Les cas de pr\u00e9dation par Anax imperator sur des zygopt\u00e8res ou des anisopt\u00e8res sont r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement rapport\u00e9s. J’avais observ\u00e9, il y a quelques ann\u00e9es, un Anax imperator m\u00e2le ayant captur\u00e9 un Orthetrum albistylum, mais celui-ci \u00e9tait parvenu \u00e0 s’\u00e9chapper. Ce ne sera pas le cas pour cette femelle Cordulia aenea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ce 20 mai 2025, en tout d\u00e9but d’apr\u00e8s-midi, il fait tr\u00e8s beau avec un peu de vent et je prospecte dans une partie o\u00f9 les brandes sont basses et peu abondantes dans la R\u00e9serve Naturelle du Pinail (F-86). Il est 14 h 24 et je suis survol\u00e9, assez bruyamment, par un gros odonates, que je n’identifie pas instantan\u00e9ment, mais je suppose que c’est un accouplement en vol. Je le suis des yeux et coup de chance, il se pose \u00e0 une quinzaine de m\u00e8tres de moi, dans les ajoncs. Les yeux fix\u00e9s sur son emplacement, je me h\u00e2te vers lui, traversant les ajoncs et les d\u00e9pressions en ligne droite ; ceux qui connaissent le Pinail savent ce que cela signifie !
Et je d\u00e9couvre que loin de s’accoupler, l’un des odonates sert de repas \u00e0 l’autre ; une femelle Anax imperator d\u00e9bute tout juste son repas d’une femelle Cordulia aenea<\/a>.

Anax imperator fait partie des plus grands odonates d’Europe et mesure 66 \u00e0 84 mm alors que Cordulia aenea n’atteint que 47 \u00e0 55 mm.
Je ne sais pas si la capture a eu lieu pos\u00e9 ou plus vraisemblablement en vol ; le doute est permis, car on voit un chapelet d’\u0153ufs<\/a> pendre de la victime. \u00c9tait-elle en ponte, ou est-ce simplement le stress qui d\u00e9clenche cette ponte r\u00e9flexe qui survient aussi, lorsque, nous, humains, capturons certaines femelles ?
Comme dans la plupart des cas, la pr\u00e9dation commence par les yeux, c’est-\u00e0-dire la t\u00eate, sans doute pour d\u00e9truire les centre nerveux principaux qui pourraient encore d\u00e9clencher des m\u00e9canismes de d\u00e9fense et de fuite. Noter qu’une minute apr\u00e8s le d\u00e9but de la pr\u00e9dation, la t\u00eate a d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9vor\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le repas se poursuit par le thorax, et la pr\u00e9datrice est vraiment tr\u00e8s occup\u00e9e, ce qui me permet de m’approcher de plus en plus…
Sur la photo de droite, on peut observer une des pi\u00e8ces bucales, un palpe maxillaire noir dot\u00e9 de 2 griffes terminales, juste en avant du labrum (qu’on peut assimiler \u00e0 la l\u00e8vre sup\u00e9rieure). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les dimension de la bouche est spectaculaire ; je m’\u00e9tais d\u00e9j\u00e0 fait la r\u00e9flexion en observant un Cordulegaster bidentata<\/a> d\u00e9vorer un hym\u00e9nopt\u00e8re, il y des ann\u00e9es, en Ard\u00e8che.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9videmment, mon insistance a eu raison de la patience de l’Imp\u00e9ratrice, qui a pris le large. Je l’ai suivie, retrouv\u00e9e, fait la photo ci-dessous, mais elle a presque aussit\u00f4t red\u00e9coll\u00e9 avec sa proie et je l’ai perdu de vue.
Il faut noter que c’est la premi\u00e8re Cordulia aenea que je voyais sur le site, alors que j’avais prospect\u00e9 toute la matin\u00e9e ; j’en verrai quelques-unes plus tard, mais \u00e0 une bonne distance de cette partie de la r\u00e9serve. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sur le forum Odonates du Monde des Insectes<\/em>, il existe rubrique Pr\u00e9dation entre Odonates<\/a> dans laquelle on trouve plusieurs cas de pr\u00e9dation par Anax imperator sur :
– Gomphus pulchellus<\/a>
– Sympetrum sanguineum<\/a>
– Diplacodes lefebrvii<\/a>
– Libellula fulva<\/a>
– Crocothemis erythraea<\/a>
– Orthetrum cancellatum<\/a>

Sur iNaturalist, en filtrant les Anax imperator dans les donn\u00e9es du projet Odonata – predation (eating)<\/em> on a acc\u00e8s \u00e0 ces quelques donn\u00e9es<\/a> (les proies ne sont pas toujours identifi\u00e9es).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
