8s visible pendant le vol.<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0
Ci-dessous, la coloration d’un m\u00e2le immature explique cette ressemblance avec un hym\u00e9nopt\u00e8re.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les femelles sont tout aussi mignonnes et leurs ailes post\u00e9rieures sont presque enti\u00e8rement ambr\u00e9es, mais d\u00e9pourvues de tache basale noire. Il faut noter la spectaculaire largeur de leur abdomen.

Nous les avons rencontr\u00e9s sur ce que je pense \u00eatre de tr\u00e8s anciennes rizi\u00e8res<\/a>, envahie d’herbes et de fleurs, peupl\u00e9e de plusieurs esp\u00e8ces d’odonates et de nombreux papillons, \u00e0 environ 1400 m\u00e8tres d’altitude. Dans le nord-ouest de l’Inde, on le contacte sur les mares et les zones calmes des rivi\u00e8res ou ruisseaux aux berges bien v\u00e9g\u00e9talis\u00e9es (5).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sa distribution s’\u00e9tend de l’Afghanistan \u00e0 la Chine, passant bien s\u00fbr par le nord de la Tha\u00eflande et du Vietnam, mais il est absent de Malaisie.
Celle de Palpopleura juncunda s’arr\u00eate au sud du Sahara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Etymologie <\/strong><\/span>(6)
Palpopleura<\/strong>\u00a0; la premi\u00e8re partie du nom de genre vient du verbe latin palpo<\/em> qui signifie t\u00e2ter, toucher, caresse<\/em>r, palper<\/em>\u2026 et il n’y a pas d’explication vraiment satisfaisante. Pleura en grec signifie c\u00f4t\u00e9<\/em>\u00a0ou\u00a0c\u00f4te<\/em>\u00a0et\u00a0pleura<\/em>\u00a0pourrait \u00eatre un \u00e9quivalent du latin\u00a0costa<\/em>, car Rambur, cr\u00e9ateur du genre, insiste sur l\u2019encoche caract\u00e9ristique de la nervure costale (la veine qui fait le bord d\u2019aile). \u00c0 moins que Rambur ne sugg\u00e8re simplement que le bord ant\u00e9rieur de l’aile est d\u00e9form\u00e9 et concave, comme ayant \u00e9t\u00e9 touch\u00e9…
Sexmaculata<\/strong>, du latin sex<\/em> pour six<\/em> et maculata<\/em> pour tache<\/em>, ceci en r\u00e9f\u00e9rence aux trois taches noires port\u00e9es par chaque aile ant\u00e9rieure.

En anglais, on lui donne le nom de Asian widow ou Blue-tailed yellow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
