Je ne m’attendais pas \u00e0 trouver cet Orthemis sp. ou Antillean skimmer et j’ai donc demand\u00e9 et obtenu la confirmation de Dennis Paulson. Cela fait des ann\u00e9es, sans doute depuis J\u00fcrg de Marmels,1988 (1) au moins, que l’on sait qu’une esp\u00e8ce des Grandes Antilles n’est ni Orthemis ferruginea, ni Orthemis discolor. On en trouve une premi\u00e8re confirmation par Nick Donelly en 1995 (2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c0 Cuba, on ne peut le confondre qu’avec O. ferruginea, mais les jeunes m\u00e2les<\/a> (ici au Mexique) et les femelles de cette esp\u00e8ce montrent beaucoup plus de lignes claires, sur la face lat\u00e9rale du thorax, qui sont ici tr\u00e8s discr\u00e8tes. O. ferruginea montre de plus une marque noire au-dessus des pattes moyennes, absente pour cet Orthemis sp. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On voit nettement sur ce sujet, les yeux et la face rouge, alors que cette coloration est plus violac\u00e9e, avec le front m\u00e9tallique pour O. ferruginea<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dennis Paulson, dans son Dragonflies and Damselflies of the East<\/em> (1), lui consacre une rubrique, sans lui donner d’autre nom, et je ne sais pas pourquoi personne ne s’est jamais donn\u00e9 la peine d’en faire une description formelle et de le baptiser. Et c’est tr\u00e8s regrettable, car Orthemis macrostigma pr\u00e9sent dans les Petites Antilles, dont Guadeloupe et Martinique, se fait aussi appeler Antillean skimmer.
Il nous dit qu’il mesure 50 \u00e0 55 mm et que son comportement est tr\u00e8s proche de celui avec lequel il a \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s longuement confondu, O. ferruginea ; les m\u00e2les territoriaux se plaisent sur les mares, \u00e9tangs et lacs, en milieu ouvert, l’accouplement se produit en vol et les femelles pondent \u00e0 quelques dizaines de centim\u00e8tres de la rive projetant leurs \u0153ufs avec des gouttelettes d’eau \u00e0 la limite de la berge (ici O. discolor<\/a>, au Panama, se livrant \u00e0 cet exercice).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On le rencontre essentiellement des Grandes Antilles aux Iles Vierges, et peut-\u00eatre localement sur les c\u00f4tes de l’Am\u00e9rique Centrale ou de l’Am\u00e9rique du Sud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie <\/strong><\/span>
Orthemis<\/strong>, du grec\u00a0ortho<\/em>, \u2013droit<\/em>\u00a0et de Themis, la d\u00e9esse de L\u2019Ordre et de la Justice, fr\u00e9quemment utilis\u00e9 pour nommer des Libellulidae, par imitation de ce que faisaient les anciens en utilisant des noms issus de la mythologie. On lit dans Hagen (1861) qui a cr\u00e9\u00e9 le genre :\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0Le premier secteur du triangle rectiligne\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0, une caract\u00e9ristique du genre.
Antillean<\/strong> signifie tout simplement \u00ab\u00a0des Antilles\u00a0\u00bb en anglais.
Skimmer<\/strong> est le nom g\u00e9n\u00e9rique des Orthemis en anglais. To skim<\/em>, signifie survoler, soulignant leur comportement au-dessus des mares et \u00e9tangs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
