Cela faisait une douzaine d’ann\u00e9es que je r\u00eavais de revoir Nannophya pygmaea (1), sans doute le plus petit Libellulidae connu.
Les m\u00e2les matures sont absolument magnifiques dans leur habit rouge qui contraste avec le vert des herbes qui les entourent et qu’ils choisissent comme perchoir. Ils aiment le soleil, ce qui n’est pas le cas des femelles et des immatures, ils sont vifs et rapides, pas trop difficiles \u00e0 approcher.

Huit Nannophya sont d\u00e9crits, les trois derniers seulement en 2020, l’un au Laos, l’autre en Australie, le dernier en Cor\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il est impossible de les confondre avec une autre esp\u00e8ce, \u00e0 Born\u00e9o ou ailleurs. Ils sont d’un rouge \u00e9blouissant, qui donne d’ailleurs bien du mal aux appareils photos, qui perdent tous les d\u00e9tails dans cette lumi\u00e8re si particuli\u00e8re. Et si petits qu’on confond les m\u00e2les immatures et les femelles avec des hym\u00e9nopt\u00e8res ou des dipt\u00e8res.
Rambur \u00e9crit qu’il ne fait pas 2 centim\u00e8tres, Ngiam et Ng (2) lui donnent une longueur totale de 16 \u00e0 17 mm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La nervation est tr\u00e8s peu dense et la base des ailes est ambr\u00e9e.

Comme de nombreux Libellulidae, c’est un adepte de \u00ab\u00a0l’ob\u00e9lisque\u00a0\u00bb, posture verticale de thermor\u00e9gulation, qui lui permet limiter la surface de son corps qu’il expose au soleil.

Nous l’avons rencontr\u00e9 en bordure de for\u00eat humide, voire inond\u00e9e, en limite des tourbi\u00e8res mar\u00e9cageuses, dans des zones ouvertes, pour les m\u00e2les matures. Les femelles sont plus discr\u00e8tes et nous ne les avons vues qu’en for\u00eat ou \u00e0 l’ombre de ses limites, comme les m\u00e2les immatures.
C’est sur cet espace inond\u00e9 entre buisson et chemin<\/a> que nous avons rencontr\u00e9 nos premiers Scarlet dwarf (ou Scarlet Pigmy) du s\u00e9jour, terrain qu’ils partageaient avec Ceriagrion cerinorubellum, Agriocnemis femina et Acisoma panorpoides.

Il fait partie de ces esp\u00e8ces dans lesquelles les m\u00e2les peuvent \u00eatre territoriaux, surveiller et dominer un territoire. Ou, s’embusquer \u00e0 faible distance et intercepter les femelles venant \u00e0 l’eau, une strat\u00e9gie sans doute moins co\u00fbteuse \u00e9nerg\u00e9tiquement, mais qui s’av\u00e8re en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral moins fructueuse (3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les m\u00e2les immatures sont beiges et blancs pour l’abdomen, moins spectaculaires que les m\u00e2les matures et aussi moins que les femelles que je trouve somptueuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mais quand ils sont en maturation, ils se parent d’un spectaculaire m\u00e9nage de couleurs :<\/p>\n\n\n\n

M\u00eames jeunes comme celles-ci dessous, l’abdomen des femelles montre une spectaculaire alternance d’anneaux clairs et sombres. Leurs yeux sont encore clairs, leurs ailes brillantes, ce qui t\u00e9moigne de leur jeune \u00e2ge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Je ne l’ai contact\u00e9 qu’une seule autre fois, en Malaisie<\/a>.

On le rencontre de la Nouvelle-Guin\u00e9e \u00e0 l’Indon\u00e9sie, \u00e0 Born\u00e9o, aux Philippines, dans le sud de la Tha\u00eflande et du Vietnam, au sud-est de la Chine et \u00e0 Ta\u00efwan, jusqu’en Cor\u00e9e et au Japon.
Je mets ici le lien vers L’IUCN Red List<\/a>, en esp\u00e9rant qu’un jour les donn\u00e9es valides soient mises \u00e0 jour, car pour l’instant, j’ai l’impression que la distribution est trait\u00e9e pour le genre Nannophya et non l’esp\u00e8ce pygmaea<\/em>. Ou alors, et ce serait tr\u00e8s surprenant, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 int\u00e9gr\u00e9 cette tr\u00e8s curieuse donn\u00e9e que l’on trouve sur le site Odonata of India<\/a>, d’un N. pygmaea ou Northern pygmyfly pris en Assam (Inde de l’est), qui n’a absolument rien \u00e0 voir avec l’esp\u00e8ce en question !

Les femelles deviennent nettement plus sombres et magnifiques en maturant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9tymologie<\/strong><\/span>
Nannophya<\/strong> (4) du grec \u03bd\u1fb6\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/em> ou \u03bd\u03ac\u03bd\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2<\/em> qui signifie nain et de \u03c6\u03c5\u03ae<\/em> pour stature<\/em>. Rambur (1), qui cr\u00e9e ce genre justement pour N. pygmaea, \u00e9crit : \u00ab\u00a0J’ai form\u00e9 ce genre sur la plus petite esp\u00e8ce de Libellulide connue et dont je n’ai vu que la femelle<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0.
Pygmaea<\/strong>, du grec pygmaios<\/em> – long comme un poing<\/em>, nabot<\/em>, puis du\u00a0latin<\/em>\u00a0pygmaeus<\/em> – pygm\u00e9e<\/em>. Rambur a donc choisi d’insister pour le nom de genre et le nom d’esp\u00e8ce sur la taille minuscule de l’insecte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
