Brachygonia oculata est un petit Libellulidae tr\u00e8s spectaculaire, que nous avons rencontr\u00e9 \u00e0 plusieurs reprises, toujours en limite de for\u00eat mar\u00e9cageuse ou de tourbi\u00e8re en for\u00eat, pour les individus m\u00e2les matures.
Il est impossible de le confondre avec une autre esp\u00e8ce en raison de la tache blanc lumineux de la face dorsale de son abdomen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il montre de gros yeux et ne mesure que 21 \u00e0 24 mm (1).
Ci-dessous, l’individu de droite est sans doute jeune, avec le thorax encore plus blanc que jaune et des yeux largement verts cap\u00e9s de rouge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Son habitat se limite \u00e0 la for\u00eat ou \u00e0 ses abords imm\u00e9diats, dans des tourbi\u00e8res, des zones mar\u00e9cageuses, voire le long de ruisseaux paresseux aux fonds couverts de d\u00e9bris et de feuilles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On note que la pruinosit\u00e9 blanche s’\u00e9tend pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment sur la face dorsale de segments 3, 4 et 5. Pourtant, Kirby qui a cr\u00e9 le genre Brachygonia (2) et prend pour type le Tetrathemis oculata de Brauer, \u00e9crit :\u00a0\u00bbIn all the specimens of the male the abdominal segments 2 (behind the carina), 3, and 4 to the middle are dusted with pale blue. Sur tous les sp\u00e9cimens de m\u00e2les, les segments abdominaux 2 (derri\u00e8re la car\u00e8ne), 3 et 4 jusqu’au milieu, sont poudr\u00e9s de bleu p\u00e2le\u00a0\u00bb. Sans doute un lapsus calami<\/em>, car Kirby, on peut lui faire confiance, connaissait tr\u00e8s bien l’anatomie des odonates !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les femelles, ci-dessus, n’ont pas de pruinosit\u00e9 sur l’abdomen et sont beaucoup moins spectaculaires. On retrouve sensiblement la m\u00eame coloration sur le thorax, mais les yeux sont rouges assez vif au-dessus, verts au-dessous, comme le jeune m\u00e2le montr\u00e9 plus haut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La photo ci-dessous est typique de ce qui arrive avec ces odonates qui vivent en for\u00eat, \u00e0 l’ombre ; toutes les photos sont faites au flash et pour ajuster l’\u00e9clairement, le flash \u00e9met un micro \u00e9clair qui permet au capteur de mesurer quelle devra \u00eatre la puissance de l’\u00e9clair principal pour exposer correctement la sc\u00e8ne. De nombreux odonates de for\u00eat sont sensibles \u00e0 ce premier \u00e9clair et d\u00e9collent tr\u00e8s bri\u00e8vement, l’\u00e9clair principal qui suit le premier de quelques millisecondes les trouve en vol. Si on r\u00e9p\u00e8te la prise de vue, la libellule peut d\u00e9coller et se reposer 4, 5, 6, 10 fois… et toutes les photos sont g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement floues. Le plus souvent, les odonates s’habituent et finissent par rester tranquilles.
Nous ne sommes souvent qu’\u00e0 quelques dizaines de centim\u00e8tres et je me suis toujours demand\u00e9 comment ils parvenaient \u00e0 voler correctement apr\u00e8s de tels \u00e9blouissements r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9s !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On rencontre l’esp\u00e8ce depuis le sud de la Tha\u00eflande, \u00e0 travers la p\u00e9ninsule malaisienne, jusqu’\u00e0 Born\u00e9o (Sarawak, Brunei, Sabah et Kalimantan) et Sumatra.

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong><\/span>
Brachygonia<\/strong> (Kirby, 1889) du grec brachy<\/em>, pour court,<\/em> et du grec ancien gonia<\/em> pour g\u00e9n\u00e9ration (dont on a fait gonade<\/em>) certainement en rapport avec l’appareil g\u00e9nital secondaire peu pro\u00e9minent sous le deuxi\u00e8me segment. Kirby \u00e9crit : \u00ab\u00a0appendages of the second segment distinct, not very prominent.<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0.
Oculata<\/strong> ; je n’ai pas r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 trouver la description originale de Brauer, o\u00f9 il d\u00e9crit l’esp\u00e8ce sous le nom de Tetrathemis oculata. Oculatus, en latin, signifie pourvu ou dot\u00e9 d’un \u0153il<\/em> ou d’yeux<\/em>, sans doute pour souligner les yeux surdimensionn\u00e9s de cette esp\u00e8ce.

Les anglo-saxons l’appellent tout simplement Pixie<\/em> (lutin<\/em>). Et, je le d\u00e9couvre avec cette esp\u00e8ce, les Malaisiens ont d\u00e9fini des noms malais pour les esp\u00e8ces qui peuplent leur territoire (3) ; celui de notre esp\u00e8ce est Penyiring Dewi Oren<\/em>. Je dois aussi mentionner qu’il n’y a que 9 entr\u00e9es sur un c\u00e9l\u00e8bre moteur de recherche pour ce nom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
