In the Sama Jaya reserve, in the city of Kuching, I moved away from the group to find some peace and quiet&#8230; and having a few dozen seconds to scan the darkness in front of me, I was surprised to discover this superb male.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meslibellules.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gynacantha-dohrni-male-2.webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1954\" height=\"1504\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.meslibellules.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gynacantha-dohrni-male-2.webp\" alt=\"Gynacantha maclachlani male, Malaysia \u2013 Sarawak, Sama Jaya Nature Reserve, 03\/18\/2025\" class=\"wp-image-25058 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1954px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1954\/1504;width:497px;height:auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.meslibellules.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gynacantha-dohrni-male-2.webp 1954w, https:\/\/www.meslibellules.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gynacantha-dohrni-male-2-768x591.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.meslibellules.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gynacantha-dohrni-male-2-1536x1182.webp 1536w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1954px) 100vw, 1954px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Gynacantha maclachlani male, Malaysia \u2013 Sarawak, Sama Jaya Nature Reserve, 03\/18\/2025<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We are in a swampy part of fairly dense forest, and it is very dark, we are preparing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.meslibellules.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/18-03-2025-Gloriette-Sama-Jaya-Nature-Reserve-Kuching.webp\">to shelter<\/a>&nbsp;from the scattered rain which will turn into downpours and flood the meadows.<br><br>It is part of what English speakers call Duskhawker, that is to say that they are mainly active at dusk and, during the day, they hang quite low, clinging to a branch in dense forest.<br><br>Its size must be very close to that of G. dohrni, 62 to 66 mm (2) with an abdomen of 43 to 45 mm and especially very long upper anal appendages, 6.5 mm specifies Kr\u00fcger in his description (1).<br>It is only found in Borneo and Sumatra.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/species\/163745\/5645039\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IUCN Red List<\/a><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meslibellules.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gynacantha-dohrni-male-3.webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1639\" height=\"1504\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.meslibellules.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gynacantha-dohrni-male-3.webp\" alt=\"Gynacantha maclachlani male, Malaysia \u2013 Sarawak, Sama Jaya Nature Reserve, 03\/18\/2025\" class=\"wp-image-25060 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1639px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1639\/1504;width:474px;height:auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.meslibellules.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gynacantha-dohrni-male-3.webp 1639w, https:\/\/www.meslibellules.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gynacantha-dohrni-male-3-768x705.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.meslibellules.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gynacantha-dohrni-male-3-1536x1409.webp 1536w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1639px) 100vw, 1639px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Gynacantha maclachlani male, Malaysia \u2013 Sarawak, Sama Jaya Nature Reserve, 03\/18\/2025<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Note&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/meslibellules.fr\/pagesweb\/divers\/glossaire.php\">the blue auricles<\/a>&nbsp;on the second segment, and the way the third is constricted&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I must admit that this specimen was first identified as Gynacantha dohrni, of which there are many photos on the web. These are the first published of Gynacantha maclachlani, at least on iNaturalist.<br>The distinction is made mainly by the upper anal appendages, those of G. dohrni bearing a tooth at their base, which is absent here.
